Colorado Education

Ranked #93,950 in Education, #1,415,704 overall

Best in the State

It would seem like The University of Colorado at Boulder would be the obvious choice. It is, after all, the flagship university of the University of Colorado system.

There is a major drawback, however, that kept me from choosing this as my Best in the State of Colorado. Marijuana culture has a major presence on campus.

Now in my Maryland Education page, I chose the University of Maryland, College Park as my pick for Best in the State, in spite of Maryland's being named High Times #1 counter-culture university. I also said that you can avoid cannabis culture (which is mainly pro-cannabis activism) at UMD. Boulder is a whole different animal.

On April 20, 2008, 10 thousand students lit up on the University of Colorado at Boulder's Norlin quad. That would be a record number of participants for the dubious annual tradition. That's almost 40% of the undergraduate student body; 10 thousand blatantly defying the law in broad daylight. Not to protest, just to celebrate marijuana culture.

The press for the event has continually hurt CU's reputation and the university has gone to great lengths to hide these stories. Understandably so.

Now I am aware that drugs are a big part of college culture, but when I hear about a record number of potheads smoking on the quad of a flagship university, it's pretty clear to me that the student body doesn't put academics first. Moreover, it means that the student body has such little respect for their own University, that they selfishly carry out this act despite the damning effect it has on their university's reputation.

Do you think Princeton students would shame their University in this fashion? I don't think so. They would probably realize that their behavior reflects on their university and out of sheer pride, they would be on their best behavior. If you're really into drugs, then Boulder is for you, otherwise, stay far away.

If you really want to get "high," you should check out my pick for the Best in the State: The United States Air Force Academy. Trust me, it didn't win by default. Air Force is the only Service Academy to be named my "Best in the State," and for good reason.

First of all, one of the core values of the Academy is "Service Before Self," the Boulder kids should pay attention. The other two values are "Integriy First" and "Excellence in All We Do."

USAFA is U.S. News' best baccalaureate college in the western region. That means it offers a great undergraduate academic program, but offers nothing in the way of graduate programs. If it did, I'm quite positive that it would be in the U.S. News' national university ranking.

The first two years of the study are primarily spent on the core curriculum classes. Junior and senior years are when you can really branch out and focus on your chosen major.

Cadets are divided into squadrons of about 110 cadets, and there are 10 squadrons in each of the Academy's four groups. Cadets eat, march, and compete in intramural athletics by squadron.

All cadets must participate in the schools athletic program to enhance their physical abilities and develop leadership skills. They either participate in intramural or intercollegiate athletics.

I think that more universities should do something like this; college should be a place where you develop you body as well as your mind.

Air Force offers several categories of physical education classes, which are required per semester. Combative classes like boxing and judo, survival ability classes like swimming, team sports like basketball and soccer to build group skills, and "lifetime" sports like golf.

Cadets are also subjected to physical tests and intensive military training, which can be very demanding at the school's high altitude.

The Air Force Falcons have a service academy rivalry with Army and Navy, and compete for the "Commander in Chief's Trophy" in football each year. The Division I teams compete largely in the Mountain West Conference, typically with great success. But the high-altitude home games do give the cadets an advantage over teams from lower altitudes.

The campus, just North of Colorado Springs, is over 7 thousand feet above sea-level. It attracts 1 million tourists a year and is a National Historic Landmark. The "Air Gardens" on the Terrazzo are a particularly beautiful sight to behold, with their marble walkway, lighted pools and grassy beds.

The Cadet Chapel is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful buildings in modern American architecture. The Chapel houses areas for Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and inter-faith worship.

The education is free, but the academy expects you to repay the government with a term of service. But if you want to pursue engineering or the sciences, or even the military ad a career, that term is a small price to pay. The education given at the Air Force Academy in those areas is really top-flight.

But admission is a long and arduous process, and prospective cadets are subject to the highest of admission standards. A physical is required, and you will need near-perfect eye-sight if you want to spent any time in the air. You must also receive a nomination from a congressman to be accepted.

Most candidates begin the paperwork during their junior year of high school.

Outside of all that, an education at Air Force does afford you the opportunity to play with some of the most fun toys on the planet: gliders, T-38 Talons, and perhaps even the legendary F-15E Eagle.

Study in the Centennial State

Public:
  • University of Colorado at Boulder

  • Colorado State University

  • United States Air Force Academy

  • Colorado School of Mines

  • University of Northern Colorado
The University of Colorado at Boulder is the state's flagship University. The nation's 79 best university, according to U.S. News and World Report, costs a remarkably affordable $5.6 thousand a year instate, $22 thousand out of state.

The Economist rated the University of Colorado at Boulder's undergraduate science program as the 11th best in the nation. It receives more money from NASA than any other university and has produced several NASA astronauts.

The business program at CU is also well respected. The undergraduate business program ranks 39 in the nation with the entrepreneurship program rated 14 in the nation. The MBA program is ranked 26 among public universities.

The University of Colorado National History Museum is one of the preeminent collections in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains regions.

The Colorado Buffaloes have a major rivalry with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and an instate rivalry with the Colorado State Rams, better known as the "Rocky Mountain Showdown." The Buffaloes have won the national championship in skiing 16 times. Small wonder.

The University also has one of the biggest club sports departments in the U.S.

The Boulder Freeride club is the University's ski and snowboard club, and the largest such group in the nation. Because outdoor sports are a major part of Colorado life, I highly suggest you give this club a chance. Attend their annual "Welcome Freeriders" event; one of the University's biggest events. The club also makes an annual ski trip to Aspen. If you are interested in gliding down the snowy peaks of the Rocky Mountains, CU, may be the school for you.

Conversely, if you dream about soaring majestically over the Rocky Mountains, the United States Air Force Academy may be the place for you. Much more so if during those dreams you shoot down Migs. But Air Force offer much more than just military acumen.

Air Force specializes in science and engineering, because graduates are called upon to manage and maintain the most sophisticated equipment in the U.S. military. The engineering program is among the best in the world for that very reason. But recently, USAFA has begun to implement more courses in the humanities.

If you want to pursue a respected degree in Engineering, and the idea od a term of service if not appealing to you, the Colorado School of mines is another Colorado university to consider. It is actually Colorado's highest rated national university. U.S. News ranked it 75 overall. It also has the state's highest admission standards.

The School of mines is devoted to the study of Engineering and the Applied Sciences. Because of the school's experience with management of earthly resources and mission to use the Earth responsibly, it provides a truly unique educational experience.

The school also operates a very prestigious geology museum with rare specimens from Colorado's many mining districts, samples from the Frank Allison Gold and Silver Collection, and Meteorites from outer space.

The Colorado School of Mines just completed a new student recreation center and is expanding all the time. Expect that number 75 rating to go up in the very near future.

Colorado State University in Fort Collins is ranked the number 124 national University by U.S. News. The Princeton Review and Consumers Digest named it as one of the best value colleges in the U.S. with one of the Princeton Review's top 10 administered MBA programs.

CSU has the nation's second best Veterinary Medicine program, according to U.S. News. It's Occupational Therapy Master's is the nation's seventh best; Career and Technical Education eight.

Fort Collins is rated as one of Money Magazine's best places to live, and students have access to skiing, hiking and mountain biking nearby.

Many of the dormitories offer theme floors for students with shared interest.

Private:
  • Colorado College

  • University of Denver

  • Regis University
People either love or hate the Colorado College block system that breaks each academic year into 8 "blocks." Students only take one class during each three and a half week block.

Proponents argue that it is conducive to a more intensive academic experience and allows for field trips and more lab time; something that is simply not practical with a normal schedule. Dissenters claim it's just stupid.

I don't know who is right, but the students seem to like it. Colorado College has one of the nation's best retention rates at a staggering 96%.

CC is one of the nation's best colleges, currently ranked 26 among liberal arts colleges by U.S. News. It only enrolls about 2 thousand students. Classes are capped at around 30 students to make sure the learning environment is as personal as possible.

Even though it is a small school, Colorado College isn't hurting in the athletics department. Most teams compete on the Division III level. Hockey and Women's Soccer, however, play Division I in Conference USA. The hockey team is particularly formidable, having won four national championships and reaching the Frozen Four as recently as 2005. Hockey fans should fit right in here.

Regis University, a Roman Catholic college, has seven campuses in Colorado. Its main campus is located in Denver. Regis is one of the 28 members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

It is ranked the number 26 Western Master's university by U.S. News. Three schools comprise the Denver campus. Regis College is the liberal arts school. The Ruekert-Hartman College for Health Professionals has a very well respected nursing program and also has three other disciplines. The College of Professional Studies is geared towards working people and offers condensed classes and online courses.

Much like Regis University's Denver campus, The University of Denver's campus is also designated an arboretum.

The University of Denver is the nation's number 85 university, just tailing the University of Colorado. Many of the University's graduate programs rank among the nation's best, including the Law, Business, and Foreign Policy, Social Work and Professional Psychology schools.

The Daniels College of Business has received special praise for producing graduates with high ethical standards.

Because it is a private school, it is going to run you a little more. Tuition is about $32 thousand a year. admissions standards are slightly more lax; a 3.6 GPA and 1200 is about average for an incoming DU student.
