In What it Means to Be a Buckeye, Coach Tressel says: "It means we are extraordinarily blessed and we have an awesome responsibility to uphold the higher standards that have been set before us. It means we have a tradition that is second to none. It means we love Ohio State"
I grew up in the days of Woody Hayes. Well, there was Earle Bruce, and he wasn't so bad. But John Cooper... well, that was just a slap in the face to folks who remembered Woody.
Finally, we have a coach who can really call himself a Buckeye! And look... I'm not the only one who says so.
"I still go to most every game, because I am a Buckeye to the core. Coach Tressel has brought back so much already that you can't help but love the guy. The tradition, so great for so many years, will live on." --Howard Teifke, 1943, 1946-48
What IS a Buckeye, anyway?
A friend asked me this once.
One day I walked into a hotel in Eugene, Oregon, and found a sign that said "Go, Ducks!" After figuring out that it wasn't a typo, I said to someone, "Ducks? How scary are ducks?" And the answer — which I should have predicted — was "Well, at least it's an animal, and not a plant." I never made that mistake again.Yes, the buckeye is a tree. It's a big, strong tree, though! It's even poisonous. That's scary, right?

Ok, I have a new theory. The reason the Bucks are named after a plant, and the reason we have a cute lil mascot, is because the Bucks (the ones who play football) are so tough, they don't need a scary mascot. It's a "walk softly, and carry a big stick" kind of thing. Yeah, that's it. Woody Hayes
Those were the days.
Woody Hayes was a legend.
A big temper and an even bigger big heart, he was the force behind some of the best years the Buckeyes ever had.
He left the Buckeyes in 1978, after his temper got the best of him. In 1987, he passed away.
He is sorely missed.
