Ranked #263 in Volunteering, #48,091 overall

In spring of 2006, my partner and I came up with the wild idea to raise money for African charities using Comfort Dolls and the generosity of well-known musicians and bands.

A comfort doll is a small knitted doll that Icross Canada uses instead of packing foam when they send shipments of HIV/Aids meds to African clinics. Once the meds are unpacked, the dolls are given to the local children, many of whom are also patients. Many of the children are buried with their comfort dolls when they pass away.

Our project is simple. We write letters to bands and musicians and ask them to pose for a photo holding a comfort doll, have them autograph an index card, and then auction both card and photo and send the proceeds to African charities we support - World Vision and Icross Canada.

Since its inception in early 2006 and we've had some wonderful musicians participate so far:

*Tom Cochrane
*Jann Arden
*Collective Soul
*Paul Rodgers
*Sam Roberts
*Daniel Lanois -musician and producer for U2
*State of Shock
*Seether
*Theory of a Deadman
*Aaron Pritchett
*Kim Mitchell (might as well go for a soda)
*Tragically Hip
*54-40
*Johnny Reid
*Weird Al Yankovic
*Pete Levin
*Jerry Marotta (drummer, singer, producer of tv/movie soundtracks)
*Jimmy Eppard
*Don Schiff
*Why the band
*Roger Hodgson (Supertramp)
*Blue October
*Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols
*Single Car Garage
*The Real Matt Jones
*Us4//U2 (U2 tribute band)
*hip hop artist Massari
*Rocko and the Devils
*A Sheep at the Wheel
*Tom Griesgraber
*Bert Lams
*Third Day
*Caedmon's Call
* and many other local bands

Why We're on Squidoo

Comfort Doll project has a website (which we're still working on), and we have a Myspace (where we're making most of our contacts with the great musicians/bands - turn your speakers down abit first lol) but Squidoo is a great place as well... and can help us increase awareness of our project and of extreme poverty in Africa and ways to get involved in being part of the solution. Come visit My other Squidoo lens for ideas on how to help in small ways. If you're a knitter (or crochet) come visit my Knitting/Crochet Squidoo for a pattern to knit Comfort Dolls for the Kids (as well as where to send them)

Who we do this for

No matter how caught up i get in writing letters to bands and their managers for photo ops, no matter how frustrated i get when i dont hear back, or i get a 'no' answer, no matter how many dolls i knit that look goofy to me - I always keep in mind who my partner and I, who these bands, who my friends who knit furiously after dinner each night - who we are doing this for in the end.

*it has become necessary to ask this.. if you choose to copy and paste the two photos below into your own blog, for whatever reason, please be sure to credit them to William Willabond from ICross Canada. He graciously gave me permission to use them, and I've recently seen them popping up on other sites, which are NOT promoting this idea for the African kids, but personal businesses. sigh. If you are promoting any sort of comfort doll for African children, please feel free to use them, but as they arent mine, please credit. Thanks

AUCTION RESULTS

We've had 10 auctions so far:
  • Our most recent auction just ended and the results were mind numbing. Seether, a band from South Africa and LA, were featured and the auction raised just over $300.00. Seether's fans (urged on singlehandedly by fan Leigh), donated an additional $400+ dollars for a grand total of $715.00!

the money went for the following items (its mind boggling)

$100 - to fund a medical clinic with all supplies for a year
$100 - to buy a bike and repair kit (bike is how dr's get around to visit their patients)
    $75 + $75 - hot lunches for 50 kids for a month (so 100 kids total)
    $30 + $30 - 2 lots of Vitamin A to prevent blindness - 12 children treated in total
$30 + $30 - 2 lots of 2 beds nets each lot - will protect up to 16 children in total
$30 + $30 - 2 lots of antibiotics to treat up to 20 children in total
$30 - 3 soccer balls for kids to play
$35 - 3 school uniforms for 3 children to be able to attend school
$55 - for 2 hens and 1 rooster which can produce up to 120 eggs a year
$50 - furnishes a school room for a year with paper, pencils and other needed items
$15 - provides enough fortified flour for one year to a family
I was able to use every last penny donated. Thank you so much to Seether - Shaun Morgan, John Humphrey, Dale and Troy, and to all the Seether fans who made this the most successful, biggest auction to date! You helped push the Comfort Doll Project over the $2000.00 dollar mark for donations to African charities
  • Our 9th auction was August 2008, and featured Kim Mitchell, Weird Al Yankovic and rock band Theory of a Deadman. We raised $105.00 for World Vision which enabled us to feed lunch to 50 school children for a month ($75.00) and provide antibiotics to 10 children ($30.00)

Thanks so much to those who participated, their managers for the promo! and tbose who helped by spreading the word on message boards, fan forums, and such.. as well as those bidding.

  • Our 8th auction ran June 2008. It featured Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols, 54*40 and Single Car Garage, and together raised $70.00 which we used to purchase two items through the World Vision Gift catalogue - 3 Agricultural Kits (local seeds, tools and training) to help 3 families feed themselves, and 3 School Uniforms to ensure 3 children can go to school.

  • Our seventh auction was May 2008. Singer Matt Jones felt so compelled to 'do' something to help the victims of the Myanmar Burma Cyclone, that he helped our project by doing a photo with us. We raised $43.00 for World Vision, specific to the Myanmar Relief fund.

  • Our sixth auction was held Mid March 2008 and featured autographed photos of Collective Soul, and Tragically Hip. We raised $220.00 and were able to provide World Vision with funds for the following:
-supplies needed to keep a school classroom running for the entire year
-3 soccer balls (kids typically use balled up plastic bags!)
-2 rabbits to provide a family with a small business and a source of protein
-4 mosquito nets - each net can protect up to 4 kids against malaria
-Vitamin A to prevent blindess for 10 kids
    -antibiotics for 6 kids
-fortified flour for a family for an entire year

A huge thank you to the band, their management, and the fans who helped by blogging about our auction, and to those who bid on the photo as well.

  • Our fifth auction was held mid January, 2008 and featured the band Blue October (photos and autographed drum sticks). We were able to raise $75.00 which we sent to ICross Canada (the charity who uses these comfort dolls as packing foam). The money will go a long way to helping them continue to send shipments of HIV meds and used medical equipment to African Clinics.

  • Our fourth auction was held mid-November 2007 and we raised a staggering $500.00 for World Vision. The money raised has been used to 'purchase' items from World Vision's Christmas Gift Catalogue, and includes:
-4 kits to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV during childbirth
-8 bed nets which will protect up to 32 children from Malaria
-3 sets of Vitamin A therapy to prevent blindess in 18 children

The $500 dollars raised will protect up to 54 children from basic treatable preventable diseases. Thats a huge bang for your buck!

Participating in this auction were Canadian musician and U2 producer Daniel Lanois, Canadian Juno award winner rocker Tom Cochrane, and Jimmy Eppard, a guitarist known for his work with many popular bands in and around New York. We also auctioned off 4 dolls that were knitted to loosely resemble the guys from U2.

  • Our third auction was held in May 2007 and we raised $140.00 for U2's The Edge's charity of choice - Music Rising (helping New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina).

Participants include: Rocko Reedy from Rocko and the Devils, and local band A Sheep at the Wheel.

  • Our second auction was held October 2006 and $80.00 was raised for World Vision.

Participants included: drummer Jerry Marotta, Jazz musician Pete Levin, and Star Trek Deep Space Nine actor Alexander Siddig.

  • Our first auction in September 2006, raised $86.00 for Save the Children fund. Participants include: Bert Lams, Tom Griesgraber, Hip Hop artist Massari, and Roger HodgsonM/b> from Supertramp.
