Example of a Healthy Daily routine

The benefits of following a daily routine are manifold, any routine that is adhered to instills stability and calmness and reliability within your life. The subtler aspects of mind and body are nurtured by this reliability. Harmony in your life ensues and harmony creates a calm mind and a healthy body

What should a daily routine in harmony with Ayurveda be? Well luckily this is well documented in ayurveda and is called Dinacharya. Here's the basic formula!

Wake up with or just before sunrise

Waking up to health

Remember the old adage, "early to bed early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise" this benefits longevity through helping you sleep better.

Sleep is the mother of all healing as you already know.

Drink a good amount of water upon waking

To combat dehydration from the night and help flush the toxins from the system

Around 1-3 glasses are recommended depending if you have the tendancy to have constipation or not- If constipation is something that afflicts you drink a lot more water at least 2 glasses upon waking, as it is due to having a chronically dry colon that many people have constipation.

Perform morning ablutions

Go to the toilet to empty the body of food and toxins before you put more undigested food in

This helps get rid of the toxic load in your body. If you battle to go to the toilet it is advisable to take triphala in the evening or upon waking, this will gently assist you in going to the toilet without any side effect or dependency whilst nourishing your whole system. Triphala is, in fact, a rasayana (longevity tonic) Triphala is a powder made from 3 fruit and should be available at most good health stores if you cannot get that then soak some raisins and dried figs in water overnight and eat it in the morning(and drink the water)

Failure to eliminate and then eating again leads to toxins going into the organs and causing most of the common chronic diseases.

Clean the tongue

Using either a tongue scraper or a spoon. This serves 2 purposes, first, it detoxifies your system of the "fur" which accumulates overnight and second, the tongue is like the foot in reflexology where every organ in the body is represented by certain points (acupressure points). Scraping the tongue is giving your internal organs a quick "balancing tune up or tonic".

Take a Bath and oil the body

This is very good practice for longevity. Oiling the body assists it in lymph drainage and circulation of the plasma. A dual detox and nutritive effect it also keeps you from getting wrinkles and slows aging significantly. A good oil is Sesame for all constitutions but especially good for anti aging and Vata; Pitta constitution may prefer sunflower oil while Kapha may prefer corn oil. Other benefits from oiling the body are because, in essence, it's an opportunity to connect with the body and appreciate it. Enjoy!

Exercise.

In the early morning is the best time to exercise as it is the time when Kapha is dominant. A 30 minute walk is very good and/or do yoga poses or tai chi/qigong all of these activities benefit your health and longevity, lower your stress and have many health benefits.
