Compliment Me!

From the lens Would You Rather Be Praised or Paid?.

Unless we're talking a substantial amount of money, I'll take the compliments. Go ahead. Lay it on thick. Compliments make me feel good and I can keep them forever. Money is nice but once I spend it, it's gone. So go ahead and compliment me! Leave me your praise. Hit me with a few stars at the top of this page. Favorite me. Join my fan club. I love it!

Great debate, good questions. 5 stars! You are correct, the answer is not easy. Accepting praise or being paid depends upon the situation. Praise is great when it is genuine. Everyone like a nice gift once in a while also. The praise I value most is when it is due to my service to others for humanitarian reasons. Praise on the job is valuable too, it has been shown to make employees more productive. But employees should be paid for performance also when due. When it comes to tipping for professional services well done, it is the proper thing to do. Most importantly, the receiver of praise or money should always be gracious.

Great Monkeybrain debate, good choice of a topic. It's got people talking!
  • GeoDitton Feb 3, 2009 @ 9:10 am | delete
Very fun, a clever little lens. I think I read a similar theory when I was studying motivation for my A-level Business studies. It was basically saying if you can't afford to pay people to work harder then if you compliment them they will feel appreciated and so do more for you. Overall I think a bit of both is best you need money to survive but compliments make you feel better. It all depends on the situation at the time. Any way great lens. Thanks :)

I enjoyed this lens. I was surprised by the number of votes for the compliment. I guess there is hope for us after all.

They can praise me by paying me ! Why settle for just one or the other ?
  • TessaGreen Dec 4, 2008 @ 2:11 pm | delete
Brilliant fun. You've done an extraordinary job here - I am in so much awe. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to have a lot of fun gassing away here. Very well done.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading and participating in this lens. There is actually a lot more to think about. Thought provoking and brilliant. Congratulations.

I was a waitress for many years. I have gotten lots of tips and lots of compliments, often compliments and bigger tips.

I have had people quietly give me a huge tip and not say a word. I have had people compliment me all night and leave a smaller tip or no tip.

The first always felt good, the second made me feel used.

A compliment with a normal tip was also ok, btw.

I guess it depends on the business, though. Some professions, tips are insulting or at least inappropriate.

Great lens. It kind of helps to put a perspective on things.
  • EditionH Oct 7, 2008 @ 2:49 am | delete
This question is without any relevance for real life ! Think about it: Did someone ever have the choice put up here ? We all want to get paid reasonable for the work we do and we also need praise to stay motivated in the job.
  • jeana900 Aug 24, 2008 @ 12:19 pm | delete
Fantastic lens. Great questions, some made me have to think twice. Really nice debate.

Praise is important and doing a favor for a friend is easy. Its when people I barely know want me to donate my time rather than go through the school and hire a tutor... I don't like being taken advantage of.
    Great lens

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. Hmmm... Check out what's trying to be passed with the Orphan Works Act. If this goes through it could be that we'd have to PAY to receive compliments! But you definitely deserve stars for this lens.

It looks like Squidoo needs a need module cos most of your questions I'm in the middle with. It would all depend on whether I did the job for monetary gain or not. A few of my lenses are not to sell things but to give away Free advice, though sometimes I don't know why I bother when ppl come along and gives me three stars, its free advice and they slap me in my face, figuratively speaking of course.
As for would I prefer a promotion or a raise, that would also depend on why I was working for the firm. My last so called REAL job, I did for the enjoyment, I didn't care how much I got paid so I would take the promotion. On the other hand if it was a job that the dole office had forced me to get they could shove their promotion where the sun don't shine and give me a raise.
In conclusion, its more the frame of mind you are in at the time to which course you would take.
BTW rms I love ur lenses and I have been a fan of yours for a long time -keep up the good work, u inspire me to try harder

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to the bottom of this lens. Fan already, 5*s, Favorite, PayPal address for large cash transaction? Anything else?

This is a great MonkeyBrain debate. I like how you included more than one duel module, as well as polls. It was really fun to participate so much in a lens, even though these were tough questions. It just dawned on me that compliments are more scarce than money. I get paid a couple times a month, but I get a really good compliment less often than that.
  • jeffwend Apr 24, 2008 @ 10:47 pm | delete
What's your paypal address, I'll complement you with a tip =) JK, Great debate here and blessings.

I read a book called "Die Broke" that forever changed the way I feel about earning and spending money. In most parts of my life, I prefer compliments, though. Well executed debate!

Wow, I try to think of my self as not too materialistic but, you know.....well, a girl has to pay bills and stuff. Although, I DO love a sincere compliment.
    Oooh, now my head hurts.
    Good job
  • beeobrien Apr 24, 2008 @ 9:35 am | delete
Ooh, Robin, you've got me thinking hard about this one. I guess it depends how much you need the money. If it's a bonus and you can already pay your bills, pour on those compliments. Outstanding lens.
  • Rock_The_Ice Apr 24, 2008 @ 9:18 am | delete
Great lens. I prefer money so I'll keep that in my pocket and give you stars instead! =]
