How to Report Collection Agency Harassment
Ranked #777 in Education, #18,418 overall
Stand Up to Abusive Collection Agencies
Collection agency harassment runs rampant. The FTC reported that in 2005 that over 66,000 incidents of collection agency abuse were filed in their 2006 report to congress. [pdf]
Collection agencies must abide by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act which was enacted in 1977 to prevent collection agency abuse. Many forms of intimidation by a collection agency are considered harassment and you do not have to stand for it.
While the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act does provide consumers with the ability to sue a collection agency it is beyond the scope of this article. If you take the time to report collection agency harassment it may prevent another consumer from experiencing what happened to you and may even cause the FTC to step in and take action against them.

- I used to think that all honest work was honorable work, but collection agencies have some of the worst scum working for them. These people have no honor and treat everyone like trash. This is a great site and I wish I had found it years earlier when we had a bit of financial trouble due to job loss. Thanks for the lens.

- Collection agencies get a bad wrap for a lot of good reasons. Threats are a bad way to do business for sure....but when someone owes money, they should be responsible for paying that back...Don't forget that not all debt collection agenciesare bad

- Financial Recovery Services is yet another name for the bogus collection agencies in the Buffalo, NY area. The names change; currently, we're hearing from a "Michael Kilpatrick". In the last year, we have received too many calls to count about a non-existent "debt". On the first call today, he said the call was being "federally recorded"; He, and all the others, are beyond abusive in tone and language. He said it was for "Orchard Bank" (bogus) through HSBC. We do have an account with HSBC, but are working with them directly. They say they have no affiliation with any collection agencies. He gave us "a docket #". First he said, "It was filed"; then it will be filed; then said we could find out from the law office.
In ensuing calls today, we've asked for the law firm and why he's calling for them; who to speak with; their phone #, etc. There is a "Mark Lewis" law firm, also in Buffalo. They have a lovely website and nothing is listed indicating they do debt collection. Also, as he is licensed only in New York, how can they file in other states?.
Another tip-off was that "Mr. Kilpatrick" claimed that he has records of all of our W-2'S. That is an absolute lie, because we both have been on SSA Disability for years.
Since the first call, we've spoken to him 4 more times (we called him). In each, he changed the story and information. Then (OMG! ROTFLOAO!!) he threatened to have my husband arrested for harassment, because two calls equal harassment!
Unbelievable! Isn't there a legal way to stop these people? The Buffalo area is renowned for this.
What about a class-action suit?
