COMPARE KINDLES 2012

Ranked #1,791 in Computers & Electronics, #30,284 overall

Compare Kindle 3, Kindle 4, & the New Kindle

Welcome! You are on the right track if trying to compare Kindles and deciding which model is best for you. First, you are looking into the very best e-reader for the money, and second, you found the lens with absolutely all the information you need to make a wise decision.

Did you know that in Jan of 2011, Amazon announced that on its site, digital books were outselling their traditional print counterparts for the first time ever, with an average of 115 Kindle editions being sold for every 100 paperback editions? But, why? What's making digital books so popular? One of the main reasons is (without doubt) the introduction of the Kindle, which has now become the world's best selling e-reader.

I have put together a chart showing every Kindle available today along with its most important features, so you can compare Kindles easily.

15% of all proceeds from Kindle sales through this lens go to support U.S. veterans and their families. Thank you for visiting!

Know The Difference

3G vs Wi-Fi

3G vs WI-FI: For those wondering about the two connectivity options, this is what you need to know: 3G is cellular technology, which covers over 100 countries and territories. Cell towers first connect to the internet, and then to the Amazon own network (Whispernet). It is FREE! Amazon pays for the 3G's wireless connectivity with your Kindle Touch 3G, Kindle Keyboard 3G, and Kindle DX models. There's no setup, your Kindle is ready to download right out of the box.

Wi-Fi is wireless technology. Connect to the net either at your home through a wireless (router) network, or at one of the hundreds of FREE AT&T Wi-Fi HOTSPOTS available - no AT&T registration, or sign-in is required. All Kindle models ( except for the Kindle DX ) come with built-in Wi-Fi, which automatically detects any nearby wireless networks. Other FREE HOTSPOTS and pay-per-use hotspots may require to enter a password.

Special Offers

ADS vs NO ADS

When deciding between Kindles with or without special offers (ads), my advice is to go the cheaper route and purchase with the special offers, simply because there are no ads or invasive pop-ups or pop-overs anywhere within the text of anything you are reading. The ads appear on the screensaver or on half-inch strip at the bottom of the home page - only the home page. Besides, some offers are pretty good like $10 for a $20 Amazon.com Gift Card or $1 for Kindle e-books regularly at $9.

INTRODUCING THE KINDLE FIRE

FULL SPECS AND FEATURES

THE ALL-NEW KINDLE FIRE COMES WITH A 7" MULTI-TOUCH COLOR SCREEN.

"Amazon's Kindle Fire is likely to be the first successful tablet not sold by Apple, and there are several good reasons for it: the low price of $199, the convenient, portable size of 7 inches, and a rich catalog of books, movies and music offered through Amazon's Web-based services."
    - Ars Technica

    • RELEASE DATE: Nov 15, 2011

    • PRICE: $199 (No Ads Only)

    • CONNECTIVITY: WI-FI only

    • INTERFACE: Color multi-touch display with IPS (in-plane switching) technology and anti-reflective treatment. Full touchscreen display for navigation, turning pages, and note taking, including a virtual keyboard.

    • DISPLAY: 7" Color screen, 1024 x 600 pixel resolution at 169 ppi, 16 million colors.

    • AUDIO: 2 rear mounted stereo speakers with a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack. Good for audio books and mp3s. You can listen to background music while you read.

    • WEIGHT: 14.6 ounces (413 grams).

    • DIMENSIONS: 7.5" x 4.7" x 0.45" (190 mm x 120 mm x 11.4 mm).

    • BATTERY: Up to 8 hours of continuous reading or 7.5 hours of video playback, with wireless off. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as web browsing and downloading content. It takes about 4 hours for the battery to become fully charged via power adapter (included), or via USB 2.0 (cable not included) to a PC or Mac.<

The Kindle Fire's battery lasts hours instead of weeks due to its LCD screen (same as a laptop), which needs much more power than an e-ink screen. In fact, Fire's battery life is average for such a device.

    • WARRANTY: 1-Year Limited and for US customers only an optional 2-Year Protection Plan

Get the Best Out of Your Kindle Fire

The following are ways to make your Kindle Fire as productive and versatile as possible.

  • You don't have to start buying books right after purchasing the e-reader. You can download free books from the Amazon Store by searching for "Kindle Free Classics", or from feedbooks.com, manybook.net, thefreelibrary.com, freekindlebooks.org, and justfreebooks.info.

  • Applications running in the background can slow down the Fire. In the settings menu select "more" and then "applications" to see all the applications running at that time. Select an application and then select "force stop" to close it.

  • The Fire comes with documents and applications that use up memory. Press and hold down your finger on an item until "delete" or "favorite" pops us. Select delete to get rid of the unwanted application.

  • To find out how much battery power or memory available are left, touch the settings icon and select "more", and then "device".

  • If you have too many tabs open in your Amazon Silk Browser, you can clear them all at once by touching and holding down one tab and selecting the "close all tabs" option.

  • You can download apps not only from the Amazon App Store, but from the Google Android Market as well. Go to settings, select "more" and then "device" and turn on "Allow Installation of Application". Go to 4share.com in your browser and search for Android apps by adding the letters "apk" to the search. Download the app, click on the file in the pulldown bar when done, and install.

5 Tips to Make Fire's Battery Last Longer

The following tricks will not only help conserve the Kindle Fire's battery charge beyond the 8-hour maximum, but will extend the life of it as well.

  • Lower the brightness of the screen.

  • Charge battery only when power is low or empty

  • Set the Kindle Fire to sleep mode whenever you are done reading.

  • Set the Kindle Fire to automatically lock after several minutes of inactivity, which will also put the device to sleep.

  • Turn WiFI feature off immediately after each use.

"Simply put, it's the best dedicated ebook reader you can buy. Amazon has managed to increase the contrast on the Kindle in a way that sets it above the Nook, Sony Readers, or any other dedicated ebook reader we've tested, in fact given its new low price along with its massive library of ebooks and dead-simple book buying, the Kindle keeps its crown as our Editors' Choice." - PC Magazine

"Between $79 and $149, the new E Ink Kindles bring dedicated e-readers to their iPod Shuffle moment. There's really no longer a reason for anyone with a little bit of disposable income who reads e-books not to have one... Nobody else is likely to match those prices or features any time soon." - Wired.com

"Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades-an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price-vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category. The other upside to e-ink displays is that they aren't backlit, which not only is supposed to reduce eye strain but it allows you to see the screen-better, in fact-in brightly lit environments, including direct sunlight. By contrast, the iPad is hard to read outside because its LCD gets washed out in direct sunlight and the glass covering the screen is reflective and creates glare issues." -- CNET
