You and your neighbors can Shred & Destroy your bulky, private documents -- Recycle by the box
Sprouting up in neighborhoods and towns all over the US, these paper shredding events are gaining in popularity. They tend to happen on a Saturday or Sunday. Check the links to see examples. Are there current events in your area? Can you add some that you know of?
Folks line up with their boxes (often limited to something like three per household), and your boxes will be dumped into a huge mobile shredder. Shredding the paper is said to be better for the environment than destruction for instance by burning paper and releasing toxins into the air.
Secure Your ID Days are held at various BBBs around the country. The last event was on April 21, 2012. Many Free Shredding Events are hosted by local Better Business Bureau locations. Find out if there's one near you. There may be another in the fall around October. We'll let you know here of the date when we find out.
How long to keep records: The Better Business Bureau offers a Records Retention Schedule, supplied by the Internal Revenue Service. This should help to know what to retain and for how long.

Preparation is necessary before packing your boxes to take to the event.

* Home improvement receipts should be kept for six years or permanently.
* Items such as birth certificates, social security cards, insurance policies, titles or wills should be kept permanently in a safety deposit box.
* If you are going to dispose of documents with sensitive information, be sure to SHRED!

As musician Edward Torrez played on the concert grand piano, artist Barbara Hashimoto transferred her stockpile of shredded junk mail onto the piano until it fully engulfed both musician and his instrument. Her movements, initially deliberate and calm, grew into a frenzied crescendo and then into meditative resignation. Buried in paper, Torrez continued to play, his final melodic lullabies muffled by the hundreds of pounds of paper entombing the piano. He succumbed to the interment as Hashimoto made a bed in the newly constructed haystack-like structure and fell to sleep.

Restrict materials for shredding to personal documents only. Other recyclable paper products may be disposed in residential recycling carts as part of regular garbage and recycling curbside collection services, or brought to the SMaRT Station Recycling Center. Paper Flowers:
* To make the stamen: Take a small wooden dowel or stick and wrap the top with black tissues paper forming a small ball on the top. Glue down with craft glue
* Petals: Cut magazine pages into tear drop shapes, progressively making them slightly bigger in size. You will need approximately 25 pieces total
* Starting with the larger pieces of newspaper petals begin gluing them around the stick progressively working outward so that flower shape forms
* Continue gluing on petals until flower shape is formed.

- I haven't had a problem thankfully with my identity being used by others but I have bought a product on a credit card that was a free trial that ended up costing me about $150 a month. It was a huge pain, there was no way of contacting them and the only way I could get the payments to stop coming out was by getting a whole new credit card which ended up being another pain in itself. Not quite identity fraud but definitely a fraud in a way that I wasn't happy about. Unfortunately a shredder couldn't have helped me in that situation.

- Friends of ours used to have a pot belly stove and they'd take advantage of that, especially in the wintertime, to burn documents. They had to work around "No Burn Days," but it was a safe and warm way to go, done by the adults.
