The Companion Cube: The Most Beloved And Emotive Character From Portal
This poor cube does nothing to harm you and yet you carry it away and incinerate it. From then on, the guilt lies heavy on your heart, the memories weigh your steps with sadness as you dodge the turret lasers and even the lights of the glowing portals you open seem muted in grief. Everywhere you go, reminders of the tragedy follow: in its poor cousins, the mute and soulless Weighted Cubes that you ruthlessly exploit to complete tests; the very graffiti on the walls; the mocking voice of GLaDOS...
The Companion Cube gets no cake. The Companion Cube is remembered. The Companion Cube has become one of the Portal memes. The WCC has also been knitted, sculpted, baked and folded out of paper. It's even become the name of a Trope.
It was introduced to the game to make players aware of the cubes used to manipulate the various aspects of gameplay.

But people would forget about the box, so we added dialogue, applied the heart to the cube, and continued to up the ante until people became attached to the box. The Companion Cube is Still Alive?
The Weighted Companion Cube has been spotted in the Portal 2 Demos!
And in more recent news, it is confirmed that a weighted Companion Cube does feature in Portal 2.
A smaller version of the Weighted Companion Cube also accompanies the (admittedly insane) Doug Rattman, in the recently released tie-in comic Portal 2: Lab Rat.

The Companion Cube did pop up in Portal 2! Once in a test chamber (GLaDOS Test Chamber 07*) in which GLaDOS 'accidentally' vaporises lookalike versions, and has to be left behind. And then again at the end of the game when you both escape together to live free and gambol in the happy, sunlit fields of freedom.
