Computer Maintence Basics 101

Step 1: Click on "Start" in the lower left hand side of the screen.
Step 2. Click the "Search programs and Files".
Step 3: Type "Disk Cleanup" press enter.
Step 4: A dialog box may appear letting you know the Diskcleanup utility is calculting the space you can clear up by running this tooo. Don't worry nothing for you to do here. If you don't see this then means it done the calculation faster then it can bring up this dialog box.
Step 4: The screen should appear like you see above. I recommend checking every checkbox for maximum results. However if you see one or more you do not wish to have cleared then do nut check mark it. (i.e. recycle bin).
Step 5: Click OK.
Step 6: You will see a dialog box that will ask you are you sure you wish to perform these actions. Click Yes.
Step 7: Then you will see a dialog box that will show you the status of the actions being form.

You are done. The computer will take it from here. You can leave the computer if you wish. When utility finishes you will be back to the wndows screen.

Step 1: Click Start in the lower left hand side of the screen.
Step 2: Click "Search programs and files".
Step 3: Type "disk defrag"
Step 4: A dialog box like the one above will appear.
Step 5: Click the one says, "Local Hard Disk".
Step 6: Click start.

Thats it. The utility will finish without any futher steps from you so you may leave you computer if you wish. When it is complete the utility will display the defragment results.

Step 1: Open your browser
Step 2: Type in http://www.download.com
Step 3: A page will appear like you see above.
Step 4: Click on the "Most Popular" where indicated by being circled in red on the left side of the screen.
Step 5: Continue the steps below.

Step 6: Click the "AVG FREE" where indicated by a box above.
Step 7: Then follow the last steps below.

Step 7: Click on where it says "Download Now" where indicated with an red underline on the picture above.
Step 8: A dialog box should appear. Click the option to save the file.
Step 9: Click "Save".
Step 10: A dialog box will appear showing you the status of the download.
Step 11: When the download completes click, "Open".
Step 12: Follow the on screen insctructions to install AVG Free.

Your Done!

Step 1: Click the above picture or go to: downlaod.com.
Step 2. You will see the below screen. In the search box type Zonealarm Free as shown in the above picture.
Step 3: Continue the steps in the next section.

Step 4: Click on the the link as highlighted by the red box in the above picture.
Step 5: Continue the steps in the next section.

Step 6: Click the link in the red box as showed above.
Step 7: A dialog box should appear asking you to save. Click save.
Step 8: When the download finishes, click "open" and follow the on screen instructions to install Zonealarm Free.

Your Done!

This is probably the hardest to do so far and cannot be done automatically by your computer.

1. Click on "start" in the lower left-hand of your screen.
2. In the search box type "Run" then hit the enter key.
3. A program pictured below will appear. In the box labeled "msconfig" as in the picture bwlow type in the samething into yours. Hit the enter key.

4. A program like the picture below will appear. Click on the startup tab. I don't mess with the other tabs and I suggest you don't unless you know what you are doing.

5. On the screen you will see the below picture. Most of these your probably not going to know. Leave thsese as is.
6. Now find the ones you do know. Now this will be up to you if you want them checked on not. If you wish they not be loaded make sure there is no check in the box. Like I suggested only programs I see important to load automatically is virus and firewall software along with a piece of accessibility software I have.

The goal here is to have as many unchecked items you are familer with as possible. This will make your computer to load quicker and run faster.
7. When done click "Apply" then "ok" buttons.
Your done!

Please note: Do this often and every time you install a program to keep this clear as much as possible.
