A Compendium of Curiosities -- Book Review

Do you love paper crafting? Tim Holtz has written a handbook for using many of his signature products lines. My review shares a few of my favorite techniques and one of my finished tags.

The nitty gritty

Metal flower with distress embossing powderThe Tools section includes several pages listing products by Tim Holtz. A brief explanation is given for each of the tools and supplies.

Next come two sections that are the real meat of the book. Ideas includes 22 pages of suggestions for using many of the hardware, paper, rubber stamps and grunge board items in the various Tim Holtz lines. Techniques give the reader 35 pages of samples and step-by-step instructions for many of the techniques perfected by Tim.

The final section is a Gallery of several pages of finished projects. These include scrapbook pages, tags cards and a frame.

I think this book is a must for all fans of Tim Holtz and his many products. Keep in mind that there are no instructions for the finished projects in the gallery--just suggested uses for the products sold under the Tim Holtz brand name.

A few of my favorites

I tried some techniques on this card

Sample card using Compendium of Curiosities techniquesThe valentine card to the left will be sent to Operation Write Home as part of their push for Valentine's to send to deployed soldiers. The soldiers will then have handmade cards to send to their sweethearts for the holiday.

I used the Tag and Bookplates die to make the tag. The red oval frame is one of the bookplates. The pink paper for the tag is from the Vintage Shabby paper stack

The heart on the lower right side was made by attaching a mask to the tag and then spritzing over it with some Glimmer Mist. When the mask if removed, the lighter paper shows through in the shape of a heart. The white heart in the upper right corner is a button from my stash.

I attached the completed card to a white card base and attached a bit of ribbon to the tag.
