Coloring books can be a valuable source when used as an educational tool for the child at home. There are also many adults who still enjoy creating art both online and offline with coloring books.

For some, collecting is not only a passion, but find that coloring in and of itself is a relaxing, entertaining hobby. For others, it is a source of controversy and artistic expression.

This is a little online coloring book to help you find news and information about some of the most interesting coloring page online.

Whitman Coloring Books

Some of the most educational coloring books were Whitman Coloring Books. Whitman Publishing was based in Chicago in the early 1900s, and was purchased by Western Publishing Company (Golden Books) in 1915, and was one of the largest publishers of children and family books in the country. By the late 1960s, Whitman coloring books were no longer published. Below are some examples of Whitman Coloring Books on eBay.

Color By Number Coloring Books

Some color books designed with a 'color by number' system. Although the 'color by number' book is a simple means of introducing art to a child, it is a far more valuable learning tool than that when used as an introduction to basic mathematics. When introduced to a color by number coloring book at a very early age, children begin to learn how to read numbers, and how numbers can be used to solve problems.

The Whitman Color by Number Coloring Book shown above is No. 1655-22 "Wild Animals Paint By Number Pictures from 1967, Drawings by Bob Jenny. On the back of the book, a color code was provided with instructions on how to match the colors with the numbers. Although Whitman also manufactured crayons that were numbered in sync with their coloring books, instructions were provided for how to coordinate colors that were not 'Whitman-coded.')

This particular paint-by-number book was designed to be colored with chalk, water colors, crayons, colored pencils, or poster paint. This coloring book presented two versions of the same drawing - one drawing was provided numbered, and the other drawing was provided unnumbered.

Coloring Books As Learning Tools

Original Art - Geranium Color Page

Coloring books are a form of educational interactive art. Coloring books can depict the simplest elements of a line drawing, to the most complex pose of an animal.

The importance of developing an attention span while building confidence, self esteem, are lessons that can last a lifetime. Patience, understanding, correcting mistakes, and autonomy are all part of the coloring book process.

No matter if one is young or old, when one completes a coloring book from start to finish, the reward of accomplishment is the end result.

Educational Coloring Books

"Coloring books are also said to help to motivate students' understanding of concepts that they would otherwise be uninterested in. Since the 1980s, several publishers have also produced educational coloring books intended for studying graduate-level topics such as anatomy and physiology, where color-coding of many detailed diagrams are used as a learning aid. There is also a reputedly excellent textbook on the Fortran programming language, called A Fortran Coloring Book,[5] that is presented as a tongue-in-cheek coloring book." -- Wiipedia

Coloring Book Pencils, Pens, and Crayons

At the age of two, when a crayon was placed in my hand, it opened up an entire new world for me. I learned how to place colors within the lines of a drawing, and the value of coloring outside the lines. From that point, I became intrigued with color application, how lines were turned into pictures, how borders framed a page. I learned about time, composition, and the story that was happening by how one finished hand colored page led into another. I learned to focus on my work. When the whole coloring book was complete, a story was told, the black and white lined book was now in full color.
