Tamworth, NSW, Country Music Capital of Australia

Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia is known as the Country Music Capital of Australia and also the City of Lights (first town in Australia to have electric street lighting).
But don't let the Country Music bit put you off. While there are shows all year round from Country Music Artists, it is really only January/February that it really kicks off, when Tamworth hosts it's own Country Music Festival
Tamworth is located in the east of Australia, midway between Sydney in the south and Brisbane to the north

How to get to Tamworth

Travel options

Other than a long walk from pretty much anywhere, here are your options on how to get to Tamworth.
  • F-15 Strike Eagle print Plane - Tamworth can be reached by plane with daily flights from Sydney or Brisbane. The Airport is only 5kms out of town and is an easy drive straight into the CBD. Avis Car Rentals operate out of Tamworth Airport and there is a regular taxi service
  • Tamworth Train Station Train. A regular daily service comes in from Sydney, and stops at most stations on the route up. The train leaves at around 11am from Tamworth to Sydney and vice versa and is normally a six hour trip. But it's nice trip with plenty of scenery and some interesting towns. The Buffet Car can be a bit pricey, so it's a good idea to bring your own lunch and drinks
  • Modified Street Car - Chrysler printCar. The New England Highway runs north from Sydney to Tamworth and is Highway 1 from Sydney towards Newcastle and then Highway 15 from here to Tamworth. Coming from the north to south you would use Highway 15 again that will bring you straight into Tamworth

What to do and see in Tamworth

Here are a few things you should see IN Tamworth

  • Fountain in the Park printBicentennial Park. The central park in Tamworth, right next to the CBD. There are 2 big ponds, a fountain, a stage for concerts, and a couple of memorials. Plus lots of room and some climbing equipment for the kids to run and play around. Also located close to the Peel River, which runs through the town.
  • Kangaroo print Marsupial Park / Endeavor Park / Oxley Lookout. The lookout is exactly what it says. Located close to the Marsupial Park on the north side of Tamworth, it gives an awesome view of the town. The Marsupial Park/ Endeavor Park, has a children's play area, outdoor eating area, BBQs , nature walks, a bird aviary, and stay til around 4pm and you can get up close to the wild kangaroos that come down from the hills to feed
  • Playing the guitar printBig Golden Guitar Tourist Center. For all you country music and Tamworth Souvenirs, plus a wax works of country music stars. A must visit for any country music fan. Also get your photo taken with the big golden guitar!!

There are many more attractions in and around Tamworth, but these seem to be the most popular and most "must-see" areas to visit
  • Koala Bear print Gunnedah Visit Waterways Wildlife Park and see emu's kangaroos and the famous koalas. Gunnedah is known as the Koala Capital of Australia and if you are lucky you might run into some of the ones that roam wild around the town. Also the home town of model Miranda Kerr, now married to actor Orlando Bloom. You might just catch them on a visit home!!
  • Go to Mount Misery Gold Mine Nundle. A small sleepy, country town. Why not visit the Mount Misery Gold Mine or Nundle Woollen Mill
  • Chaffey Dam for fishing, boating and swimming
  • Lake Keepit for fishing, water sports and swimming. Also has cabins for hire on a weekly or nightly basis

Stay at the Paradise Tourist Park that is situated along the Peel River in Tamworth.

It has some wonderful cabins, caravan hard standings and camping facilities. All caravan places have electric. The is also a laundry, pool and small shop.

The park itself is located only a five minute walk into town
