Coloring Your Hair Bold Colors

Punk, emo or just standing out in a crowd, crazy hair color is fun and easy to do! Here are tips and tricks to getting your hair punked out!

Remember that the more you wash your hair, the faster your bold color will fade. Use a gentle shampoo and don't forget to condition. Blow drying, flat irons and excessive heat will dry out your hair. Bleaching has already weakened it so take good care of your hair so your punk style stays fresh!

Why be normal?

Crazy colors are fun

UPDATE: The bold, scene hair colors that I feature here are not permanent. They will fade a bit every time you wash your hair. They also will drip every time you wash your hair. Afraid of committing to a bold or crazy color? DON"T BE! If you really hate it, wash it a lot to speed up the fading process and then simply put a semi-permanent color over it.

Afraid of hair color? Don't be. Changing your hair color is easy. If your hair is dirty blonde and you want to experience a different look, why not try a semi-permanent color like auburn - (shown). It will wash out and in the meanwhile, you can try out a different look. If you are ready to go wild with your hair color- that is easy too! To get the best results from punk colors, you need to bleach the hair that is going to be colored. You cannot expect to get bright pink hair if your natural hair color is brown. Even someone with blonde hair needs to lighten it to almost platinum in order to achieve the boldest, strongest color.

Too scared to bleach? Try hair extensions. You don't even need to do your whole head to get a cool look. Try just a chunk of your hair. Not a big commitment and it will still look great.

Try hair extensions to add bold color highlights without changing the color of your hair.

See below for more ideas. Emo or punk, red, black, purple, blue, pink, platinum, green - whatever you can imagine, there is color that can make your bold hair statement!

DIY Crazy Hair Color Tips

Guys and girls have been dyeing their hair bold, crazy colors since the seventies. Seen as a form of self-expression, coloring your hair bold colors is fun!

The best way to get the color you are aiming for is to strip your hair down to as close as you can get to platinum. Trying to make your brown hair blue without removing the brown color is not going to work. To get bold color, you need a blank "canvas".

See below on how to strip your hair color.

Tips for using manic panic and other bold hair color brands

1- Protect what you don't want colored. Yes- this means wear vinyl gloves, an old t-shirt and cover the nearby surfaces to protect them from getting dyed also.

2- It can be hard to DIY! Get a friend to help you. Have a hair color party and do each others hair.

3- Heat helps to intensify the boldness of the shade. After applying the hair dye, use a blow dryer to set it. Blow dry for several minutes. Wait at least 30 minutes or more to intensify the effects of the color and then rinse out.

4- Beware! If it is swim season, chlorine may react with your bold color. Rinse after swimming to avoid a strange color reaction. (unless of course you don't mind)

5- The color will fade but not disappear. To get rid of the bold color (although it is faded) you will need to strip your hair again. Frequent use of bleach on hair will damage and dry it. Condition in between coloring in order to keep you hair in its best condition.

Crazy Color

This pink shade was done with a product called "Splat". Available at most chain drugstores, it is runnier than "Manic Panic" products are. It will still give you color but it is a messy process. You must strip your hair down in order to get the desired color and the product does include bleaching compound but if your hair is dark or you are doing your whole head, you need to make a stop at your beauty supply store for extra bleach.

For available shades, check out their website at https://www.splathaircolor.com

This is semi-permanent hair color but although it fades, you will need to dye your hair darker to cover it or strip it in order to go back to your natural hair color.

This pink shade was actually supposed to be bolder but we did not cover the head with a plastic bag (which would have intensified the color) or use a blow dryer while the dye was on. To get a bolder color, use heat.

Is Scene Hair Color Safe?

I mean - Will My Hair Fall Out?

The truth is that yes, your hair could break and you could do some pretty bad damage if you do not take precautions while attempting to get these wild hair colors.

First of all, if your hair is brittle, dry or splitting- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STRIP THE COLOR OUT IN ORDER TO MAKE IT BOLD PINK OR ANY OTHER FUNKY SHADE!!!

Deep condition your hair, trim off the split ends and allow it to get into better condition BEFORE you put it through the stress of stripping the color out. If your hair is naturally blonde and you are not using bleach (for many colors blondes do not NEED to strip the color) only apply color IF YOUR HAIR IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

What do I mean by "good" condition?

It should feel soft to the touch. You shouldn't have split ends. If your hair is split your hair will appear frizzy. Now there is a big difference between having frizzy hair because it is naturally wavy or curly and frizzy because it is split. I think you can tell the difference. If you have used a lot of heat on your hair and failed to ever (or rarely) use conditioner, chances are good that your hair may not be in good shape.

Deep condition using an over-the-counter deep conditioner for dry or damaged hair. Use warmed olive oil and rub it into your hair if you have no conditioner and then after leaving it in for about 15 minutes (wrap your hair in a warm towel) wash the olive oil out. Mayonnaise also makes a good deep conditioner.

Give your hair a week or two and then you can go ahead with the color of your choice. Just remember that bleach can damage your hair. For naturally darker hair, buy a stronger bleach that will work faster instead of the bleach that comes in many scene hair products. Just ask at your local beauty supply shop. Most employees are licensed cosmetologists and they will be happy to give you advice on which products are the best to use.

Once you do your hair, allow it to be that way for a few weeks before you start thinking about stripping it and going for a different look. The people whose hair winds up breaking are the ones who do not respect their hair and abuse it.

Some people with coarser hair can get away with stripping more often- SOMETIMES- there are no firm rules. If your hair is baby-fine, take caution and instead of doing your whole head, do a section.

Can your hair technically "fall out" from stripping and putting these unnatural colors in? Anything is possible but honestly, if you are smart and safe about coloring you should be fine.

Fake it!

Not Just for Teens

When my friend Bernadette saw a rainbow look that Lauren Conrad had done, she wanted it too. Although our results are more drastic than Lauren's, I love it and so does she.

Bernie bought her products at our local Sally's Beauty Supply and in turn I discovered a great new product that is now my favorite for getting bold crazy color!

Bernie's hair is blonde and although I did bleach out some strips, it really was not necessary. This color is so fantastic that it clung to her blonde hair very well. I used two complimentary colors on each strip of hair and unlike other products I have used, this color didn't run or spread.

I wrapped it in foil and left it on for about 20 minutes. I rinsed it out and blow-dried sections at a time because I was not convinced that the colors wouldn't run into each other. WOW. The look is a bit more extreme than originally planned but it looks great!

Washing will make it fade faster as happens with any hair color. I am excited to see how it lasts.

The product we used was "Beyond the Zone" and it costs about $6 a bottle. We used WILD RED,CANDY APPLE RED, PURPLE PASSION, HUCKLEBERRY BLUE, TRIPPED UP TURQUOISE AND NOT SO SHY VIOLET.

Here is the result. Bernie is a professional and she can easily tone down her new look by pulling her hair back, braiding it or twisting it to tone down the colors.

I love the look! I have to say a huge thanks to my friend Bernadette! I love to "play" and this was a lot of fun to do.

Beyond the Zone

Wow. I have tried different bold hair color products but today's experience topped them all. I love this product. I mean I really love it. It costs the same as the others but the quality is so much better. The selection of shades is amazing.

There are only two product colors listed here, let me tell you that they are the best! I like the bottle which has a cap so if you only use a small amount you can use it again without worries of it spilling or not being "fresh". The bleach was not "eye-burning" like some but still did the job.

Manic Panic

Manic Panic is a popular brand of semi-permanent hair dye that is popular with teens and young adults. This is probably the best brand of bold hair color I have used. It comes in several bold shades and if you cannot find the one you want at your local Hot Topic store in the mall, order it directly from their website. They also have other great products on the Manic Panic site.

Blonde Bombshell

Stripping Down Your Hair Color

Going from dyed black hair down to almost platinum takes time and some skill. Although her hair is medium length, it is somewhat thick and it took some time to apply the bleach to the hair. Afterwards, I used a thick conditioner and allowed it to sit before rinsing. Her hair is baby soft and ready for some manic color.

Here is how we stripped this hair and came up with the color as shown. (the light gives the illusion of it not being evenly blonde but it is good enough for what we will be doing next)

While my daughter was changing into an old t-shirt, I prepared the bleach. Using a plastic bowl, I first opened a packet of bleaching powder and put it in the bowl. I slowly added the developer and stirred it until it was a creamy consistency. It should be thick but not so thick that it isn't blended. You are supposed to leave the roots for last because the heat of your scalp will cause the roots to lighten faster. I worked quickly, covering each section using a brush to paint on the bleach. Of course, I wore extra thick hair coloring gloves, bleach will lighten and sometimes burn your skin.

It took about 40 minutes to fully apply the bleach to her entire head ( I finished with the roots). I then took a plastic grocery bag and put it on her head and secured it. The plastic bag helps to keep the heat in which speeds up the process of stripping the hair color. It also keeps any bleach from getting on clothes.

I set the kitchen timer for 25 minutes. We have stripped her hair from black before and I know how long we need to wait before checking it. When the timer went off I removed the bag to check on how well her hair was turning. She was at an orangey stage and at this point, if I was to wash out the bleach, she would have had an uneven rusty orange color. I put the bag back on and set the timer for 20 more minutes.

At the next check time, her hair was showing noticeable signs of lightening to the levels that I desired. Unfortunately, it looked uneven and I decided that to be safe, we would wait 10 minutes, rinse it and then touch up where needed.

Ten minutes later, we rinsed the bleach out using warm water and followed with a quick mild shampoo. I added just enough conditioner so that I could easily separate her hair and rinsed it well. I checked the condition of her hair and it was good. I wasn't happy with the color, there were areas that did not lighten to the platinum blondeness that she wanted. I reapplied bleach and put the bag back on her head. We set the timer for 35 minutes and waited.

Her hair was looking much better after a total of almost 2 hours of bleaching. I decided to give her another 15 minutes and be done with it.

The timer went off and I washed and conditioned her hair. Although I wanted it to air-dry, she was insistent upon blow drying. Normally after bleaching, I prefer to rest the hair. Bleaching is heavy duty and could be drying and damaging. She has been lucky but why push your luck? She blowed dried (against my better judgment) and all was well.

Being cautious, I told her the manic color that she wants to do on half of her hair will wait a week. Give her hair time to have a couple of conditioning treatments and be in good condition for the extreme color that she wants next is the smart thing to do. I couldn't imagine what would happen if all her hair was to fall out. I imagine she would not want to go to school.

Caring for your color-treated hair

Frequent coloring can dry out your hair. When you bleach your hair, this also weakens it. If you want to keep your hair soft and well-conditioned, you need to take a look at the products you are using to care for your hair.

If you flat iron your bold-colored hair, you definitely should be using some products to protect your hair from heat damage. The next time you decide to strip your hair to try out a new look you will be happy that you took the time to use moisturizing products on your hair.

Shampoo and conditioner that is made for color-treated hair will help to extend the color. Products that are moisturizing are also good to use. If you want to have the punk look, you need to make sure you have hair to color. Buying products for colored treated hair will help you keep your crazy colored hair in good shape.

Not Just for Teens

Right around New Year's I decided that I needed a change. My hair is naturally dark brown and through the years I have experimented myself. I decided to go crazy and stripped my hair. Yup I went blonde. I lasted about 7 weeks and got bored. Yes I found being blonde not all that exciting. So I took a trip to my local beauty supply store to see what color to go to next. Having a blank canvas to work on was fun- I knew the color I chose would be bold.

Here it is. Instead of leaning towards a more normal and boring brown, I chose Garnier Nutrisse Burgundy. It looks purple in the sunlight and dark in regular light with purple highlights. For now, I am loving it! The model in the lens is my youngest daughter but for a change I am getting in on the action. Here I am with my new haircolor!

Multi color look

Jet black underneath and platinum with a pink middle, this hair style was easy to do. The model's hair was dirty blonde and half the head was stripped down with bleach. The top was tied up and kept away from the bottom layer that was painted with jet black hair dye. After 20 minutes the black was rinsed out. Pink was applied and wrapped in aluminum foil so the platinum wouldn't get messed up.

It is hard to do this kind of detail on your own head. It is easier to have someone do your hair for you. There was no need to strip the entire head when doing half of the head black. Black easily covers over brown. I did the bleaching first, just in case any got on the section that was going to be black. It is easier this way. Remember when you use bleach to protect not just your skin but the facial skin of the person whose hair is getting bleached. Bleach will burn your skin. It may even small white spots if it isn't wiped off the skin quickly. You can use vaseline with cotton strips to protect the hairline in order to keep bleach or color from getting on the skin.

Keeping It Soft

Products for Extreme Coloring

To keep your extreme bold colors looking great, you will need to take extra good care of your hair. Using these products for color-treated hair will help. Some people suggest washing your hair less often and sometimes you can get away with that but often if your hair is oily you cannot do that. Because of the bleaching process your hair is compromised and may be drier. Deep conditioning products are great for fixing your hair. If you need to feel like you washed your hair without actually washing it, try the no-shampoo methods here.
