College Scholarships For Adult Students

More Adults Are Continuing Their Education

Since its lottery-funded scholarships came under fire for discriminating, Arkansas has expanded them, a December report from the Progressive Arkansas suggested. The criticism came after the college scholarships were thought to particularly benefit first-time students who are considered traditional, the Progressive Arkansas report noted. Students who move on to college and university studies immediately after they graduate high school are typically thought of as traditional students.

But the numbers of adults who are continuing their education have been increasing. Information from the US Department of Education's National Center on Education Statistics shows that the number of young students, while increasing more quickly than that of older students, was expected to shift as of 2007. By fall 2010, in fact, many colleges and universities were attributing record enrollments at least in part to adult students.

Free Assistance Finding Schools

Adult student scholarships are available, even though they might not be as readily available as scholarships for high school graduates seem to be. According to the Progressive Arkansas article, the majority of Arkansas' Challenge state scholarships - more than 3,700 of 4,265 - for the spring 2011 semester were awarded to "nontraditional" students. Through Hope Lottery Scholarships in Tennessee, nontraditional beginning freshmen who are 25 years old or older and have an adjusted annual gross income of up to $36,000 might receive assistance.

Adult students might also turn to colleges and universities to see if they offer scholarship assistance. They can even get a free core class through Test Drive College. Adults participating in part-time and full-time studies at a Memphis university are able to obtain as much as $5,500 annually in adult student scholarships. These same students might also renew any scholarships that they receive from the institution.

Free Scholarship Search Engines

Free online search engines provide adult students and others opportunities to search for scholarships. The non-profit College Board, the US Department of Education and the US Department of Labor all offer free online scholarship search engines on the web. Free scholarship search engines are provided also on web sites such as fastweb and scholarships.com.

Conducting searches through different search engines might provide a different scholarship opportunity. In addition to completing scholarship applications in full, financial aid experts recommend that students apply for as many scholarships as possible, that they file their applications as early as possible and that they keep copies of these applications along with any backup documents. Adult students might find scholarships in the $100 range to be less competitive, and they can often combine scholarships and other forms of financial aid.

Complete Your FAFSA

Completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required as part of many scholarship programs. FAFSA, as the application is known, supplies students with an idea of the government financial aid that they might expect to receive, particularly if they have financial needs, and it's available online. FAFSA results are delivered electronically.

Many colleges and universities offer adult students more than just school scholarships, they provide opportunities also to reduce the time and money spent on college and university studies by gaining academic credit for their life experiences. In instances where employers don't offer tuition reimbursement benefits, they might voluntarily establish a 401K-like education savings program that an education association has created. The rising number of adult students in the country might, in reducing the amount of money they spend on college and university studies with financial aid scholarships, find they more quickly enjoy any increased earnings that result from their studies.
