Community Service And Volunteering

Community Service is something that's extremely important to me now that I'm a mother. As a child, I was always taught about the importance of community involvement and encouraged to participate in clubs and other organizations that held volunteerism in high regard, so now that I'm a parent I am trying to do the same thing with my children. I want to do the right thing and I want my kids to do the right thing.

How do you feel about community service?

What is Community Service?

Community Service is much more than it's text book definition.

By Definition, Community Service is "unpaid work which benefits the community", but isn't it really much more than that?

I think that community service is an act of love and I don't think that it's limited to physical labor, although getting your hands dirty for a service project is a great thing to do for your community. I think it's important to use your talents, what ever they are, in a way that impacts the most people possible.

Are you good with your hands? Go work with habitat for humanity. Are you a good organizer? Organize a community cleanup or other group service project. Are you a good writer? Write an article about why community service is important.

It doesn't matter what you do, it just matters that you do something.

“Community Service is using your talents and personal strengths in a way that helps the most people.”

Why Do Community Service?

Why volunteer?

In another Squidoo Lens (Article) I've written, Community Service Ideas , I asked visitors to share with me why they volunteer, and I've received tons of answers. Some of these answers made me tear up because of how heart-felt they were. My favorite one so far is "To feel that i will be leaving this world better than when i got here." Some of the answers were "I got court" or "cops got me", but most were answers from loving, caring, civic minded people looking to make the world a better place.

So back to the question, "Why do community service?"

The short answer? To make the world better.

The long answer? It's rewarding to help others, it helps us feel better about ourselves and increases our sense of community. Volunteering can help us to feel valued and appreciated, and can help us to give our life purpose. We can use our talents to make the world better, is there any reason that's more important?

Who Should Do Community Service?

EVERYONE!!!

How To Choose A Community Service Project?

What opportunites are there to volunteer?

The most important thing to consider when choosing a community service project is to think about what you're passionate about. What are you passionate about?

What came to mind? Was it an existing cause like childrens rights or homelessness, or would you have to work at it to make it a service project?

If you're passionate about something, then you're sure to be able to make a difference. Into video games? Why not organize a gaming for charity event? Love animals? Donate time to a local shelter.

Don't get caught up in the WHAT or the HOW, just act.

Community service was always a big part of our kids schools and I'm glad for that. You do a great job of presenting the why of community service and I think it's really important to do it in an area that you are really passionate about.
