When walking through a garden, for some reason I'm drawn toward the purple flowers. Maybe it's because they're not as common as all the pinks, yellows and whites that most gardens hold.

Purple adds depth, drama, substance and subdues other bright colors creating harmony in your garden.

Bloom Time: Early spring.
Size: 2 to 5 inches high, 4 inches wide.
Flowers: Cup-shaped blooms of purple, white, yellow and striped.
Light Needs: Full sun.

Bloom Time: Midsummer through first frost.
Size: 5 to 15 feet high.
Flowers: Tubular blooms of purple, white, pink or yellow.
Light Needs: Full sun or light shade.

Hydrangea

Hardiness: Zones 4 to 9, varies slightly by species.
Bloom Time: Summer.
Size: 6 to 22 feet high, 8 feet wide.
Flower: Shades of pink white and purplish-blue flowers, either large pompons or flattened clusters of blooms.
Light Needs: Partial shade.

Persian Shield

Hardiness: Zones 9 - 10.
Bloom Time: Persian shield is everpurple in zones 10 and 11; it dies to the ground after frost, but may sprout back in spring in zone 9 and possibly in zone 8, especially if you mulch the roots.
Size: 3-4 ft tall with a 2-3 ft spread.
Flowers: variegated dark green and silvery-metallic purplish-pink on top and all purple underneath. The leaves shimmer with iridescence. The little flowers are just an afterthought with this showy foliage plant. They are funnel-shaped, pale violet, and arranged on short spikes.
Light Needs: Partial shade.

Size: 4 to 30 feet high, 3 feet wide.
Flowers: Dozens of colors including white, pink, red, purple, blue, and yellow. Some have multicolored blooms.
Light needs: Full sun to partial shade.

Lavender

Botanical Name: Lavandula.
Hardiness: Zones 5 to 10.
Bloom Time: Summer.
Size: 1 to 4 feet high, 1 to 4 feet wide.
Flowers: Pinkish purple.
Light Needs: Full sun.

Botanical Name: Viola x wittrockiana.
Hardiness: Zones 4 to 8.
Bloom Time: Varies by cultivar. Most types perform best in the cooler weather of spring or autumn. In warmer climates, some varieties can be used as winter annuals.
Size: 6 to 9 inches high and 9 to 12 inches wide.
Flowers: Purple, white, yellow, orange, and red. Bi-colored flowers with a face-like pattern are the most common; shape is five overlapping petals, some with ruffled edges.
Light needs: Full sun to partial shade.

    I was thinking that I don't have much purple in my garden but your wonderful lens reminded me about all of the purple blooms from buddelia to pansies, clematis to lavender and more.
