The High Country of Colorado! Great for Skiing in the Winter, Hiking and Camping in the Summer!

The "High Country of Colorado"? The Whole State is HIGH! Colorado is the only state in the USA that lies entirely above 3,281 feet (1000 meters) in elevation

And MOUNTAINS? High Ones?  Colorado has more than 500 mountain peaks that exceed 13,123 feet (4,000 meters) elevation. Mount Elbert at 14,440 feet (4,401.2 meters) elevation in Lake County is the state's highest point and the highest point in the entire Rocky Mountains.

The State of Colorado in the Rocky Mountains area of the western United States of America is considered to be part of the Western and Southwestern region of the US. Colorado is the 8th largest state in the USA with 104,100 square miles of impressive mountains on its western side and expansive plains on its eastern side.  Denver is the capital city and is the most populated city of Colorado. In 2006, the Colorado state population count was about 4.75 million people, making it the 24th most populous state in the USA.

Like the states of Montana, Wyoming, to the north and New Mexico to the south, Colorado straddles the Continental DivideFour major rivers originate in Colorado--the Colorado River, Rio Grande, Arkansas River, and South Platte River. The Colorado River heads west for the Pacific Ocean via the Sea of Cortez (and forms the Grand Canyon on the way), the other three rivers head east toward the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Colorado's borders form a geoellipsoidal rectangle stretching from 37°N to 41°N latitude and from 102°03'W to 109°03'W longitude (25°W to 32°W from the Washington Meridian). As such, Colorado is one of only three U.S. states (with Wyoming and Utah) that have only lines of latitude and longitude for boundaries.

Diversity of the Landscape Provides Strange Weather Patterns!

One of the first things that really got my attention when I arrived at Denver International Airport, was the Tornado Shelter signs at the entrances to the various restrooms around the terminal buildings (they must build those things like bunkers!).

The plains of eastern Colorado are part of the United States Great Plains area known as "Tornado Alley". Unlike the hurricanes and typhoons and cyclones that take a long time to form and provide a long advance time for warning and preparation, tornados strike with little warning, so when an alarm sounds that one is near, you must seek shelter quickly and without delay. Many houses in the Great Plains have basements with protected cement areas or perhaps an outdoor "tornado shelter"--almost like a bomb shelter.

On another side, there are times when you can be running around in a T-shirt and jeans at the base of the Front Mountain Range that borders the eastern plains and look up at the mountains and see glaciers and snow-fields. It can be sunny and mild at the base of the mountains, and then, you can drive a few miles up into the mountains, Estes Park, for instance, and be caught in a blizzard. This is why it is wise to carry parkas and snow gear in your car at all times--even in the summer. There are always stories the locals tell of unsuspecting tourists getting caught in the mountains with only a pair of shorts and a T-shirt and darn-near freezing to death.

Dinosaurs in Colorado? Yup! There's a Town Named "Dinosaur" in Colorado!

The headquarters for Dinosaur National Park are located in the town of Dinosaur, Colorado. But although these dinosaurs resemble those found by the archeologists in the badlands of Montana in the movie Jurassic Park, these dinosaurs remain "petrified" and "fossilized" and don't move around like the "living dinosaurs" such as monitor lizards and crocodilians.

Thousands of Years of Native American Culture In Colorado

From the Anasazi, who populated the great Cliff Dwellings of Mesa Verde and who drew the petroglyphs that illustrated their way of life (and frequently Kokopelli on the rock escarpments around the state, to the now very modern descendants of the Ute, Shoshone, Jicarilla Apache, and Navajo tribes. Their culture is appreciated throughout Colorado with the evidence of warm wool patterned blankets, beautiful pottery, baskets, and jewelry, and their distinct foods (such as Indian "fry-bread") that have been incorporated into the general culture of the state.

Hi Dave ~ in one of those pictures in the slide show, is that young man wearing sandals with no socks???

Dave, this is a great lens ~ I found it because it showed up in the "related pages" section of my lens about Wichita, KS... a lens about the two Arkansas rivers that converge there. The Big Arkansas ~ as you may know although you may not use "Big" in front of it ~ has its headwaters in Colorado.

This is really lovely ~ definitely a 5 star work!
