College Football Vs NFL: Which is Better?

One Man's Opinion

College Football Better than NFL

I am a fan of both the NFL and college football. While I have friends, family, and neighbors that think Sunday is the day for football, I've go to admit I find College Football Saturday more compelling. I don't think I can pin it to any one aspect of college football, but my affinity for cheering for my alma mater certainly plays a role. I find the bitter rivalries, the big upsets, the unique game day atmosphere on campus to be compelling. I also find the debates over rankings, BCS bowls, the superiority of one conference over another make College Football my preference over the NFL

Reasons to Prefer College Football Over the NFL

1. The Players. It is fun to see players develop into future NFL stars, but I think what I enjoy most are watching the guys that are maybe a little to small, a little to slow, or a little too short to be NFL prospects, yet make a real difference for their teams purely out of determination and heart.

2. Rankings, Bowls, and BCS. I may be in the minority, but I love the eternal debate over who deserves what ranking, who should go to what bowl, who got shafted by the BCS formula, so on and so forth. These things are never clear cut, but it keeps people talking.

3. The Schemes. The variety of offensive schemes and formations are a real treat to watch. Navy's triple option or Texas Tech pass-happy, point scoring juggernaut simply don't have an equal in the NFL.

4. Upset Saturday. Every week there are a new set of highly ranked teams with a target on their heads. Every week, one or more of them loses to the underdog team. Everyone brings their 'A-game' to play a top rank team.

5. Overtime! The college rules are the only fair way to settle a tie!

6. 19 year old college students sporting face paint and a toga matching their school colors - Hilarious! 49 year old doing the same thing - Midlife crisis

7. College Gameday! I know there are only so many mascot heads that Corso can put on before it gets old, but I love the energy of the on campus pre-game show

8. Coaches. While NFL coaches are often considered only as good as last week's score, legendary college coaches (Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden) get the equivalent of a Supreme Court appointment: coach for life.

9. Cheerleaders! I'll take the sweater clad collegiate cheerleaders any day over the spandex and glitter of the NFL cheerleaders.

10. College is where it all started! Long before the NFL was formed, football was played on many college campuses. In fact, the first college game was played November 6, 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton while the NFL did not reach anything resembling its current form until the 1920's.

College Football Rules!

Deonta Chambers says:

I say High School football is better!!!

Antonio says:

College Football (CFB) brings a higher energy and excitement. For, example, if a team makes a great play offensively of defensively the momentum quickly changing with fans and students cheering so loud that it greatly effects the opposing team. Also, CFB keeps football honest because it's not a business as far the players go, playing their young hearts out. In addition, in order to have a NFL draft you need college players, so without college football there practically would be no NFL. Where do great players c arise from? Hmm... do I even need to answer that?

Paul C. says:

Its all about the plays... college clock stops after first downs... I hate when an NFL running team drives the ball 80 yds for a TD, but took 11mins off the clock. In college you stop to move the chains, as a result, you get to watch 20-30 more plays during the same 60mins. Also, i like the the booth reviews all close calls, in the NFL just during the last 2 mins of each half does the booth intervene... why not get it correct no matter what the time?

I vote College Football! You get to watch them before they turn into prima-donna's!

I love pro ball, but, and you used the right word, college is more compelling! The pros get too spoiled!

The NFL. The BCS ruins college football for me. Basically unless a computer says you are great and you play in a big money, major conference when bowl season comes around, you are reminded the regular season was a waste of time.

funfan says:

I personally prefer the NFL. The games are closer and there are some upsets every week. People make a big deal about college upsets but there are a ton of more games because there are many more teams. I also like the pace of the pro game. The timing rules make most NFL games to flow better though there are way too many commercials in college and pro both.

NFLfan says:

The NFL has close games almost every week, great catches are the norm and the level of play is far superior.

John Le says:

I like nfl better and I'll tell you why:
players I think are more scrutinized and more well-known. U feel like you know these players because if they do good than most likely a long term contract unlike college when after 3 years a new guy at the position.
rankings in the nfl i like better because its more and more simpler competitive with only 32 teams in the league.
schemes i think are more genius in the as shown how some players who thrived in college failed in college
there are upset on sunday though not as much as saturday which i understand because more games going on but it does happen.
overtime i hate nfl rules so i'll give u that
school spirit definitely trumps nfl spirit so i'll give u that too
coaches i think have a tougher job in the nfl because you not only deal with youngsters but you have veterans and more responsibilities
cheerleaders in san diego and dallas are gorgeous and they all wear less clothing
p.s. college is suppose to be the step that prepares many for the nfl and I dislike the fact that some schools do a poor job at it.
