Yes, People Collect Aprons

Vintage aprons like grandma used to wear.... It seems a rather humble item to collect, when other people search for rare artifacts or expensive antiques. ApronsĀ  combines nostalgia and ease of collecting to make it a growing collectible. My mother and sister hunt for them at yard sales.

The photo shows my mom, Gail Lee Martin, with her apron display. She's about to give her talk to a homemaker's club about collecting vintage aprons.

Gail Martin Giving Her Talk on the History of Aprons

Tips for an Apron Talk

How to Give a Talk on Aprons and their History
Gail has given talks on the history of aprons and it's very popular at senior centers, homemaker's clubs and nursing homes. Here's how to present a program on this topic. The format could be used for other nostalgia and historic talks.

Gail Lee Martin's book

Gail Martin's Book: My Flint Hills Childhood

A childhood on the Kansas prairies in the 1930s springs vividly to life in the detailed memories of Gail Martin. Her simple accounts of long ago school days, celebrations and family life are a treasure. Travel back in time to life in the Flint Hills during the Great Depression and the time leading up to World War II.
The memories include her father's work in the oil field, trips to town in the family's Model A, raising her pet badger, fishing on the Cottonwood River, and wearing dresses made from feed sack material.
The book also explores her family's role in early Kansas history with details of covered wagons, homesteading, the Civil War and fledgling industries. These range from Tyro to Teterville to Eureka.

The book includes her award-winning essay, My Mother's Apron.

What a cute idea. I think I'd love to have a vintage apron. And, please give your Mom a huge hug for me when next you see her. She's totally adorable.

I love vintage aprons, especially the bib aprons with the great pockets. Hunting for original patterns on Ebay is a fun pastime too. Enjoyable lens!

I enjoyed reading your lens about vintage aprons. (Loved your intro photo). I don't collect them, but love all sorts of vintage textiles (handkerchiefs, tablecloths, and more). The lens caught my eye because I read an article today in my local paper about an apron museum in a nearby small town. I plan to check it out soon.
