Community: The Best Show With the Most Ridiculous Premise

Ranked #28,020 in Entertainment, #347,204 overall

And That Is Just One of the Great Things About This Show.

I fact, that is the bases for making it all great!

Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) is a high powered corporate attorney, who was disbarred when a rival informed the state bar that his undergrad degree was from Columbia and not Columbia. When a rival colleague discovers this, he reports him to the bar and he has to return to junior college. Here he joins a study groups consisting of various losers and is at odds with them and a geekier fellow student who is kept out of the group and the head of the college who has it in for Jeff.

1. He graduated law school, no one cares about under grad, he went to law school and passed the bar

2. If he had had to go back it would not have been to some community college and he would not have had to join some 'study group' just to get through. This is a high powered attorney, after all.

3. He certainly could have gotten through in far less than the ten years (I hope) that it will take him on the show.

However, in the meantime we all benefit from the laughs ensuing from the 'hijinx'. Its silly, silly, silly and I love it.

Jeff Winger: Disgraced Shark Attorney

First let me say that Joel McHale is gorgeous. I mean really. So I used this picture where he isn't. It keeps the fantasies down.

Before Community he hosted the Friday night 'E' show that ridicules reality TV. He takes a 'no prisoners', 'no holds barred' approach and the show is often in very poor taste, as is much of reality TV. It is certainly one of my guilty pleasures. I have often thought that if he weren't so charming I would be repulsed. I just wish he would leave my beloved DWTS alone! Oh, well.

He is also a stand up comic, who still performs. The father of 2, still married, he was a classically trained actor. The son of an American college professor in Italy, he got a masters in acting before going after his career. No wonder he has so much contempt for reality 'stars'!

Jeff Winger

" She's a stripper. Life sued her and she lost."

Joel McHale and The Soup

Joel McHale is the only guy who could get away with being so snarky and still be likable.

Of course, he is so good looking and charming that he could probably get away with anything. (Danger, Danger Willa Robinson)

And of course, the targets of his humor usually deserve it. This video is a perfect case in point.

I just wish he would understand the wonders of Dancing With the Stars and Leave Them Alone!

The Soup can be seen Friday nights on "E" I record it myself.

Chevy Chase

Pierce Hawthorne: Elderly Curmudgeon

Chevy Chase hit the national scene as part of the original and arguably the best, season of Saturday Night Live. He was the first anchor on Weekend Update and did President Gerald Ford's pratfalls to perfection.

He was only a regular cast member for 1 year, but has returned many times as guest host.

He left for a successful movie career. Three, or is it four, of his most popular movies were the Griswald vacation/holiday movies.

Did you know that he was about 10 years older than the original cast?

Pierce Hawthorne

Shirley: I've never been a captain before.
Pierce: I have I commanded a jet ski through an electrical storm and only had one casualty.
Troy: Jet skis only hold two people.
Pierce: Exactly, I saved half the crew.

Yvette Nicole Brown

Shirley Bennett: Divorced Mother of Two, Born Again Christian

I first enjoyed her on commercials where she plays the seemingly naive every woman who makes the remark we all want to make. I figured that some genius plucked her out of obscurity for this show.

Research shows that she actually has an extensive career which includes such shows as Entourage.

Shirley

"My boys are in elementary school and they don't make nearly as many dioramas as we do"

Yvette Nicole Brown

On Entourage

I have included a couple of interview videos to show that she is really a very different person. No hint of ditziness, but as down to earth as her on air personas

Danny Pudi and Donald Glover

Abed and Troy

Two nerds who are way over the top and about as funny as can be. One of the more implausible premises of this show is that Troy is a football player who is also a nerd, who hangs around with the computer nerd. They are a pair that remind me of Martin and Lewis and Rowan and Martin and just about any other great comedy pair. I hope they are together for years.

Danny Pudi, of Indian and Polish decent (there are jokes in the show about that) also studied acting in college and is an alum of Second City, the group that gave us Chris Farley, Andrea Martin, Martin Short and so many more

Donald Glover has been rumored to be the next Barack Obama on SNL, but he denied that. I'm glad, I prefer him here!

Troy and Abed

Always Funny: Never Making Sense

I just had to put a bunch with these two, they are so funny. Don't miss the stuffing the mouth with pencils one! But I started with the rap with Betty White.

Did I tell you that Community is one of those shows where big stars beg to make appearances?

Troy: [Abed is dressed as Batman] Can I ask you something I always wanted to ask the real Batman?
Abed: [in Batman's voice] Yeah!
Troy: Am I good looking?
Abed: You're a very attractive young man.
Troy: I knew it!

Allison Brie and Gillian Jacobs

Annie and Britta

OK, so Jeff has an unrequited crush on Britta and Annie has one of Jeff. What would a show be without a love triangle. However, one of them is a good two shoes and the other is a man-hater (lesbian) with a heart of gold.

These two are stereotypes, but then everyone in Community is a stereotype, and a funny one to boot! But Community has avoided what I call the 'Smuffette Syndrome' where the men or boys get to have lots of stereotypes and then there is just one girl to cover them all.

Allison Brie has been in Mad Men and also studied acting in college. The theme here is that these are real professionals who prepared themselves.

Gillian Jacobs has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows including Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

The Cheerleader and the Protester

Britta: What can i do?
Annie: You can hang the Chacata Panecos piniata
Britta: You guys realize he was beaten to death, right?
Shirley: That's where we got the idea from
Annie: Poignant

Selling Out Your Gender

Annie and Britta Mock Each Other

So one of them is the cheerleader the other the angry man hating woman with a crush on Jeff..... and Shirley, the not skinny black woman looks at the two white girls who think they are so different, and doesn't see any difference at all!

Ken Jeong and Jim Rash

Senor Ben Chang and Dean Pelton

Ken Jeong who plays the guy who is dying to get into the group, but is weekly rejected, and thus plays mean tricks and the gang, is an actor, comedian and physician. This is some high powered group who plays this bunch of losers!

Jim Rash plays Jim Pelton. He has been in such shows as That 70's Show. I have no idea why he has it in for the gang, but maybe its just because they need it as a plot line. Who cares? Its funny!

Love "Community"! I'm telling my age here, but I've been a Chevy Chase fan since the original SNL started! Community is so funny--I love sitcoms with a lot of great characters who interact .
    Great lens!

I hope that this show and the whole cast get noticed and finally receive their well-deserved the Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards.
