Colorado Technical University - A University of Choices

I started teaching full-time at Colorado Technical University on March 2005 found it to be a rewarding experience since my retirement from the United States Air Force in July 2003.

This lens has articles, photos, and videos about Colorado Technical University (CTU). You'll also read articles describing the Electrical and Systems Engineering programs as well as robotics applications. After reviewing the contents of this page, you'll agree that CTU can offer you a life-changing and rewarding experience just as rewarding as my Air Force career.

For example, the above photo shows four recent CTU graduates of Fall 07 in Dec.  They graduated having a Master's in Electrical Engineering who took all four of the CTU graduate classes that I am currently teaching:  satellite communications, digital signal processing, digital communications, and spread spectrum communications.  One of the students is from  Ghana, Africa and was recently offered a job by a company affiliated with the oil industry at Houston.  Another student not only received a Masters in Electrical Engineering but worked hard to get a double degree...the other degree being in Computer Engineering..one of the best students during my teaching career.

I am currently a Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering.  I will discuss what CTU is about and then specifically discuss our degree programs in Electrical and Systems Engineering Programs. For those interested in Electrical or Systems Engineering, please contact me at john@e-liteworks.com

Master of Science in Systems Engineering

Colorado Technical University, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Many defense companies such as Honeywell, Lockheed, Boeing and others need systems engineering to deliver complex systems under government contracts. Unfortunately, these companies can't wait for junior engineers to become "seasoned" systems engineers. To shorten the life-cycle associated to develop these professions will require a university-level curriculum to fill the void. Only a handful of U.S. universities have a systems engineering programs.

At Colorado Technical University (CTU), we developed a strong systems engineering curriculum over the past few years. We had lots of help from the industry advisory board (IAB) representing corporate partners in Colorado. CTU is a four-year university that is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

We have a full range of degree programs ranging from associate's to doctorate levels in areas such as engineering, computer science, information technology, and management.

Also, CTU has two undergraduate engineering programs (electrical and computer engineering) that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Finally, CTU has over four decades of experience providing tailored, corporate programs to numerous companies both in Colorado and nationally. Most corporate offerings are done on-site at time convenient to the customer.

CTU offers two Systems Engineering (SE) certificates (two courses each)to address bringing "green" systems engineer up to speed, as well as filling knowledge gaps for more experienced systems engineers, systems integrators, project engineers, etc.

The certificates are part of an eleven-course master's degree program, the Master of Science in Systems Engineering. The SE program is the first at CTU to be designed for "hybrid" offering from the ground up. Each course meets once per week for four hours, while completing the remainder of the course online. Courses are designed to be completed in 5-1/2 weeks, however CTU has te flexibility to design offerings to fit nearly any corporate timing requirement. CTU can also make reasonable modifications to any course to tailor the objectives to a particular corporate need.

Because the CTU SE Industry Advisory Board has strong International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) representation, we are not positioned to not only provide the educational component of certification, but also to help students prepare for the certification exam. Since 2003, CTU has been an INCOSE sponsor, and periodic meetings for the Rocky Mountain chapter (Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs)are held at the CTU campus. SE students are highly encouraged to join INCOSE since student membership is very inexpensive.

Certificate Programs. Two SE certificates are offered with the master's degree program. The first certificate provides the foundation for systems engineering work, and the courses are designed to be taken in succession. The second certificate provides advanced systems analysis and design tools, as well as systems management tools specifically geared to government contracts. The courses in the second SE certificate need not be taken in order.

Master of Science in Systems Engineering - Part 2

As mentioned before the design of today's complex products and systems must approach product and system development in a systematic manner.

Systems engineering must provide life-cycle processes offering detailed analysis of the requirements, requirements traceability, detailed documentation, modern design synthesis techniques and a thorough validation that the design meets specifications. Designers and managers must also observe accepted quality assurance standards and use project management techniques to ensure meeting budget, schedule and quality requirements.

The Master of Science in Systems Engineering is designed to help you learn these essential skills.

Otherwise a junior engineer could take years of experience on the job to obtain. The CTU SE program has been designed by industry experts to meet industry needs for systems engineering (SE) skills.

So what skills can you learn? Students who successfully complete the Master of Science in Systems Engineering should be able to:

Plan, manage and participate in the complete SE life-cycle process and sub-processes from commercial industry and government contractor perspectives.

Select and apply modern SE tools, including operations research, system odeling/simulation/test methods, synthesis techniques, process control and system integration tools.

Define the role and scope of SE and its interface with the related areas of project management, operations, logistics, performance, test, manufacturing, training and support, reliability/maintainability, quality assurance and disposal.

Select and apply appropriate industry/government standards, models, metrics and documentation standards incorporated in SE practice.
Apply oral and written communications skills essential to the SE process.

What are some possible career opportunities?
Today, many companies hire for "systems engineer" positions. Other job titles include integration engineer, requirements engineer, engineering project manager, and validation and verification engineer.

Built-in Professional Certificates
The Master of Science in Systems Engineering degree program includes the following built-in Professional Certificates:
Systems Engineering
Advanced Systems Engineering
These Professional Certificates can be earned without additional courses. Back to Degree Listing
