Wow! Loads of information in your lens. It deserves a purple star in my opinion. Thanks for the great quality info.
  • makingamark Mar 31, 2012 @ 9:23 pm | delete
Good judgement - it actually won a purple star some time ago! :)

Great lens, lots of details. Thanks, for all the information.
  • jimmyworldstar Feb 3, 2012 @ 1:57 pm | delete
What a detailed lens, I'm not a big fan of colored pencils since I find them to be less artistic and have lower quality, but I'm sure there's some good brands out there.
  • makingamark Mar 31, 2012 @ 9:24 pm | delete
I think maybe you've not been trying the good brands. They are in a different league to pencils which are more commonly available. Not cheap but worth it!

Holy cow, this is quite an extensive lens. I think I learned more from reading this than I have actually using colored pencils semi-professionally over the past ten years. Thanks for sharing this fantastic lens.

Wow, what a thorough and enjoyable lens. I'm a member of CPSA in Washington, DC even though colored pencil isn't my primary medium. I'm a pastel gal but love all of the information. Maybe I missed it since there is so much info here but do you know about 500 colors the subscription colored pencil project from Japan. Very fun idea.
  • makingamark Nov 6, 2010 @ 7:20 pm | delete
I have - but it seems like such a complete rip-off hence I won't include it on this lens.

Why would anybody possibly want to pay £342 / US$443 / 36,000Yen for a set of 500 coloured pencils of unknown lightfastness quality - which they can never ever replace as none are for sale from open stock?

It seems to me they are made for display only - and that's a decorative matter.
  • Illustrator's Place Oct 24, 2010 @ 11:06 am | delete
Absolutely fantastic Lense, packed with useful information. Not one bit of space wasted. A credit to all involved. Thank you www.illustratorsplace.com

What a total guide you've provided, I learned a great deal about this medium and would like to try using coloured pencils on an art project in the future. I'll be back to read more soon.
  • mukunda22 Oct 23, 2010 @ 9:45 am | delete
A comprehensive look at colored pencils, indeed!! I may get somejust for journal musings!
  • waynet Oct 20, 2010 @ 5:01 pm | delete
Coloured pencils are definitely my art medium, I prefer the Prismacolor and even the classic budget Crayola coloured pencils for colouring my art.

Superb lens on all things coloured pencil!

You are definitely a font of information on all things art! Whenever I'm trying to make a decision on what to buy, I will definitely check out your suggestions first. Thanks for all the work you put into these lenses!

I'm not much of a serious artist but I'm a huge fan of prisamacolor, but than again I had never even heard of a few of the other brands mentioned in this lens, thank you for the informative lens.
  • Pamela Ericson Jul 6, 2010 @ 8:16 am | delete
This is more a question...I don't like working with Prismacolors...they bloom and breakage is constant...is there a chart somewhere that would give similar colors. For examle,Tuscan Red in Prisma would be similar this color in Lyra Rembrandt or in Faber Castel ... all the books teach in Prisma and I would like to know which colors to choose from my Lyra or Faber Castel......please email ...phe57@mac.com........7/2010 . Thank you.
  • makingamark Jul 6, 2010 @ 7:25 pm | delete
In terms of pre-printed charts, no there is no chart that I am aware of. However Bob Ebdon, the founder of the UK Coloured Pencil Society, did do an exercise where he completed charts of colours trying to match colours to the old Karisma pencils. The brands he used are Derwent Coloursoft, Derwent Artist, Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache Supracolour, Lyra Polycolor and Staedtler Karat Aquarelle.

If you read this post http://ukcps.blogspot.com/2008/01/new-year-new-opportunities.html you can identify how to get hold of the charts. I think these charts will probably provide what you want.

I am amazed at how thorough this lens is - it is like a library. I went through lots of frustration months ago, when I realized that much of the ACEO work I had been doing was with Prismacolor pencils which were not lightfast. I appreciate the way Fabercastel, rates their pencils so you know what youre dealing with, so have switched to that brand mostly.. And am disillusioned with Prismacolor for skirting the issue (I know they have a lightfast set, but its very limited)

Thanks for such a wonderful colored pencil resource.

If anyone wants to find relevant information about coloured pencils, then this is it, lots of links, lots of resources, have fun everyone!!
  • makingamark Jun 17, 2008 @ 12:15 pm | delete
Guy - I checked your site and couldn't find any reference at all to either Prismacolor or Verithin pencils under 'pencils' - although I could spot the Col-Erase. So your claim to being "the only UK stockist of Prismacolor pencils" is downright odd.
    - If you've got the Prismacolor and then Verithin pencils on another part of the website maybe you should list them under pencils?
    - If you're not stocking them at all, you might want to think about people checking your claims before leaving a comment.

Suppliers - please note - I ALWAYS try and check any claims which are made for a supplier.
  • Guy Jun 17, 2008 @ 6:56 am | delete
Can I add my company www.paperpeople.co.uk 01363 85050 we are currently the only UK stockist of Primacolor Pencils as well as Col-Erase, Derwent, Berol Verithin and much more.

    Interesting lens. Nice info.

My favorite colored pencils are by Berol Prismacolor. They develop a kind of waxy finish when you apply the pencil heavily. The colors become very saturated. Then you can use a desk brush to make the waxy finish shine. It's also fun to use them for shading.
  • Aika Dec 14, 2007 @ 10:18 am | delete
My favorite coloured pencil is Faber-Castell, which was given by my Dad when I was in high school. I love to draw and paint, its one of my hobby. ^_^
