Compare Linux Hosting: Is The OS Important?
Ranked #140,691 in Business & Work, #1,088,498 overall
Why Compare Linux Hosting?
A lot of web designers have a desire to compare Linux hosting with Windows hosting. A few years ago, the difference between Linux and Windows hosting was expansive. Choosing an operating system to host your site dictated what you would be able to do with the server and how you could design your website. Now, choosing Linux hosting is a matter of preference.
Does It Matter?
Is Having The Best Linux Hosting Important?
There are a few web designers who want to be able to compare Linux hosting with other operating systems. Some time ago, the differences between Linux and Windows hosting were great. Picking an operating system that will host your site played a large part in how you would be able to design your website. Nonetheless, in this era of cross-system web hosting, there is not much that differentiates one operating system from another. Currently, the best Linux hosting and the best Windows hosting are comparable. Do The Differences Matter?
But, there remain a few differences between the OS. One of the most significant differences lies in the way users network with the server. Both Linux and Windows offer FTP access to the files. Yet, Linux is the only one that offers telnet or ssh access. More than likely, this feature is targeted at their respective audiences. While Windows is targeted to a wide range of people, Linux is intended for people more familiar with computer programming.Regardless, this is not a fundamental difference, since there is little to differentiate FTP from telnet or ssh practically. FTP lets you download the file locally, while telnet and ssh allow you to change the root file on the web server through UNIX commands.
Linux And Windows: Talking Right Past Each Other
Words Matter
Linux and Windows hosting also differ in the use of diverse programming languages. Linux works best with PHP, Perl, and CGI languages and Windows focuses on ColdFusion and ASP. In addition to the programming languages, Linux and Windows employ different database languages as well. Windows users would rather use Access while Linux users would rather work with MySQL.Windows inscribes pages in .htm format and Linux creates its websites in .html. For most, these differences are minute. But, they can make a major difference if you like a particular language more than another. Trying to make changes to Access files using an operating system that utilizes Linux can be discouraging for many new web designers.
Linux Hosting Plans Versus Windows Hosting Plans
Tale Of The Tape
Linux hosting plans are different from other OS hosting plans in other ways. In regards to security concerns, the common wisdom states that Windows has a variety of security concerns that make it more unstable. Mostly, this assumption is correct. It is important to remember that Linux has vulnerabilities too. Yet, most people agree that Linux is better at issuing updates and patches because their system is open source. Windows fixes their vulnerabilities when they issue periodic service packs. The average person looking to create a website relies on the network administrator for security. For competent administrators, it will not matter which OS is being used.Ultimately, the choice is yours. Whether you personally prefer Windows or Linux, it is smarter to pick a Linux hosting plan or a Windows hosting plan based on the features and services it offers. Especially since the distinctions between the two are small. If your website needs a specific language for any reason, then it would be wise to check for compatibility issues before deciding on a web host.
Compare Linux Hosting...
Why bother?
However, if you do not have specific requirements, then it is easier to let the system administrators decide whether you have the best Linux hosting plan or whether you should use Windows hosting, while you focus your energy on creating the best website possible. Instead of trying to compare Linux hosting with Windows, work on creating content as it is more important than the programming language or the OS of the web servers. New RSS: Add your blog
