Combating Shyness is not easy but simple steps can acheive a blossoming confidence.
One of the biggest handicaps that can plague a young life is that of shyness. Whilst, over time and with maturity, shyness in an individual may diminish, however in many cases it can last throughout a lifetime.Interaction between one's peers is affected and the desire to avoid situations that bring on feelings of nervousness and apprehension may, overtime hinder that person's development and his/her career prospects. Combating shyness is not an easy undertaking. It is essential that an insight into the cause of the trait is examined and understood before help can be given. Lack of confidence, nervousness and fear are deep seated emotions, that are not totally understood. Some experts maintain that it is the social environmental situation that the person has been surrounded with that has caused these emotions to surface, whilst others offer the view that in part shyness is a genetic trait.
Whatever the causes combating shyness should be tackled with much sensitivity.
Sometimes situations occur where a shy person, in company, may over compensate in his/her actions, in an effort to appear "normal" and in so doing draw attention to their bizarre behaviour. The result could be devastating for that person whose efforts to combat shyness has only perpetuated it. Feelings of low esteem, self- loathing and inferiority may result and a mild form of shyness might turn into a full blown anxiety phobia.
There are many self help books available that may help in unwinding and combating shyness. Once an insight as to the possible causes are explained and understood then a process of building up self confidence can be taught either by joining a self confidence course, reading books or listening to tapes.
Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques may be learnt so that rising levels of shyness/ panic may be defused.
Avoid the self critical view that you have of yourself and start to understand that you are not alone suffering shyness. It is estimated that 50% of adults have suffered or are suffering from the condition.
