Disk Cleanup Utility

Cleans old computer files your computer makes on a regular bases and more...

This will not however delete your personal files. This will NOT delete:

Pictures
Documents
Videos
Music
Software

This WILL delete the following:

Emty Recycle Bin

How much room this will relieve will depend on how much you use your computer and how often you run the disk cleanup utilities. How long this takes also depends on how much you use your computer and how often you run it.

The more often you run the disk cleanup utility the less amount of time it will take to run. If you run it weekly this should only take a few minutes.

You should be having your computer scanned for virues on a daily bases. Viruses can really destroy your computer and there could be spyware on your computer to collect personal data such as login information, credit card information, identity information, bank account information, and more.

Also you need to update your virus scanning software on a regular bases. New viruses and spyware come out on a dialy bases and the software can only find what it knows to look for and can only remove it based on the latest definitions.

Most virus scanning programs cost $30 or more and usually cost on a yearly bases due to the regular updating that has to be done. However you can download a good free virus scanner for your computer.

Windows Startup

Far to often this gets filled up and can take forever for your computer to load. Can bogg down your computer as well.

This also should be done or a regular bases. However this is one of the more difficult ones to perform. You don't want to remove something that needs to be loaded up. Here is a list of tipical programs you can choose to delete from the startup retine:

Yahoo Messenger
AOL Messenger
ICQ
MSN Messenger

Tipically I like to only auto load my virus and internet security programs. Anything else can be loaded manually as needed.

This procdure can be time consumer if you dont perform it often. This cannot be done automatically by your computer.

This does not cost you anything.

1. Click on "start" in the lower left-hand of your screen.
2. In the search box type "Run" then hit the enter key.
3. A program pictured below will appear. In the box labeled "msconfig" as in the picture bwlow type in the samething into yours. Hit the enter key.

Step-by-step Instructions: Removing Startup Programs

4. A program like the picture below will appear. Click on the startup tab. I don't mess with the other tabs and I suggest you don't unless you know what you are doing.

Step-by-step Instructions: Romoving Startup Programs

5. On the screen you will see the below picture. Most of these your probably not going to know. Leave thsese as is.
6. Now find the ones you do know. Now this will be up to you if you want them checked on not. If you wish they not be loaded make sure there is no check in the box. Like I suggested only programs I see important to load automatically is virus and firewall software along with a piece of accessibility software I have.

The goal here is to have as many unchecked items you are familer with as possible. This will make your computer to load quicker and run faster.
7. When done click "Apply" then "ok" buttons.
Your done!

Please note: Do this often and every time you install a program to keep this clear as much as possible.

Delete Old Programs

These are software you no longer use. These should be deleted.

This don't usually harm your computer or help performance unless your running out of hard drive space. However doing it often saves on a ton of time going through the programs and uninstalling all the ones you no longer use. If you wait till you run out of room this can take hours and hours.

This too can not be done automatically by your computer.
This is also a free tectnique.

Computer NO NOs

Okay, , I'm not going to talk about the obvious ones here like...

Taking a swim or giving it a bath. Or other obvious misuse of a computer. These ones are just as obvious to some but not so much to others. So here is my list of computer NO NOs.
  • Do Not Download Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs. These can harm your computer by you downloading any file from anyone which could contain viruses or spyware. Thes could be programs such as, Kazaa, Limewire, and so many more. These do not include ones like from stores such as: Walmart and Amazon.
  • Do NOT download from torrent sites. These are worse then P2P software. These again will get you viruses and spyware.
  • Stay away from sexually explicit websites. These generally bring in harmful viruses to your computer.
  • Facebook. You got to be very careful of this site. Not the makers but there are many people trying to put harmful files on your computer. If you get emails from Facebook Do NOT click on links in them. Go to Facebook yourself and then go to the place (i.e. friend confirmations, invites, etc.). These all be on the site itself. Even if you know the person well. People are hacking into other peoples Facebook and sending these emails with a link that will put harmful files on your computer.
  • Do NOT run a computer without antivirus and Internet security software. Do NOT run your computer without these programs automatically updating. As I said before there are good free software available for download.
  • Do NOT leave your computer running 24/7. At the very least shut it down every night before going to bed. Even in sleep or hibernation mode the computer still needs to be off sometimes. Leaving it on, sleep, standby, or hibernate to much will slow your computer down and make it crash more often.
  • If all is possible Do NOT shut the computer down improperly. This includes the power button or power supply. First try using the task manager (shift+cntr+del on most computers) will usually call this program and try getting the unresponding program to shut down. Shuting your computedr down to much causes a lot of software and hardware failures if done to many times. So lets try to avoid it if all is possible. If you keep your computer maintain and avoid these NO NOs then this won't happen that much.

Do You Use Computer Maintence?

Do you do computer maintence on a regular bases?

Yes

KonaGirl says:

Absolutely!

ajgodinho says:

Yes, I do regular maintenance on my laptop - I use Norton 360 which has worked very well for PC maintenance as well as internet security. I've used it for several year now, but I know that there are several other good applications out there. I also review my temporary internet files and cookies regularly.

crosscreations says:

Yes I do, but could improve on it.

No

Important!

Remember The Most Important Thing...

Do your computer maintence on a daily and weekly bases or the process will take you many hours to complete. Also not doing it on a regular bases can harm your Computer

Feedback Please!

Really good information James, that too many people are not aware of. I disagree with you on AVG, though. I think Avast is a much better free program. It catches a lot that even the beast Norton misses. I fried my computer twice when using AVG, to viruses it didn't catch. MalwareBytes is another good program to have installed.

Great tips here on computer maintenance - I agree it's important to do so especially that we use the internet so much now. There is a lot of phishing going on at Facebook and I'm glad you pointed that out here on your lens too because a lot of people are falling prey to hackers who are taking over people's FB accounts and gaining access to their FB friend's lists and then using phishing tactics.
  • crosscreations Dec 11, 2010 @ 6:15 am | delete
This is critical computer maintenance information, James, thanks for assembling it here. Most households now have at least one computer and yet so many people have no clue about basic maintenance. An ounce of prevention.... :-)
