Color Blindness

If you are color blind your ability to distinguish between certain colors is reduced, Color blindness is something which is usually inherited and is more common in men than women. It is reported that around 1 in 20 men and 1 in 200 women could be affected by color blindness.

Although it wasn't really a problem to him in his day to day life, my Dad was colour blind, various shades of greens and browns all appeared to be the same hue to him. I'm not even sure that we (my mother and myself) realized that he was color blind until we were out one day looking for a new bathroom suite.

It was in those days when avocado was the must have color for the bathroom.. thank goodness those days are now a memory and white is back in fashion.. my mother had mentioned that she liked the avocado suite but my color blind dad told her that he had seen a nice coffee colored one. She scanned the showroom but couldn't see any sign of the coffee colored bathroom. It was no wonder, because the coffee colored suite was actually the avocado color that my mum wanted anyway!

Being color blind need not necessarily be a problem but it could be an obstacle to certain careers where good color vision is important.

Well, yes, of course women can be color blind, but figures indicate that there are 10 times more males than females who are color blind.
I am interested to see for myself whether the figures are correct and 10x more men than women are affected by color blindness.

Why Does Color Blindness Happen?

What causes color blindness?

close up of human eye

The retina of the eyes has cells, called cones, which detect color and which are necessary to see color properly. There are three types of cone cell, sensitive to red, blue, or green light. If one or more of these cone cells are faulty, then color blindness results.

Colour blindness may also occur because of certain diseases such as macular degeneration or from side effects of medicines.

What Is Color Blindness?

There are different types of color blindness

There are a number of different types of color blindness. The most common being red/green colour blindness, which involves confusion between the colors red and green. This type of color blindness is inherited through a faulty colour vision gene and has two forms:

  • different shades of red appear dull and indistinct

  • greens, oranges, pale reds and browns all appear to be the same hue, distinguished only by their intensity
Those who are not colorblind should be able to distinguish the number 6 in the image to the right.

Other, more rare, forms of colour blindness are:
  • where blues and yellows can't be distinguished.

  • All colours are seen in black and white.

What Type Of Color Blindness Do You Have?

Now, if you have indicated that you are affected by color blindness in the survey above, would you please help by indicating which type of color blindness you have.

Will Color Blindness Affect Your Life?

traffic lights
Colour blindness will not becessarily affect your life but it may limit your choice of career.

For example, being color blind needn't stop someone driving as traffic lights can be distinguished by the position of the light. But people affected by color blindness will be affected in their choice of careers by not being able to take up a career where good colour vision is important, including pilots, electricians, train drivers and some jobs in the printing, fashion and design industries.

The Ishihara Color Blind Test is the most common test used to diagnose colour blindness, it is a test for red/green color confusion.
This test consists of a number of colored pictures each of which contain a circle of dots appearing randomized in color and size. Within the pattern are dots which form a number visible to those with normal color vision and invisible, or difficult to see, for those with a red-green color vision defect.

The The Farnsworth D-15 test is well known and belongs to a category of color blindness tests called Color Arrangement Tests. The tests are based on different colors which have to be arranged in the correct order. According to the order you choose a tester can find out if you are suffering from a red-, green- or blue-color deficiency.

The French optician Jean Jouannic offers an Online Multiple Choice Color Blindness Test based on 31 images. The images are either hidden signs and letters or a handful of colors which you have to match to a choice of color names. As colorblind people show great difficulties matching color names to colors, this is another appropriate method to test color vision. The test has some nice statistics when you have finished and tries to quantify your color blindness in detail.

You can as you have seen take a color blind test online. However, because our computer screens are set up differently with differing degrees of brightness and color depth, the tests might not be as accurate as we would ideally like.

This book is great because the Color Blind Test uses easy to recognise symbols, instead of numbers or letters which some young children may have difficulty recognizing, so this makes the test suitable for everyone over the age of around 3!

It is particularly useful to have to give as a quick test to a potential employee if you are an employer who needs to hire people for a job where good color vision is important!

Take The Color Blind Test For Kids Online

There is a color blind test for children available to take online

This Waggoner color blind test above is a color blind test for kids who are about 4 - 5 years old or those who don't know their numbers yet.
The thirteen test plates use three symbols (circle, star, square) instead of numbers.
Waggoner believes that most color normal children should be able to correctly identify 11 out of the thirteen test plates.

Children can take this color blind test online, but I haven't been able to find a site which does the color blind test for kids free as yet.
If you want your kid to take the colorblind test on line the cost, at the time of writing, is $4.99.

I do not have color blindness but I do had my both eye operated for cataract and the lenses in both my eye are different type where one of it is uv protected and the other one is not, so when certain clothes that uses brightener as the colorant, I can see different in color when I see it on one eye alternately.

My Uncle Jim was totally colorblind - saw everything in shades of gray. His wife used to color code his clothes for him. :-) Once he was home visiting without her and chose his clothes himself and had the most awful combination on -- he didn't care because he couldn't see it!

I remember when we were teenagers, my brother and I once tried to work out mathematically the possibility that one of our children (out of 4 siblings) would end up with color blindness (none did) and I taught my children their colors early to try and determine whether or not they were color blind. So, guess I have had a bit of experience with color blindness. Fascinating article. Congratulations on the Front Page appearance.

I have had just about every color blindness test there is. Some times it kind of freaks people out when they find out I am color blind. The worst for me is getting dressed. I have to have help in when purchasing a new suit to be sure the shirts and ties all match.

But, like anything I have learned to adjust and live with it.

So aside from learning about this subject I've also come out of it very humble and grateful, thank you for sharing this with us, and great job on this lens.

My problem is telling the difference between black, navy, brown and dark green. I resorted to buying my husband and son all black socks because sometime my husband would get to work with one black and one dark green sock. Also I had a dark green (or so my family said) dress but when I wore it to work I always thought I was wearing brown.
