San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl

2007 Poinsettia Bowl Preview: Navy vs. Utah

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has the honor of being the first NCAA college football bowl game of the 2007-2008 season.

The Poinsettia Bowl will be played December 20th, at San Diego, and features two good teams in the Utah vs. Navy match up.

Utah (8-4) has had a solid season highlighted by an excellent defense that is 15th in the country against the pass. Utah is equally solid against the run, and has more athletes on that side of the ball than usual. There are few teams in the nation that can play this defense well from behind, and the Utes relish playing a close game or playing from ahead.

They have solid wins against Louisville, TCU, and a very impressive 50-0 shut out win over Wyoming. In addition, they took ranked BYU all the way down to the wire.

They look to face an 8-4 Navy team whose accomplishments include breaking the 43 year losing streak to Notre Dame, and their explosive offense is ranked #1 in the country in rushing yards and #8 in scoring. This is the most efficient triple option opponents have seen in years, and they can pile up points on almost anyone.

The Prediction: The problem here is Navy's schedule is beyond powder puff, they had to go to OT to beat a terrible Notre Dame team, they even lost to I-AA Delaware, who put up 50 on Navy's D. In addition, they have one quality win over Air Force, but lost to every other quality team they faced (Rutgers, Wake Forest, Ball State). This team can't play from behind, and even though they score, they can't seem to play a shoot out comfortably.

Utah has a solid spread offense to go with their defense, and although their defense is designed more for the pass than the run, I can't see them putting up less than 40 against a bad Navy defense, and Utah has enough athletes to pull out the win. Utah will win a shoot out, pulling away in the 4th quarter, because Navy will not be able to pass to keep up.

UpdateHead Coach Paul Johnson will not coach this game, as he has accepted a new head coaching job. I don't anticipate this will change anything, as the triple option is a system that doesn't require a great amount of coaching once the players know it through and through--and I have Navy losing anyway, so this would not make them more likely to win.

Players to Watch: QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhadu of Navy & RB Darrell Mack of Utah
Point Spread: Utah (-8 1/2)
America's Prediction: Utah 61% favorite

THE RESULT: Navy made it exciting in the end, but Utah won 35-32. Predictions: 1-0, 100%

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

2007 New Orleans Bowl Preview: Florida Atlantic vs. Memphis

The 2007 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will be the second NCAA bowl game of the year and will be played on December 21st in New Orleans, Louisiana.

This game will face off 8-4 Memphis from Conference USA vs. Sun Belt Champion Florida Atlantic (7-5). On paper, this could be a pretty evenly matched game.

The Memphis Tigers are 50th in scoring offense, averaging 29.4 pts a game. The Florida Atlantic Owls are 49th with 30.2 points a game. Both teams have balanced offenses that like to throw for about 300 yards a game, but also run for over 120 yards a game. Florida Atlantic plays a little more spread.

On paper the defenses look equally mediocre. Florida Atlantic gives up 4.8 yards a carry on average, while Memphis gives up 5.2. Memphis gives up 229.8 passing yards a game while Florida Atlantic gives up 237.6. It's going to be a shoot out.

The Prediction: On paper it looks even, but if you're a gambler and the point spread comes out for Memphis, this is your game!

Common sense says Memphis in C-USA while Florida Atlantic is Sun Belt, so when all is even you go C-USA, right? No! Memphis's five toughest opponents: UCF, East Carolina, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, & take your pick between Middle Tennessee State or Arkansas State (both unimpressive Sun Belt teams at 5-7)

Now compare that to Florida Atlantic's 5 toughest opponents: Florida, Kentucky, South Florida, Oklahoma State, Troy State.

See where I'm getting at? If those two teams' numbers are even, then it's safe to assume that the much harder schedule makes Florida Atlantic a better team, and they did beat Troy State, who is no push over and should have been picked for an at large bowl.

This time the Sun Belt wins. Pick Florida Atlantic to win the 2007 New Orleans Bowl.

Players to Watch: WR Carlos Singleton of Memphis & QB Rusty Smith of Florida Atlantic
Point Spread: Florida Atlantic (-3)
America's Prediction: Memphis 51% favorite

THE RESULT: Did I call this one, or what? Florida Atlantic won easily, defeating Memphis 44-27. Predictions: 2-0, 100%

Papajohns.com Bowl

2007 Papajohns.com Bowl Preview: Southern Mississippi vs. Cincinnati

The 2007 Papajohns.com Bowl kicks off a trio of bowls that are played on December 22nd. The Papajohns.com Bowl will be played in Birmingham, Alabama, and faces Conference USA contender the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (7-5) against a ranked #23 Cincinnati Bearcat (9-3) team.

Southern Miss comes in with a disadvantage as they come in without their head coach, who was the most surprising and inexplicable firing of any coach this off season. Cincinnati had at one point hopes of becoming a national title dark horse, but the Big East devoured itself, and it wasn't to be.

Southern Miss is generally a strong team, but they are simply outmatched here. Cincinnati has a very aggressive defense that focuses on turnovers, and the spread offense is 14th in the country in scoring. They can pass and run, and Alabama may sound like a home game for the Golden Eagles, but Ohio isn't that far away.

The Prediction: Cincinnati in a solid victory without too many worries. They have too fierce a defense, and could put up 38 without forcing any turnovers--and they will likely force one or two, giving Coach Brian Kelly a bowl win in his first season with the team.

Point Spread: Cincinnati (-11)
America's Prediction: Cincinnatti 80%

THE RESULTS: Despite playing a really sloppy, terrible game, Cincinnati won 31-21. Predictions: 3-0, 100%

New Mexico Bowl

2007 New Mexico Bowl Preview: Nevada vs. New Mexico

The 2007 New Mexico Bowl will also be played on December 22nd, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This bowl will pit the 6-6 Nevada Wolf Pack against the home town favorites, the 8-4 New Mexico Lobos.

Despite the difference in records, this one could be close. 5 of 6 losses by Nevada were to bowl teams, and they could hang up the points-QB Kaepernick put up 67 on Boise State.

New Mexico definitely has home field advantage going for it. Neither team has an impressive defense. but Nevada seems to have played a tougher schedule, and they average 36.3 pts a game versus New Mexico's 24.8.

If this becomes a shoot out, the advantage goes to Nevada, who prefers that type of a game. If New Mexico can slow them down, the home advantage might give them a chance.

The Prediction: Nevada will start slow, but without a lot of defense, New Mexico's inefficient offense will be too little against Nevada's spread game. It stays close early, but by the 4th quarter Nevada pulls away and wins the game with their strong balanced offense.

UpdateWhile I liked Nevada for the upset to begin with, both of New Mexico's top RB were ruled ineligible for the bowl, making this pick look even better than before!

Point Spread: New Mexico (-3)
America's Predicton: Tie--50% each

THE RESULTS: Well when you're on, you're on, and when you're not you choose the team that gets shut out. I should have gone with the favorites. New Mexico wins 23-0. Predictions: 3-1, 75%

Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl

2007 Las Vegas Bowl Preview: UCLA vs. BYU

The 2007 Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl is the third and final bowl that will be played on December 22nd. The Las Vegas Bowl will feature the Pac-10's UCLA Bruins (6-6) against the Mountain West champions, BYU (10-2). This will be the second year in a row that BYU took on a traditional Pac-10 power (they killed Oregon last year).

BYU has been a strong team for about as long as anyone can remember, going all the way back to the days of Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and Ty Detmer. Max Hall is proving himself more than worthy of stepping in line with those great quarterbacks, and he has help with Max Unga, an extremely talented running back.

UCLA is coming off a disappointing 6-6 season. With so many players returning from a young team, more was expected out of this program than maybe what was realistic, and Coach Karl Dorrell despite two straight .500 seasons was shown the door.

The Prediction: Dorrell was a popular coach, and the decision to fire him did not go over well with many members of the team. Also, BYU is a perennial powerhouse, and even with the whole team in full focus, UCLA would be hard pressed to stop them, or even slow them down.

BYU smashed an Oregon team last season who was much better designed to take out BYU. UCLA doesn't have a chance. BYU wins big.

Point Spread: BYU (-6)
America's Prediction: BYU 69%

THE RESULTS: It was a really close one, but BYU holds on for a surprisingly close 17-16 victory. Predictions: 4-1, 80%

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

2007 Hawaii Bowl Preview: East Carolina vs. Boise State

Usually a home game for home favorites Hawaii, the 2007 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl will be played on December 23rd in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will face off WAC opponent Boise State (10-2) against Conference USA's East Carolina (7-5).

The luckiest college football fans in the country are the fans of East Carolina who can make it. A week in Hawaii during the winter facing a team who is usually Hawaii's opponent-meaning they're going to cheer for you. The game won't end well for them, but as far as bowl experiences go, really, how outstanding is that?

Boise State's only two losses came in close games to Washington and Hawaii. Many people think this is a down year for Boise State, but 10 wins is nothing to snuff at. Ian Johnson is still one of the best running backs in the country, and has over 1,200 yards rushing at 5.1 yards a carry and 16 TD despite missing two games to injury. Not too shabby.

This is a talented team that is not going to see a let down because they didn't make the BCS. They're going to come to play, and they're going to be more familiar with Hawaii's field and playing conditions than East Carolina is.

Boise State is 5th in the nation in scoring offense, and contrary to popular belief, it's not all rushing. Boise State is 5th in the nation in scoring, 30th in rushing, and 22nd in passing. Yeah, they're that good.

Does East Carolina have a chance? They're no slouches, as the seven wins indicate, but Conference USA isn't exactly earth shattering competition. In addition to having to face one of the best offenses in the country, ECU is in the lower quarter of the nation in total defense and rush defense. Not good.

The Prediction: ECU will have a drive or two that shows what they can do, but Boise State is going to absolutely dominate, and they will win by more than three touchdowns, and they won't have to break out the hook and ladder or statue of liberty plays to do it...though it would be cool to see, you know, for old time's sake :) At least the Carolina kids will have been able to see Honolulu, right?

UpdateBoise State's top WR has been ruled ineligable for the bowl game, which is a definite blow to Boise State. Might make the point spread scary, but they should still have enough talent to win.

Point Spread: Boise State (+10 1/2)
America's Prediction: Boise State 74%

THE RESULTS:In one of the big shockers of the year, East Carolina played a far superior game and won a thrilling 41-38 game over the heavily favored Broncos. Predictions: 4-2, 67%

Motor City Bowl

2007 Motor City Bowl Preview: Purdue vs. Central Michigan

The 2007 Motor City Bowl gives the families full of college football fans something to watch the day after Christmas. The Motor City Bowl is held on December 26th in Detroit, Michigan, and matches the Purdue Boilermakers against the MAC Champion Central Michigan Chippewas.

This bowl is a rematch, as these teams played one another early in the season, with Purdue coming out on top 45-22, but there might be more to this match up than first appears on paper.

Purdue ended the season losing 3 of its last 4 games, 2 of the 3 close heartbreakers. Meanwhile, Central Michigan started the year badly, and finished strong, winning the MAC championship and all but one game of the last five, behind dual threat quarterback Dan LeFevour they made it to an 8-5 record.

The Prediction: Although the win loss record suggests that Central Michigan has been playing better recently, there is a huge talent gap.

Clemson hung 70 points on Central Mich in an embarassing loss and Purdue was playing quality opponents and barely losing, falling to Penn State, Michigan State, and Indiana (all bowl teams) and Penn State and Michigan State only beat them by a combined 8 pts.

In the first half of the MAC championship the Chippewas only put up 7 points before getting going in the second. They do that to Purdue and they'll be down 28-0 just like that. Purdue wins this game, and wins it handily to end on a high note.

Point Spread: (-8 1/2)
America's Prediction: Purude 70%

THE RESULTS: Well Central Michigan did go down badly early, and then Purdue almost pulled one of the biggest choke jobs of the year. Thanks to a last second 40 yard field goal they won, but eeking out a 51-48 victory over a MAC team really wasn't what Joe Tiller was hoping for, but hey, a win is a win. Predictions: 5-2, 71%

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl

2007 Holiday Bowl Preview: Arizona State vs. Texas

The 2007 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl will be played in San Diego, California, on December 27th, and should be a great game between the #11 Arizona State Sun Devils and the #19 Texas Longhorns.

These are two powerhouse teams from two of the better conferences in all of college football. Expert sports handicappers are expecting it to be an excellent game as well-as can be deduced from the measly 1 ½ pt point spread.

This will be a match of quarterbacks on offense as Rudy Carpenter and Colt McCoy are two excellent signal callers who both look to have an NFL future. Both teams are coached by exceptional head coaches in Dennis Erickson and Mac Brown. Both teams have pretty good defenses, too.

This game has the potential to be the best bowl game of the entire year.

The Prediction: Wow. This one I honestly believe is a toss up. Both teams played difficult schedules loaded with bowl teams and ranked teams. Although I think overall the Big 12 is stronger than the Pac 10, Arizona State played better under pressure, and losing to USC when USC is in full gear is definitely better than losing to Texas A&M, a fringe bowl team, with a BCS bowl bid on the line.

I'm taking Arizona State in a close game that should come down to the wire!

Point Spread: Texas (-1 1/2)
America's Prediction: Texas 60%

THE RESULTS: Well this is what I get for shucking my home conference (the Big 12) for the trendy upset. Texas actually looked like the Texas of old, and even with an amazing amount of fumbles, Texas dominated this shoot out to the tune of 52-34, putting the Pac-10 at 0-2. Predictions: 5-3, 62.5%

Champs Sports Bowl

2007 Champs Sports Bowl Preview: Boston College vs. Michigan State

The 2007 Champs Sports Bowl will be played December 28th in Orlando, Florida, and will feature the 10-2 Boston College Eagles, ranked #14, against the 7-5 Michigan State Spartans. QB Matt Ryan was a Heisman hopeful, who has played very well over this season and is almost a lock as a first round pick in the NFL draft.

Michigan State, meanwhile, has used a two back running game to score nearly 30 TD on the ground this year. The interesting aspect of this is that Boston College's defense is rated as one of the three top run stuffing defenses in the entire country, meaning this game will be strength against strength.

The Prediction: This should be a good game as it faces off two very talented teams. Michigan's run offense versus Boston College's run defense will be a case of strength against strength, and should be fun to watch. The edge has to go to Boston College because Ryan and that offense are simply too much for Michigan State's defense to match up with.

Michigan State's best chance of winning is to run so effectively that Ryan stays off the field, but that's a tall order against BC's Defense. I have to go with Boston College winning a very exciting game.

Point Spread: Boston College (-3 1/2)
America's Prediction: Boston College 61%

THE RESULTS: I have to give props to Michigan State, they played extremely tough, and even with 5 turnovers, they still almost held on to pull the upset. Boston College won a squeaker 24-21. Predictions: 6-3, 67%

Texas Bowl

2007 Texas Bowl Preview: TCU vs. Houston

The 2007 Texas Bowl will be played on December 28th in Houston, Texas. This game will feature a quality TCU team against the home city favorite of Houston. Houston runs one of the best spread offenses in the land, and is well balanced, with almost 200 yards a game rushing.

TCU finished 7-5, beating up on weaker opponents, but often falling just short against better teams. This team is stout against the run, but just isn't quite the strong TCU defense of the past.

The offense isn't much help, as 24 pts a game is hardly a juggernaut. This hits you as a team that is good on both sides, but not great. They haven't beat anyone to earn that respect yet.

Houston (8-4) can have encouragement because they average 10 points a game more on offense than TCU does. This is another team that hasn't notched a major win this season, and going against them is that they give up about 10 pts more a game than TCU does, as well.

The Prediction: TCU has played its tougher opponents closer than Houston has. While Houston's offense scares me since TCU's defense isn't as shut down as it used to be, TCU did play a harder schedule, and played some good teams close. In this case I think when in doubt, you still go defense, and so I go TCU in a very close game.

Point Spread: TCU (-4)
America's Prediction: TCU 65%

THE RESULTS: This was a tight game, and you wonder if things would have turned out differently if Houston's head coach was there. I said it would be a close game with TCU coming out on top, and that's what happened. TCU won, 20-13. Predictions: 7-3, 70%

Emerald Bowl

2007 Emerald Bowl Preview: Maryland vs. Oregon State

The Emerald Bowl has managed to have some really nice teams fall their way, and the 2007 Emerald Bowl is no exception. Played on December 28th in San Francisco, California, the Emerald Bowl will feature the Maryland Terrapins against the Oregon State Beavers.

Maryland just snuck into bowl eligibility with a last week victory over North Carolina State to snag the #8 ACC bowl tie in. This was a rough season for this team, and there is some discontent over the job current head coach is doing, though to his credit he did have some impressive wins, including the upset of Boston College.

Oregon State has had an excellent season, finishing 8-4 and notching quality wins over Utah, Cal, and arch rival Oregon. They are one of the hardest teams in the nation to run against, which could prove very problematic for Maryland.

Prediction: Maryland relies on a heavy power running game that has been exceptional in short yardage, but really weak in yards per carry. This is going against one of the best run defenses in all of college football.

Even if Oregon State can't light it up, Maryland is going to have a hard time scoring at all. Oregon State should win, and may even win big.

Point Spread: Oregon State (-4 1/2)
America's Prediction: Oregon State 51%

THE RESULTS: Well Maryland played better than I expected and the Beavers had some early injuries, but they were the better team and they gave the PAC-10 their first win of this bowl season. OSU wins, 21-14. Predictions: 8-3, 73%

Meineke Car Care Bowl

2007 Meineke Car Care Bowl Preview: UConn vs. Wake Forest

The 2007 Meineke Car Care Bowl will be played on December 29th in Charlotte, South Carolina and pits Big East surprise UConn (9-3) against ACC favorite Wake Forest (8-4).

UConn has had an amazing season behind a very solid running game and the arm of transfer QB Tyler Lorenzen. Wake Forest continues its impressive turn around in the ACC, and was once again a very solid team.

The surprise here is that UConn's defense is exceptional, allowing less than 20 points a game this season. West Virginia hammered them for 60, but that's the exception of what this season has been. UConn knows how to fight a close game or open up the spread.

Prediction: This one is a toss up because I can't get a great pulse on either team. Both seem to be good, not great, and although UConn was embarrassed against West Virginia, generally they fought and scrapped with the best of them. This can also be said of Wake Forest, but in the end I have to give the edge Wake Forest in an ugly game.

Point Spread: Wake Forest (-3)
America's Prediction: Tie--50% each

THE RESULTS: It was ugly, it was defensive, but despite getting down early Wake Forest proved that experience matters. Wake won 24-10. Predictions: 9-3, 75%

AutoZone Liberty Bowl

2007 Liberty Bowl Preview: UCF vs. Mississippi State

The 2007 AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be played December 29th in Memphis, Tennessee, and faces a dangerous UCF team against Sylvester Croom's Mississippi State.

UCF has one of the most exciting players in the entire country in RB Kevin Smith, who is in range of breaking Barry Sanders' single season rushing record for yards. This is a team that can pile on the points rushing and passing, and they almost upset Texas early in the season.

Even though it's their first bowl game in many years, Mississippi State is no pushover. Sylvester Croom has built one heck of a team here that has already upset Auburn, Alabama, and Kentucky and is led by a vicious defense, one that is especially strong against the run. UCF isn't your common C-USA team-they can hang with the big boys. So is the SEC defense enough?

My Prediction: Well UCF is favored by 3, and this game is tough to call. A shoot out almost certainly goes to UCF, but can their defense handle a big SEC offensive line? Can they run out of the spread against one of the best rush defenses in the country? It wouldn't surprise me if Miss State won this game, but they have too few offensive playmakers, so I'm going with UCF in a nail biter.

Point Spread: UCF (-3)
America's Prediction: UCF 63%

THE RESULTS: Basic lesson I know and shouldn't have ignored: if you don't know much about either team, choose the SEC. I was right in wondering where Mississippi State's points would come from, but it turns out it didn't matter. Congrats to Sylvester Croom and M-State, who won 10-3. Predictions: 9-4, 69%

Valero Alamo Bowl

2007 Alamo Bowl Preview: Penn State vs. Texas A&M

The Alamo Bowl is held December 29th in San Antonio, Texas, and has produced some good games in the past. The 2007 Alamo Bowl should be no different as Penn State takes on Texas A&M, who is fresh off an upset victory over rival Texas. The Big 10 faces the Big 12 once again.

JoPa can't have that many more seasons left to coach, and this is going to be a good chance to notch another win in an epic career. Penn State was a solid athletic team this season, but without that little extra oomph on offense or defense that could make them frightening as an elite team.

Texas A&M is coming off a major upset over Texas, but all in all they tend to be an overrated team that isn't nearly as good as perception indicates. They do have a very athletic and talented quarterback in Stephen McGee.

Penn State was expected to be elite, but they were pretty average in a Big 10 that looked really pedestrian this year. Texas A&M is at the bottom of the Big 12, and won't offer a lot in competition as long as Penn State's defense can contain McGee.

My Prediction: This is one of the few games the Big Ten will win this bowl season. McGee will have a good game, but in the end Penn State will edge out Texas A&M.

Point Spread: Penn State (-5 1/2)
America's Prediction: Penn State 72%

THE RESULTS: Penn State put up a great game for JoPa and showed A&M as the mediocre team that they are. Penn State won, 24-17. Predictions: 10-4, 71%

PetroSun Independence Bowl

2007 Independence Bowl Preview: Alabama vs. Colorado

The 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl will be played on December 30th in Shreveport, Louisiana. SEC at large Alabama Crimson Tide team faces of against the Big 12's Colorado Buffalos.

This also faces two of the most schizophrenic teams playing in bowls this season. Alabama has barely beat some really questionable teams (Ole Miss, down trodden Houston) but also beat ranked Tennessee by over 30 points. They've been very good one week, and terrible the next.

Colorado upsets Oklahoma one week, then blows a 21 point lead over 3-8 Iowa State. So which version of each team is going to show up? This is a strange match up since Alabama is definitely run oriented versus the spread offense by Colorado.

For most of the season Colorado's strong defense was a pleasant surprise, but that evaporated in the last two games, as they surrendered a whopping 82 points in their last two games. They forgot that it wasn't intramurals, it was Big 12 football, dang it!

My Prediction: Even if Colorado's "good" team shows up, Alabama has played more quality opponents, and the complete unraveling of Colorado's defense can't be ignored. Colorado had a good season and is back on the rise, but even with this Alabama team not being anything particularly special, they're the better team. Alabama wins.

Point Spread: Alabama (-3 1/2)
America's Prediction: Alabama 65%

THE RESULTS: Alabama was the better team, but they almost coughed it up. Colorado at least made it respectable by the end, but Alabama won, 30-24 in a game that appears far closer than it ever really was. Predictions: 11-4, 73%

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl

2007 Armed Forces Bowl Preview: California vs. Air Force

The 2007 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl will be played on December 31st and face off a solid Air Force team against a Cal team that has fallen hard.

Air Force has defeated some pretty good foes in Utah and TCU. Cal started strong, even getting ranked as high as #2--and then proceeded to lose 6 of their last 7, even dropping one to lowly Stanford. What the heck is going on here?

Air Force is a well disciplined team (as would be expected), and has played some tough games against Mountain West opponents, but in theory they shouldn't be the same caliber as Cal. But what's happened to Cal? They went from one of the best teams in the nation to being incompetent seemingly overnight. Talent wise they should be a top 15 team, but after that unbelievable tailspin, what can we expect from Cal?

The Prediction: There are weeks off, Coach Jeff Tedford get this team turned around. This was a disappointing and embarrassing season, and they will end with what bright spot they can. Expect Cal to win, and to try to beat Air Force as heavy as they can.

Update: You know, the more I study this one, the more I'm getting nervous. At this point I would actually consider retracting my Cal prediction and call this one a true toss up, but I'll hold fast.

Point Spread: Cal (-4)
America's Prediction: Cal 52%

THE RESULTS: If Air Force's QB doesn't have that grusome injury this is a completely different game, but in the end Cal did come back to win and all that history remembers is the final score. Cal won 42-36. Predictions: 12-4, 75%

Roady's Humanitarian Bowl

2007 Humanitarian Bowl Preview: Georgia Tech vs. Fresno State

Roady's Humanitarian Bowl hasn't seen its home team in a few years-a great sign of how well they're doing. The 2007 Roady's Humanitarian Bowl will be played on December 31st in Boise, Idaho, and will face of the ACC's Georgia Tech against the WAC's Fresno State.

Fresno State is a four point underdog in this one, which shows not only how good a season Fresno State has had, but also how streaky Georgia Tech has been. Georgia Tech has a fantastic running game, solid offensive line, and good defense, though Calvin Johnson's graduation has certainly shown in the passing game's difficulty in consistently beating opponents.

My Prediction: Georgia Tech should be able to run it consistently, but that is a team in complete disarray while Fresno State is talented. They take advantage to win in an upset. Pick Fresno State.

Point Spread: Georgia Tech (-4)
America's Prediction: Georgia Tech 54%

THE RESULTS: Fresno State came to play, and exploded early. Georgia Tech tried to fight back, but Fresno wanted it a lot more. Predictions: 13-4, 76.5%

Brut Sun Bowl

2007 Sun Bowl Preview: South Florida vs. Oregon

The 2007 Brut Sun Bowl will be played in El Paso, Texas, on December 31st and will pit the #21 South Florida Bulls vs. the Oregon Ducks.

A few weeks ago this would have been a premeire match up, but Dennis Dixon's injury throws Oregon's abilities all into question. They just have not been the same since Dixon went down, losing that game to Arizona, then dropping the last two, including being shut out by UCLA.

South Florida, despite a major stumble out of that seemingly cursed #2 spot, is still an extremely talented team with a great spread offense that can put up the points, and an aggressive play making defense with several future NFL stars. After losing several in a row, South Florida bounced back and finished the season strong.

The Prediction: This would have been an excellent game with Dennis Dixon. Without him, there's no way to bet Oregon. South Florida wins to cap off an amazing season.

Point Spread: South Florida (-6 1/2)
America's Prediction: USF 71%

THE RESULTS: Well the Pac-10 has taken advantage to put on a good showing, and hats off to Oregon--they played lights out. For a bowl season that has been relatively uneventful, Oregon stuns the world: 56-21. Predictions: 13-5, 72%

Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl

2007 Music City Bowl Preview: Kentucky vs. Florida State

The 2007 Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl will be played in Nashville, Tennessee on December 31st and it'll be offense against defense as the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Florida State Seminoles.

Kentucky has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Andre Woodson, and their high flying offense can put up points with the best of them.

Florida State, meanwhile, has had another (for them) dismal year, as a complete lack of quality quarterback play has once again resulted in a stagnant offense, but the defense is still strong like the trademark Florida State defenses of old. Even when the offense can't move, the defense usually keeps this team in the game to the very end.

Update:This prediction was done before the FSU widespread cheating. Once again, news seems to support me as I liked Kentucky to begin with. I don't care if all 20 some players are back ups: that will cost you. Kentucky looks very good now, even with a line that only moved to -3!

The Prediction: Usually when it's offense against defense I take defense, but this time I'm going Kentucky. The offense will be too much for the Seminoles to overcome.

Point Spread: Kentucky (-3)
America's Prediction: Kentucky 56%

THE RESULTS: Kentucky still won, but give some credit to Florida State. They had only a skeleton of a team, but only lost by a TD. Kentucky won a hard game 35-28. Predictions: 14-5, 74%

Insight Bowl

2007 Insight Bowl Preview: Indiana vs. Oklahoma State

The 2007 Insight Bowl, formerly known as the Insight.com Bowl, will be played on New Year's Eve (December 31st) in sunny Tempe, Arizona. This will be an excellent Big Ten vs. Big 12 match up between two strong offensive teams: the Indiana Hoosiers vs. the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Both teams have excellent spread offenses that can pile on the points. Indiana is playing in memory of deceased coach Terry Hoeppner, who passed away during the off-season due to brain cancer. They're having their best season in 14 years and would love to top it off with a bowl win.

Oklahoma State has shown they can put up the points on anyone. They have two RB's averaging 6 or more yards a carry, and QB Zac Robinson has been nothing short of phenomenal. They outscored Texas Tech in a shoot out, if that tells you anything, but their defense has been less than stellar.

The Prediction: Indiana wins in an exciting shoot out that sets the perfect tone for New Year's Eve. I just can't bet against the emotional underdog.

Point Spread: Oklahoma State (-4)
America's Prediction: Oklahoma State 64%

THE RESULTS: Emotion be darned, turns out the Big 12 is still that much better than the Big 10 right now. In a shoot out, Oklahoma State smoked Indiana, 49-33. Predictons: 14-6, 70%

Chick-fil-A Bowl

2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl Preview: Clemson vs. Auburn

The 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl is another excellent New Year's Eve Bowl. This one takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, where ACC power Clemson (9-3) takes on SEC Auburn (8-4). This could be one of the best bowl games of the year.

This could be a great game. Clemson has put together one heck of a team, and hasn't suffered the late season collapse that marred them the last couple years. They even hanged 70 points on Central Michigan, who was good enough to win the MAC. This isn't like the Clemson teams of recent years-this one knows how to close a game.

Auburn is no pushover. While the offense is not the unstoppable rushing giant of years past, the defense is SEC approved. Auburn allows less than 20 points a game, and will be the stiffest test Clemson faces all season. After all, Auburn did hold Florida's incredible offense to 17 points.

The Prediction: Although Auburn's defense will give them a run for their money, Clemson will win this game.

Point Spread: Clemson (-2 1/2)
America's Prediction: Clemson 64%

THE RESULTS: Repeat: I will not bet against the SEC next year, I will not bet against the SEC next year, I will not let people convince me the SEC is overrated next year...Auburn's defense was enough, and they win 26-23 in overtime. Predictions: 14-7, 67%

Outback Bowl

2007-2008 Outback Bowl Preview: Wisconsin vs. Tennessee

The 2008 Outback Bowl will be the first New Year's Bowl. This is familiar territory for Wisconsin, who has been to three other Outback Bowls, and this time the Badgers face the Tennessee Volunteers.

Wisconsin had a solid 9-3 year, though it felt like a let down, as after losing only two starters from last year's 12-1 squad, expectations for this year's team were high, but Wisconsin lost to Illinois, Ohio State, and Penn State, showing they're not in the Big Ten Elite. This is still a hard running team with a sturdy defense.

Tennessee lost a heartbreaking game to LSU in the SEC Championship. Tennessee has been a surprise, as quarterback Eric Ainge in his senior year has finally developed into a quarterback who can win, and the Volunteers defense has been unusually stout.

The Prediction: The SEC is a lot stronger than the Big Ten, though this match up is probably one of the best for Wisconsin out of the upper tier SEC teams. Still, Tennessee should be balanced enough that if they're focused, they'll win this game.

UpdateSeveral Tennessee players failed to make grades, leaving the Volunteers short handed by six players. This was a coin flip game to begin with, and even as I chose Tennessee I wondered--do I really want to bet on QB Erik Ainge to win? Those Big Ten fans are looking better on this one now, so Wisconsin may have a definite edge.

Point Spread: Tennessee (-3 1/2)
America's Prediction: Tennessee 61%

THE RESULTS: So to those incredibly rude e-mails, only a donkey's what would believe the Big Ten wasn't going 7-1? Okay, anger aside, the SEC has faster athletes and better spread offenses. Wisconsin played very well and kept it a game to the end, but the Volunteers win 21-17. Predictions: 15-7, 68%

AT&T Cotton Bowl

2007-2008 Cotton Bowl Preview: Missouri vs. Arkansas

The 2007 AT&T Cotton Bowl is another New Year's game played in Dallas, Texas, that faces off the 10-2 Missouri Tigers (who fell just one game short of playing in the national title game) against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

This should be an excellent game. Missouri feels slighted since they beat Kansas, who managed a BCS bid, and Missouri lost twice, but both times to the same team: Oklahoma-who never played Kansas. Chase Daniel is one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and Missouri can run a spread or pass happy two TE set and cause mismatches. The defense is excellent, and Gary Pinkel has finally put together a high quality team that is not underachieving.

Arkansas is no push over. Because of how toxic the situation was, Houston Nutt resigned before being signed within hours to Ole Miss. RB Darren McFadden is still there, and will challenge any defense. Arkansas is no pushover on defense, either, and this is a team that beat the #2 ranked LSU Tigers.

My Prediction: Houston Nutt got a raw deal, and the players like their now departed head coach. In addition, Missouri comes in feeling slighted and wanting to end on a high note. Missouri wins a good game.

Point Spread: Missouri (-3)
America's Prediction: Missouri 60%

THE RESULTS: Teams in coaching transitions don't win bowl games, especially when the players loved their departed head coach. Missouri took that slighted feeling out on Arkansas in a 38-7 spanking. Predictions: 16-7, 69.5%

2008 Gator Bowl

2007-2008 Gator Bowl Preview: Texas Tech vs. Virginia

The 2008 Gator Bowl will be played January 1st in Jacksonville, Florida. This could be a fun game that pits two completely different styles of teams: Texas Tech vs. Virginia.

Texas Tech is famous for its high flying, go for it on 4th down offense. Freshman WR Michael Crabtree has been phenomenal, shattering many NCAA single season records. As always, Tech can put up 30 points on anyone, and their defense has improved dramatically from a few years ago.

Virginia is the polar opposite. A very conservative team, Al Groh's Virginia football team is built around running, running, and running some more. They control the time of possession, and play solid defense. Will it work against a Texas Tech team that can run up points as well as any team in the country?

The Prediction: Virginia has the right game plan, and no one can take away from the exceptional season they had, but Texas Tech is going to simply overwhelm them, and they'll have no answer for WR Michael Crabtree.

Point Spread: Texas Tech (-6)
America's Prediction: Texas Tech 69%

THE RESULTS: This was an extremely close game, and it looked like Al Groh was in charge, but Mike Leach's 4th quarter comeback does it again. Tech wins 31-28. Predictions: 17-7, 71%

Capital One Bowl

2007-2008 Capital One Bowl Preview: Michigan vs. Florida

The 2008 Capital One Bowl, played in Orlando, Florida, faces off two traditional powerhouses in the former National Champion, the Florida Gators, against the Michigan Wolverines.

Michigan had a rough season. QB Chad Henne and RB Michael Hart came back as seniors to get a shot at the national title. The first game of the year, they lose to Appalachian State. Not the way they wanted it to go.

This Michigan football team ended up 8-4 and lost to Ohio State yet again, leading to Lloyd Carr's resignation as head coach. Is this team strong enough to take down an SEC powerhouse?

Florida was hoping to repeat, though losing 10 starters on defense (and some key back ups) made it an uphill battle. QB Tim Tebow may have had the single greatest season by a college player ever, and is the key to running Urban Meyer's spread offense.

The defense isn't dominant, but it is surprisingly strong for having ten new starters. Enough to go 9-3 in the always difficult SEC.

The Prediction: Michigan can't handle spread teams or running quarterbacks. Uh-oh. Michigan is the 4th biggest underdog of all the bowl teams, and Florida is going to go nuts on them. Florida wins big.

Point Spread: Florida (-10)
America's Prediction: Florida 71%

THE RESULTS: The Big Ten badly needed one of their big teams to step up and deliver an upset. This looked like one of the most unlikely, but Michigan brought their A game, and Florida's defense assumed too much.

On a personal note, this was great to see. Lloyd Carr is a quality coach and a great human being, and this is definitely the right way to see him out. Michigan pulls one of the few shockers of the bowl season, edging Florida 41-35. Predictions: 17-8, 68%

Rose Bowl presented by Citi

2007-2008 Rose Bowl Preview: Illinois vs. USC

There are two BCS bowls on New Year's Day, and the 2008 Rose Bowl is one of them and will display the traditional Pac-10 vs. Big-10 match up with USC against Illinois.

While I always try to give kudos to tradition, taking a 9 win Big Ten team over Arizona State and Missouri really seems stunning, and the result is the biggest point spread of any bowl game, as USC is a 13 point favorite over Illinois.

Illinois had its breakthrough season under Coach Ron Zook. Between a mammoth offensive line and the electric play of QB/ATH Juice Williams, Illinois managed to achieve nine wins, including an upset of Ohio State. The offense can run and score points, but then there's USC.

USC has played its best ball later in the season, and they may be playing the best football of any team in the country right now. Extremely potent on offense, and with one of the better defenses in the country, the Trojans are always ready to play and can put pressure on both sides of the ball. Considering the massive amount of injuries they've had this season, they've been extremely impressive.

The Prediction: Illinois had a good season, but they're one dimensional and lost to Iowa-there's no way they're stopping (or scoring) on USC.

Point Spread USC (-13)
America's Prediction: USC 78%

THE RESULTS: Sometimes tradition is a good thing. Sometimes you should know better. There isn't a person in the country who wishes they could have seen a USC-Georgia match up here instead. So remind me: how is USC's dynasty "over" after winning the Rose Bowl by over 30 points? USC killed Illinois 49-17. Predictions: 18-8, 69%

Allstate Sugar Bowl

2007-2008 Sugar Bowl Preview: Hawaii vs. Georgia

The 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl is the second BCS game played on January 1st. This one is played in New Orleans, Louisiana, and includes the only undefeated team in all of college football as the Hawaii Warriors take on the Georgia Bulldogs in what should be one of the best bowl games of the year.

QB Colt Brennan led Hawaii to an undefeated season and put up record setting stats in June Jones' spread offense. The Warriors have a weak schedule, but they did have an extremely impressive win over Boise State, who is no pushover. The defense isn't spectacular, but it is actually solid for once.

Georgia is one of the more complete teams in college football. They can play the "we were slighted" card in regards to the national title, and QB Matthew Stafford is playing like we all expected at the beginning of the year. This is a complete team that's going to come to play, and you have to think the home field edge goes to Georgia.

The Prediction: This is going to be one of the most entertaining bowl games, but Georgia has the best defense by far, and their offense can score enough points to win a shoot out. Georgia wins.

Point Spread: Georgia (-9 1/2)
America's Prediction: Georgia 70%

THE RESULTS: Well, I thought this would be a better game than it was. Georgia has given notice that they will be a team to watch for the national title next year, and they smashed the Warriors 41-10. Predictions: 19-8, 70%

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

2007-2008 Fiesta Bowl Preview: Oklahoma vs. West Virginia

The 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is the only game played on January 2nd, and takes place in Glendale, Arizona. Big 12 champion Oklahoma will face off against Big East champion West Virginia.

Oklahoma is consistently one of the best teams in the country, and if not for their quarterback's injury against Texas Tech, Oklahoma would have won that game and they'd be in the national title game. Sam Bradford has been outstanding, and is the highest rated passer in the nation, even beating out the likes of Tim Tebow, Matt Ryan, Chase Daniel, and Colt Brennan.

The Sooners defense is one of the most athletic in the country, and the offense is balanced and almost impossible to stop when healthy. Their biggest advantage will be at the defensive line, who will be the biggest challenge to a WVU team trying to keep the spread option game going.

West Virginia's defense has improved dramatically this season, and the offense is the spread option that has struck terror into opponents all season. It's safe to say the Pittsburgh game was a fluke, but can that offense light up a disciplined Oklahoma defense?

QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton are among the best in the nation--no one disputes that, but can they produce against an Oklahoma defense that may be able to disrupt their plays much earlier than either is used to, and how is Pat White's hand going to be?

The Prediction: A good game, but Oklahoma is too powerful on both sides of the ball and they overpower WVU.

THE RESULTS: Oklahoma can try to make excuses about their best DT being suspended, but this time I don't think it would make a difference. West Virginia interim head coach Bill Stewart did so well against Oklahoma that he earned himself the head coaching job. WVU played their best game of the season, and yet another loss brings up a legitimate question: does any coach do less with more than Bob Stoops? WVU romps Oklahoma, 48-26. My predictions: 19-9, 68%

Point Spread: Oklahoma (-6 1/2)
America's Prediction: Oklahoma 67%

FedEx Orange Bowl

2007-2008 Orange Bowl Preview: Virginia Tech vs. Kansas

The 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl between Virginia Tech and Kansas will be played on January 3rd, in Miami, Florida.

Kansas was one of the great stories of this season, though they only faced one ranked opponent in Missouri, and lost the game. Virginia Tech was blown out early by LSU, and lost a heartbreaker to Boston College before getting revenge at the end of the season.

Kansas is a young team with a very solid defense, and an offense that can score both running and passing. Todd Reesing has been outstanding at QB, and the dual back system has given Kansas a potent running game, as well. The defense has athletes and is good against both the run and the pass. They lost to Missouri, but does this team have the talent to overcome its youth and take out an experienced Virginia Tech squad?

Virginia Tech has had an extremely good defense, and their passing game on offense has been far better than usual, making them deadly with that always strong running game from the spread. Aside from one terrible game against LSU, V-Tech has been great all season.

The Prediction: Kansas didn't play anyone, and they barely beat some teams that struggled. While there's a lot of talent here, they haven't faced a defense remotely as good as Virginia Tech's. Virginia Tech does the ACC proud and wins the Orange Bowl.

Point Spread: Virginia Tech (-3 1/2)
America's Prediction: Virginia Tech 51%

THE RESULTS: Missouri still deserved to be in the BCS--but so did Kansas. Did the Big Ten deserve two teams in the BCS? Did the ACC deserve one? Kansas proves they belong, putting the unquestioningly best team in the ACC away, 24-21, in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. Oklahoma embarassed the Big 12, but Kansas comes in with the save. My predictions: 19-10, 65.5%

International Bowl

2007-2008 International Bowl Preview: Rutgers vs. Ball State

Before the 2008 National Title Game there are two "minor" bowls to break up the BCS heavyweights. The International Bowl will be held on January 5th, in Toronto, Canada, appropriately enough. Greg Schiano's Rutgers Scarlet Knights will play the Ball State Cardinals.

Rutgers had a disappointing season, falling out of the Top 25, but they're playing hard and this coach will not let his players quit. Rice is one of the best running backs in the country, and this offense will be able to move on Ball State's defense. The defense of Rutgers, however, is where the questions start.

Ball State will come to play, and have an excellent quarterback in Nate Davis, but he doesn't have enough support to help him, as the schedule results show.

The Prediction: Rutgers finishes on a high note by winning big over Ball State.

Point Spread: Rutgers (-10)
America's Prediction: Rutgers 61%

THE RESULTS: This one pretty much went the way everyone expected. Rutgers was the far superior team, and they blasted Ball State, 52-30 for their second straight bowl win under Coach Schiano. My Predictions: 20-10, 67%

GMAC Bowl

2007-2008 GMAC Bowl Preview: Bowling Green vs. Tulsa

The 2008 GMAC Bowl is played January 6th in Mobile, Alabama. In this game Bowling Green will face off against Tulsa.

Bowling Green has a solid QB in Tyler Sheehan who leads a spread offense that scores over 30 points a game. They are one of the best teams in the MAC and will come ready to play against a resurgent Tulsa team.

QB Paul Smith for Tulsa is no slouch himself, throwing for an incredible 42 TD. Tulsa's offense scores 10 more points a game than Bowling Green's, but they also surrender more points.

The Prediction: Tulsa wins a shoot out where the defenses fail to show up.

Point Spread: Tulsa (-4 1/2)

THE RESULTS: Tulsa absolutely destroyed Bowling Green in what should be the biggest mismatch of the season, 63-7. Really makes you wish Troy State could have swapped out this one. My Predictions: 21-10, 68%

Allstate BCS Championship Game

2007-2008 BCS Championship Game Preview: LSU vs. Ohio State

And on January 7th in New Orleans, Louisiana, is the game we've all been waiting for: the 2008 Allstate BCS Championship Game, featuring #1 Ohio State against #2 LSU. While LSU is an early favorite, this could turn out to be a much closer game than many people think.

Ohio State has had an excellent season. Sophomore running back Chris Wells is averaging over 5 yards a carry and has scored 15 TD. He's been everything he's advertised to be and more. The Ohio State defense is tough, as always, and can stand up and take an offense's best punch. The surprise that has helped springboard their success is in QB Todd Boeckman. He has played extremely well, tossing 23 TD while protecting the ball.

LSU is one of the best teams in the nation when healthy. They have a dual quarterback threat with Matt Flynn and Ryan Perriloux. Both can scramble, though Perriloux is a very strong athlete who can run an effective option. Both have proven capable of running the offense, and aside from being a balanced spread offense, they can power run out of the spread, something that is unusual to find.

The Prediction: Ohio State has a hard time with spread teams, and LSU is a spread team that will still challenge them running. A healthy LSU team is capable of beating OSU, and will do just that. LSU wins the national title.

Point Spread: LSU (-5)
America's Prediction: LSU 69%

THE RESULTS: Doesn't it seem like the best of the SEC just like to toy with the best of the Big Ten? After spotting Ohio State a 10 point lead, LSU clobbered the woefully overmatched Buckeyes and won 38-24 in a game that wasn't even that close most of the night. My Predictions: 22-10, 69%

Guessing at the Conferences

Always an interesting speculation...

Loading poll. Please Wait...

So How Did We Do?

Well here are the final standings for how each major conference did in the bowls:

ACC: 2-6, 25%
Big 10: 3-5, 37.5%
Big East: 3-3, 50%
Big 12: 5-3 62.5%
Pac 10: 4-2, 67%
SEC: 7-2, 78%

So the majority was right, the SEC put on the best show by quite a margin. Another interesting aspect is the records seem to match up pretty evenly with the strength of each conference.

How did the favorites do?

Favorites: 24-8 straight up, a really impressive record considering the insane unpredictability of this year's college football season.
