The Comic Book Nook

Ranked #18,531 in Arts & Design, #404,577 overall

I read really fast, and I read a lot of different kinds of media. And in my media mix is are comic books -- still. I've read comic books as long as I've been able to read. Many of my friends either write, draw, or publishe comics. So what do I read? Mostly independents, alternatives, and self-published comics.

A Publisher I Love

In today's mail, I received a care package from the fine folks at Top Shelf Productions, one of my favorite independent publishers -- and one of the most interesting and important comics makers today.

Among the titles included are:

Relevant Magazines

Periodicals about periodicals

If you read the following magazines, you'll know most of what's going on in the industry
The Comics Journal
The best of the lot, smart writing about smart comics for smart people
Comics Buyer's Guide
I'm not as big a fan since the format change and redesign, but CBG's news and reviews are worthwhile, as is Heidi MacDonald's column
The Comics Interpreter
Robert Young's self-published magazine ranges slightly further afield than even the Journal
Comics & Games Retailer
Krause Publications' magazine for store owners. Occasionally interesting
Wizard
Only if you must, fan boy
Comic Book Heaven
The blog corollary to Scott Saavedra's wonderful fanzine, which is a must read

I also like comics very much just as I like to get Viagra on the Internet. Thanks for sharing this interesting lens with us. Generic Viagra Viagra Online

It's great to see more lenses about comic books. I have one among my lenses and it's about the Justice Society of America.

Some Caution Helps When Selling Fantasies

Superheros

The Nov. 16 edition of the New York Times included a special section on small business -- which included an article on comic books. The piece nods to new comics day -- Wednesday! -- considers the growth of the inudustry, and takes a look at Midtown Comics as a case study. Nice to see!

Comic Book Blogs and Columns

More frequent news and notes

I don't actually keep up with a lot of comics blogs and columns, but these look pretty rad
Dave's Long Box
"I'm going to review my comic book collection and you're going to like it."
Oddball Comics
Scott Shaw's column on the craziest comic books ever published
Progressive Ruin

Stores I Adore

Shops to drop bank at

I don't frequent a comic shop every week like I used to, but I still have my favorite retailers
Million Year Picnic
Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this is the best comic book store in the whole entire world.
Midtown Comics
When I used to work near Grand Central, this was the topic I'd occasionally visit. Tons of graphic novels
Quimby's
Comics, zines, esoteric books, and other ephemera
Larry's Comic Book Store
Opened in 1972, this shop might very well be closed now. Located near Loyola University, I'd go here for the clutter of dusty long boxes and early '90s alternative comics like Yummy Fur
Roger's Time Machine
The best back issue store I've ever gone to
Capital City Comics
The shop I frequented when I was growing up in Wisconsin

Mail Order Must Haves

The best non-comic shop sources for comics

While I encourage you to support a local retailer, this mail-order option is quite impressive
Westfield Comics
New issue subscriptions and back issues

Storage Supplies and Tools

Boxes and bags

I'm no collector nut, but at least put them in a long box.
Bags Unlimited
Collection protection center since 1975
ComicBase
A database to keep track of your comics. Packed with information on over a quarter of a million comics
BCW Supplies
Protectice collecting supplies
