Color Scheme Inspiration: Peacock Colors

Iridescendent Sparks of the Color of the Rainbow

In 1634, Sir Theodore de Mayerne, physician to Charles I, observed that the 'eyes' on the wings of the peacock butterfly "shine curiously like stars, and do cast about them sparks of the color of the Rainbow; by these marks is it so known that it would be needless to describe the rest of the body though painted with a variety of colors."

The colors of the peacock feather continue to inspire designers and decorators today. The beauty of the color palette of the peacock feather is that as you look at the feather from different angles the colors that appear can change from the coolest of blues and greens to warm gold, bronze or brown.

Choose colors from the peacock palette that best suit your design's style and mood.

'Pretty as a Peacock' Blue

The one common element of the color schemes inspired by this regal bird is Peacock Blue.

The term 'Peacock Blue' has been used to describe a range of color in the blue-green family. Some more blue, others more green but I have found that most often is calls to mind a color as the one shown here.

This picture is from a post I wrote about trying to find a paint color that matched the Peacock Blue sweater set I was wearing--The 'Perfect Blue' at House Beautiful Color Institute --when this hue became the topic of conversation after my presentation.

Blue and Green Should Never Be Seen? Agree or Disagree?

One of these days I need to find out exactly where that old saying came from but as far as I'm concerned this is a design 'rule' you can forget about!

In the same way that the clear blue of the sky and the vibrant green of a field can create a breathtaking landscape these two colors can create a harmonious color scheme for all kinds of designs.

Peacock Alley at the Waldorf-Astoria, NY

The interior decor of the famous Peacock Alley at the Waldorf-Astoria, NY focuses on the signature colors of the namesake bird.

The main color of the decor in this stately dining room is slightly more green than the hue above but is equally as gorgeous.

Color Trends for Blue-Green

Color Trends for Blue-GreenKiki and I have been talking about the popularity of this hue for some time. Kiki wrote a post for Trend Tuesday: Going Blue-Green.

I wrote the post--The 'Perfect Blue' at House Beautiful Color Institute after this hue became the topic of conversation during my presentation.

Julie showed us how the peacock motif is on trend this year in her post --

Kiki was back with more about the peacock inspired color scheme and how it is showing up in holiday decor in The Color of the Year Brings Christmas Cheer

Blue-Green made headlines when Pantone named Turquoise their Color of the Year.

But Pantone wasn't the only color forecasting group that gave this color a nod as I share in my post-- Three Takes on the Color of the Year

Yellow-Green and Blue-Green Color Scheme

One of the most popular color combinations includes the blue-green or Peacock Blue with yellow-green.

This is usually seen as a two color scheme that includes a variety of tints, tones and shades of each hue.

In the post Trend Tuesday: Going "Blue-Green" you can see many color schemes based on creating color harmony with Peacock Blue.

Blue-Green/Yellow-Green Holiday Color Scheme

I found this collage of the blue-green/yellow-green tabletop decor on weddingwire.com and think it nicely shows off this color scheme.

Multi-Color Peacock Scheme

Red-violet is a hue that isn't immediately seen but it can appear as the feather catches the light in certain directions. It is an addition to the color scheme that adds interest and evokes the more sensual qualities of this scheme.

In fact many of the current designs based on this color scheme or the peacock motif use this multi-color palette. You can see some examples in Julie's post -- Pretty as a Peacock

Adding Warmth to the Cool Peacock Colors

Bringing in the gold, bronze or brown found in the feathers helps to balance out the cooler blues and greens.

This example of a contemporary living room appeared in Domino magazine and is included in Kiki's post on the Color for Your Home blog -- Trend Tuesday: Going "Blue-Green"

Picking Up the Warm Hues in the Iridescent Feathers

I really like the way gold and bronze work with Peacock Blue but as you can see in the 'eye' on the feather this combination is one that goes together naturally. No wonder it is so 'eye-catching'!

Mary McDonald Creates a Winter Wonderland With Peacock Feathers

I fell in love with the way Mary McDonald's peacock-inspired decor in Veranda magazine. Here is a quote from the article:

For the Los Angeles designer Mary McDonald, every room tells a story with objects, colors, patterns and textures that reveal character and evoke a desired mood or feeling. Like a film director, she is bound only by the limits of her imagination. Each Christmas in her Beverly Hills home, she creates a new story, drawing inspiration from her world travels and wide-ranging tastes. This holiday season, she has transformed her English-style country house into a winter wonderland infused with Gilded Age glamour.

"Christmas gives me the opportunity to create an evocative, almost theatrical setting with beautiful treasures I collect on my trips," says McDonald, whose visit to India last year yielded a trove of peacock feathers. "This year, I wanted a rich, exotic look that was warm and festive without being too traditional. I love tradition, but I also love drama and a touch of fantasy."

Peacock Inspired Interior Paint Colors

Like Julie I love the famous Peacock Dining Room, designed by the artist James McNeill Whistler for the art collector Frederick Leyland's London home but that is just one of many color that can work beautifully in your home.

Above are some other interior paint colors from House Beautiful that you might try: Benjamin Moore's Baltic Blue, Mills Spring Blue, Hague Blue and Farrow and Ball's Pelt all make an interesting foil to Benjamin Moore's Paddington Blue (a real peacock blue designer Robin Bell tells House Beautiful).

The wonderful blues, greens, and purples of a peacock's tail feathers catch the eyes of potential mates and those of us that love the iridescent colors.

It is tiny reflective crystals that give the peacock its fantastic color scheme and produce pure colors, like blue, green, yellow, and purple.
