If you're not an artist (or even if you are), choosing website color combinations can be a challenging task. (It was for me. That's why I created ColorCombos.com).
Fortunately, there are a TON of color resources on the web. This lens highlights the best tools out there for selecting, testing and even STEALING (ha!) color combinations.
Color Combination Libraries
- ColorCombos Combo Library (my site)
- Contains a growing library of color combinations. Clicking on a color palette image will take you to the Combo Tester tool, where you can edit that combo.
- COLOURLovers
- Has tons of ranked color combinations, along with highlighted individual colors. It even let's you save your colors.
- AdamPolselli
- Contains a number of extremely helpful design guides, along with color forecasts.
- ColorSchemer Gallery
- An impressive gallery, containing hundreds of user generated color palettes.
Color Combination Builders
- ColorCombos Combo Tester (my site)
- A tool for building and testing color combinations. The tool allows you to edit column colors using the ColourMod tool, move columns around, and grab complimentary colors. It also provides links and images that you can share with your friends and clients.
- Color Schemer Online v2
- A popular online tool used to create harmonious color combinations. Color Schemer also sells an Windows version and provides a free color picker tool called ColorPix.
- Color schemes generator 2
- A popular color scheme generator. Uses a color wheel as a starting point to build palettes.
- ColorBlender
- A website tool for building color palettes. The palettes are created by using RGB sliders. The tool provides exports in Photoshop (.ACT) and Illustrator formats (.EPS) There's also a Save option.
- Behr's ColorSmart
- This tool is actually used for coordinating paints for your walls. It is a Flash based application that builds color palettes. After creating a color palette, you can use one of the Windows based color picker tools (like Pixie) to grab the hex values.
- Color Lab
- This is one of the older color palette builder web applications. It uses the beautifully organized Visibone Webmaster's Pallette. Visibone also sells color reference items, such as charts, laminated cards and even mouse pads. For years I had one of their beautiful posters hanging up in my cube. Very useful.
- ColorToy
- A free Flash based web application that builds color palettes. A fun Toy to play with.
- ColorMatch 5K
- A web based tool that builds a 6 color palette using RGB sliders.
- STEEL DOLPHIN CREATIVE -Color Scheme Tool
- Free tool that uses sliders to create color palettes, starting from a hex color value that you enter. Highly recommended!
Screen Color Pickers
- Pixie by Nattyware (Windows App)
- My favorite color picker. Use this tool to grab color values from the screen.
- Color Schemer ColorPix (Windows App)
- A FREE color picker tool that grabs colors in many formats, including RGB, HEX, HSB, CMYK. It even includes a magnifier tool.
Website and Image Color Grabbers
- I Like Your Colors
- A web based tool used to grab colors from another website. Simply enter a URL and press submit. Then it will grab the colors from that website and build a palette for you.
- Color Palette Generator
- This is a web based tool that creates a Color Palette based on an image. (Hint: Click on the Live Site link at the bottom.) You upload an image to the site and it takes color samples out of sections of the image, then creates a color palette for you.
- degraeve's Color Palette Generator
- This site is very similar to the one listed above with the same name. It analyzes a picture and produces a color palette. Instead of uploading an image though, you point to the URL of the image on the web.
- Grab Website Colors (my site)
- This is the ColorCombos' color grabbing tool. Simply enter a URL then press submit. If colors are found you are taken to the Combo Tester page where you can Edit the newly created palette. The tool even extracts colors from the included CSS files.
- Colr.org
- This site contains tools for grabbing colors from websites AND images.
