Comic Convention Limited Edition Toys

Each year, toy companies create exclusive collectors items for customers who attend the San Diego Comic-Con and other large comic book conventions.

Super Freddy Pop! #6

Within hours, the first of these highly desirable items are posted on Amazon and eBay. This is your chance to buy limited-edition toys before someone else adds them to their collection.

Funko Freddy is the mascot of FunKo, the makers of Wacky Wobbler bobble-heads and dozens of other collectable toys. He makes an appearance at every Comic-Con in San Diego, and other toy conventions, to spread the word about these fantastic vinyl toys from Funko. Freddie has a different costume every time that's similar to one of their new toys introduced at the Comic-Con.

Where to buy SDCC exclusive toys

Limited-edition Comic-Con exclusive toys show up on Amazon after the convention in July, but online auction sites and fan clubs are the best place to find these scarce collectors items.

Look for the round sticker in the bottom right corner of the box to see how many figures were produced, the year and convention where the toys premiered.

Toy collecting glossary

List of designer toy terminology

Every hobby or special profession has a unique language and toy collecting is no exception. These are some of the terms you will see when visiting online bulletin boards and toys conventions.
  1. Chase: The chase is on to find these exclusive "Chase" figures. These are different from the standard toys that are produced in large batches of 10,000 units or more. Chase figures are made in small quantities and with different materials or colors. Learn about scarce collectors items with the toy collecting glossary.
  2. Crystal: Clear plastic resin is used instead of vinyl to produce a stationary toy figure. The transparent resin can be painted but the whole point is to see through crystal figures.
  3. Flocked: Originally used to describe fabric with a raised texture, flocking plastic creates the same kind of fuzzy carpet texture on the surface of the vinyl.
  4. GITD or Glow: Glow in the Dark
  5. Holographic: Type of material that creates a rainbow starburst effect in the light.
  6. "In the wild": This is where you will find Chase figures. Looking in small, neighborhood toy stores and novelty shops at the Mall.
  7. Metallic: Colored vinyl is used ithat looks like bronze or silver and gol
  8. Proto: Prototypes are made before a larger batch of toys goes into production. Protos are unpainted, most of the time and they might experiment with different colored vinyl material.
  9. Retired: They "broke the mold" after making a big batch of toys with no chance of doing another production run. Once a figure is retired, the supply is limited and the value goes up.
  10. TRU = Toy's 'R Us

Medicom toys

Medicom is a Japanese toy maker that has been creating action figure toys since 2000 when their brand of "kubricks" were first released. These action figures are simplified human forms with several points of movement at the joints. Kubricks were, in fact, named for Stanley Kubrick and the product was developed with a former employee of the Lego company to fit the scale of buildings and play sets created with Lego bricks.

Love Batman and the Simpson toys. Just saw some figures that look like these at Blockbuster. They are vintage figures of the Rudolph characters. Interesting topic. Nice job.

Kind of funny but a number of dealers at the New York Comic Con a few months later were touting the San Diego ''exclusive'' toys for sale! Nice lens!

Comic books are a love of mine but I haven't been to a convention in awhile. I'd like to get some superhero figurines, is there a website which specializes in them?
