Color Blindness
Although it wasn't really a problem to him, my Dad was color blind, various shades of greens and browns all appeared to be the same hue to him. I'm not even sure that we (my mother and myself) realized that he was color blind until we were out one day looking for a new bathroom suite. It was in those days when avocado was the must have color for the bathroom.. thank goodness those days are now a memory and white is back in fashion.. my mother had mentioned that she liked the avocado suite but my dad told her that he had seen a nice coffee colored one. She scanned the showroom but couldn't see any sign of the coffee colored bathroom. It was no wonder, because the coffee colored suite was actually the avocado color that my mum wanted anyway!
Being color blind need not necessarily be a problem but it could be an obstacle to certain careers where good color vision is important.
Why Does Color Blindness Happen?
What causes color blindness?
Colour blindness may also occur because of certain diseases such as macular degeneration or from side effects of medicines.
What Is Color Blindness?
There are a number of different types of color blindness. The most common being red/green colour blindness, which involves confusion between the colors red and green. This type of color blindness is inherited through a faulty colour vision gene and has two forms:- different shades of red appear dull and indistinct
- greens, oranges, pale reds and browns all appear to be the same hue, distinguished only by their intensity
Other, more rare, forms of colour blindness are:
- where blues and yellows can't be distinguished.
- All colours are seen in black and white.
Color blindness does not affect vision itself
only the ability to distinguish between certain colours.
The Ishihara Color Test Is The Most Common
But this test is not suitable for very young children who haven't learnt to recognise numbers yet
The Ishihara Color Test is a test for red-green color deficiencies. It was named after its designer, Dr. Shinobu Ishihara, a professor at the University of Tokyo, who first published his tests in 1917. S. Ishihara, Tests for colour-blindness (Handaya, Tokyo, Hongo Harukicho, 1917).
The test consists of a number of colored plates, called Ishihara plates, each of which contain a circle of dots appearing randomized in color and size. Within the pattern are dots which form a number visible to those w...
Take An Online Color Blind Test
This test consists of a number of colored pictures each of which contain a circle of dots appearing randomized in color and size. Within the pattern are dots which form a number visible to those with normal color vision and invisible, or difficult to see, for those with a red-green color vision defect.
The The Farnsworth D-15 test is well known and belongs to a category of color blindness tests called Color Arrangement Tests. The tests are based on different colors which have to be arranged in the correct order. According to the order you choose a tester can find out if you are suffering from a red-, green- or blue-color deficiency.
The French optician Jean Jouannic offers an Online Multiple Choice Color Blindness Test based on 31 images. The images are either hidden signs and letters or a handful of colors which you have to match to a choice of color names. As colorblind people show great difficulties matching color names to colors, this is another appropriate method to test color vision. The test has some nice statistics when you have finished and tries to quantify your color blindness in detail.

You can as you have seen take a color blind test online. However, because our computer screens are set up differently with differing degrees of brightness and color depth, the tests might not be as accurate as we would ideally like.
This book is great because it uses easy to recognise symbols, instead of numbers or letters which some young children may have difficulty recognizing, so this makes the test suitable for everyone over the age of around 3!
It is particularly useful to have to give as a quick test to a potential employee if you are an employer who needs to hire people for a job where good color vision is important!

- My problem is telling the difference between black, navy, brown and dark green. I resorted to buying my husband and son all black socks because sometime my husband would get to work with one black and one dark green sock. Also I had a dark green (or so my family said) dress but when I wore it to work I always thought I was wearing brown.
