Color of Mulch

Does the Color of Mulch Really Matter?

Like anything else, mulch comes in various colors and choosing the right color of mulch for your home may be a challenge.

Here's some pictures of a home and it's landscaping with various colors of mulch. I'm going to show you some Sherwin Williams exterior color ranges that will look great with these mulches.

Black Mulch

Check with your HOA's for rules and regulations if you have color restrictions on mulch. Also, if you have a historic home you may be locked into a certain color of mulch.

For the most part, if you want black mulch, your home should be in the color range that I've provided below. Of course black goes with any color but the problem with this dark hue is that's very noticeable. You'd want your home to blend with it. At least if your door and shutters were black (or any very dark color) it would balance out nicely.

Brown Mulch

Brown mulchAs you move into the warm mulch tones like this brown, it becomes a bit easier to match up to your home.

Why? Because as you see from the Sherwin Williams color samples I've provided below, you mostly see brown hues. Many people choose brown, tan, taupe and beige for their home because it's a "safe" color. Also, many colors, from shutters to awnings, will coordinate well with browns.

This would be my #1 choice for mulch color and it's actually what I have in my home landscaping.

Orange Mulch

If you don't already know, blue and orange are complementary colors and look great together. So if your home is blue, navy, light or gray blue, this would be a great mulch choice for you.

Red Mulch

red mulch donna frascaI don't really like this color mulch and I'll tell you why. To me, it's the first thing you see when you look at this house. Do you really think the mulch is the first thing you should notice at your home? The only time I would suggest this red mulch is if you had a brick home or a house with a dominant color. In that case, the house and mulch color would balance each other out.

Keep in mind your door and shutter color also, not just the main color of your house. I've had this color before and it fades rather quickly then you're left with a wishy washy mulch color.

To make it extra challenging, you can also consider the color scheme of your garden when deciding on a mulch color. Is you garden mainly evergreens? White flowers? Purple? Red?

I know, so much to consider. If you need help with your color choices, contact me for a consultation.
