Coloring fun for senior citizens - a great craft for the elderly

As the caregiver for my 94 year old Mom, Gertie, I'm always looking for fun crafts to keep us busy and coloring fun for senior citizens was just up our alley. Although her arthritic hands made holding the crayons difficult, I found some thick pencils and crayons to help her with her coloring fun.

We've tried all kinds of senior citizen crafts but coloring is really one of our favorites - maybe we're not so good at it but that's not what matters...it's the wine we sip as we sit and color and chat...

This lens is dedicated to all of the caregivers and their loved ones - it's a difficult yet rewarding path to trod. I'm lucky to be trekking it alongside one of the most wonderful women in the world - my Mama.

Thick crayons help a senior citizen with coloring fun.

Click on any of the below pictures to get more information. I took the thick crayons out of their boxes as didn't like that they were marketed for kids - it's hard enough to be a senior citizen without being compared to a young child.

Get a pretty box or tin. An antique tin, like those shown further below, are really a pretty way to organize thick crayons for coloring fun for senior citizens.

Mandala coloring books for adults

I had no idea what a mandala was until I started this Squidoo lens. So, off to the internet I went to do research (remember when we had to schlep to the library?...). A "Mandala" is a sanscript word that means "circle" so Mandala coloring books are full of...well, circles to color! Loads of fun and a chance to get very creative when coloring with a senior citizen.

Use different media such as coloring pencils, pen and ink, and crayons to get the coolest effect when coloring Mandalas with a senior citizen.

If you can't find a crayon or colored pencil in a thick grip...

...make the grip thicker yourself.

I found these pencil grips at the store one day when I was looking for a solution for my Mom to hold her favorite pen. Getting a new pen was certainly an option but she liked this one. Life has changed enough for her since Dad died and she came to live with me 5 years so, if she wanted that pen, I had to find a way to adapt it.

Enter pencil or pen grips. These are wonderful in that they can be used with any type of writing instruments. The grip makes it much easier for arthritic hands to color or even write.

If you still find that the grips aren't big enough for your senior citizen's hand, try making your own grip by winding some cotton gauze around the pencil and using duct tape to tape it.

Old time coloring fun for senior citizens

If you have a senior citizen you love who is as old as mine (94...almost no one has me beaten in this category...), they might remember old time farms and animals. This great coloring book for senior citizens is a wonderful way to start some conversations you might not have had.

great activity ideas, I think sometimes people don't spend time with their grandparents or parents because of things to do together. Great ideas. If you like to browse lens like I do, mine has a great educational topic with poll questions for my readers to do too!

My aunt, who had Alzheimers also enjoyed coloring. Nice lens to let everyone know.

Great ideas! You can find helpful grips and such in sensory catalogs, usually also marketed toward kids, but helpful for anyone with trouble gripping. Also there are some new "crayons" that are egg-shaped, made for toddlers, but very easy to hold. I've seen them in Walmart. I like particularly what you mentioned about coloring books starting conversations about old times that you might not otherwise have.

Ooh, I think the Old-Fashioned Farm Life coloring book sounds perfect. With my mom, it would have to be hot chocolate instead of wine.
