Color Theory Project for Elementary Teachers
Color is broken up into terms along the color wheel.
There are three primary colors: red - blue - yellow
There are three secondary colors: purple - orange - green
When you mix two primary colors together you create a secondary color.
red blue = purple
red yellow = orange
yellow blue = green
The last term for colors on the color wheel is tertiary color.
These colors are obtained by mixing two secondary colors OR a primary color plus a secondary color, which is adjacent to the primary color.

Found Objects & Recyclables as Art
There were three 4th grade classrooms. Each room was assigned one of the color terms: Primary - Secondary - Tertiary
1. A box was place in each classroom and the children had two weeks to gather found objects in their specific color groups and place the objects in their classroom box. No specifics other than sticking to your color. Contributions could be made to each others collection but the colors had to be sorted properly.
2. An afternoon was scheduled then for art day. Members of an art guild came to help out and interact with the children as we explored creativity.
The children picked objects of their color group only from the box and had to create something from the objects. Everyone was free to create whatever but the object had to be able to hang.
The guild supplied lots of tacky glue, since we wanted to be quick and safe from hot glue guns. We had a large group of children.
We also had an extra amount of yarn and ribbon plus some paper clips and hole punches so the children could make hanging objects.
In advance, I had my husband construct a huge wooden 3 tier mobile to hang all the objects from for display in the school library.
3. When all the objects were complete they were placed on the shelves and around the room to dry overnight.
4. The following day; my husband and I, hung the objects onto the mobile while the children came in and out of the library. There were lots of questions and many opinions regarding the objects and the mobile.
All Primary Color objects were tied to the top.
Secondary Color objects came next.
And teritiary color objects hung on the bottom.
There were a few objects that were so creative and large that they were displayed on the top of the book shelves and under the mobile.
Color was a discussion and a lot of fun not only for the children who created the color mobile but for the ones who came to the library too.
A scavenger hunt that was creative and educational.
And the Art Guild members had a wonderful day!
