Commuting With a Bike is a Healthy Alternative. Ride Your Bike to Work

While most of my commuting by bike took place when I went to school and College, and a couple years after I went to college, I find that I am using my bike for my online business. I will take the mail to the Post Office. If we need a few supplies I will grab them with my bike. Well I say that this is for the exercise, it is also a way to prolong the life of the car and find a way to cut down on the price of gas.
The world wide sales of bicycles will exceed 61 billion dollars this year, a 14.6 rate over the last 4 years. Giant, a large bicycle manufacturer will see a 10% increase
in sales over 2007. Commuter bicycles are growing faster than any other type of bicycles. Electric bicycles are also selling at an incredible rate. These bikes are really worth looking at for commuting.

What Is the Best Bike for Commuting?

You can use almost any kind of bike for commuting. I personally use a mountain bike with dual suspension. This is the most comfortable bike for me. I also use a gel seat. This is the first thing I did when I got the bike. I swapped seats. It only cost me 12 bucks or so, but it has been used on three different bikes.
There are special bikes that are made for commuting, these use internal gearing rather than the racing bikes and mountain bikes that use external gearing.

The terrain will also depend on what kind of bike you use. If it flat, you can get by with no gear changing, or minimal gear changing.

If the terrain is relatively hilly, you will want a bike that will gear accordingly. In New York states Catskills, the terrain is fairly rough, so I perfer the use of a Mountain Bike.

Electric Bikes Seem Like A Viable Alternative

These Bikes Look Promising.

2008 EZIP MTN Trailz Electric Mountain Bike
(26-Inch Wheels)

These bikes range in price from $350 to $1500, and are a way to combine good health living with getting to work. While the price may seem steep initially, over a very short period of time these bikes will pay for themselves in gas saving.
It is also suggested that you also get two batteries rather than one. You never know when the second battery will come in handy.
These bikes are also good for people who might have some joint problems. Or if you place of work is a bit too far.
The batteries will also come in handy if you have gone just a little too far to ride back home. Believe me this has happened to me. I have ridden to far, and I do not have the physical energy to get home.

Lock Up Everything You Can on Your Bike.

Lock it up Twice if you can.

The theft of bicycles is a growing problem.
  • Make sure that you use a good U-lock.
  • Don't use cable locks
  • Lock it up in well-lit, well travelled areas
  • Make sure that the post or pole is secured to the ground
  • Remove lights, self-locking seats, or wheels
  • Move your bike indoors if possible

Make sure that you write down the serial number of the bike, to help with identifying it if stolen. Take as many pictures of the bike as possible, from every conceivable angle. Many cities have a community registration for bikes. Register your bike with the National Bike Registry .

If the bike is stolen, not only report it to the police. Also list it on craigslist as stolen, bikers are very community conscious, and if they see the bike they will get back to you. You can also buy a bicycle lock fromThe Ultimate Super Mall to keep your bike safe.

Lock Up Your Bike with a U-Lock

These locks are the best. Do not use cable lock as these are easy to cut. Get as much of your bike and secured post or pole in this lock as you can. Do not leave enough room for the thief to pry open the lock or to even damage the bike. A U-lock with a round barrel key can be picked by an experience thief

Might Makes Right! Do not Challenge a Vehicle That Can Do You Harm.

There are many rules that a cyclist should know. I believe that they most important rule is that Give way to the vehicle that can do you the most harm. I hear so many cyclist complain about having the right of way, and being ignored by drivers. Unfortunately, with cycling might makes right. Even though I might have the right of way, I will play it cautiously. I have been cut off so many times, I have had drivers barrel down on me with their hours blaring, drivers will drive so close to you, you can reach out and touch their vehicles, I have been yelled at, and told to get off the road, etc.
I have lived in Europe, and people are much more considerate of cyclist, because so many people cycle. Unfortunately, in North America many drivers see cyclist a nuisance that should be eliminated at any cost. So, with that off my chest.

Give me some of your feedback on Bike Commuting.

I enjoy riding a bike. Riding a bike in the city is something else. If you find a good route around, it can be enjoyable.

I've always wanted an electric bike. I wish they were a bit cheaper, but I think they'll probably drop in price as the novelty wears off. Great lens by the way. 5 stars for you! :)
