Rhodes Greece
At the southeastern edge of the Aegean Sea, at a distance of less than 20 kilometers from the shores of Asia Minor lies the island of the sun and the sea. The jewel of Greek tourism and the idyllic island of the Mediterranean, Rhodes has become the world's beloved island.
Drenched in the sunlight of its patron god, the god of the sun, and garbed in glittering emerald green, the island rises from the misty foam of the lapping waves. This is fabulous Rhodes!

The Colossus of Rhodes
wonder of the ancient world
The Colossus of Rhodes Greece was a huge statue of the Greek god Helios which was built by the Rhodians between 292 and 280 BC. It is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. If you see Pictures of Colossus, the statue was 30 meters meaning one of the tallest statues of the ancient world but unfortunately it was destructed. The task of building the huge sculpture was assigned to the sculptor Chares of Lindos and it took him 12 years to finish it.
The Colossus of Rhodes was a symbol of unity for the Rhodians. Its base was made of white marble and the outside was made of bronze. To reach the higher parts a ramp was built around the statue which was removed after the end of the construction.
During a strong earthquake in 226 BC the Colossus' knee broke but an oracle forbade its re-erection so the statue stood broken for a millennium till it was finally disassembled and sold.
