Ranked #5,556 in Computers & Electronics, #114,671 overall

So you think you're computer is running slow and you want to run a computer speed test to check it out?

There's nothing more frustrating then having a slow computer. I know the feeling.

I hate it when I run into the room to quickly check my email 15 minutes later I'm still there because it took too so long for it to load.

What Causes My Computer To Run So Slowly?

There are several things that could cause your computer to run slowly. Here are a few of the most common.

Your Computer is a Clunker

Your computer is too old and just don't have the power to run today's software and technology. If you're computer is more than 2 years old, you might want to look into upgrading it to stay up to date with technology.

The Windows Registry

One of the most crucial files in Windows is called the registry. The registry file contains very important information about your computer, the programs installed, hardware information, and much more. When this file becomes cluttered over time, it slows down the whole system.

Running out of Room

Too many programs installed, low on space. Windows takes advantage of the available space on your harddrive. When this space is low, windows will run very slowly. Also if the harddrive is not organized by running a disk defragementer, the fragmented files causes the computer to slow down as well.

Things you Don't Know About

Too many things running in background. Majority of programs that you install also runs in the background. Any type of firewall, virus scanner, spyware scanner, cameras, printers, email programs, etc, etc, etc usually install software that runs in the background monitoring your system. At any given time, even with nothing on your screen, there could be hundred of programs that are running in the background. These programs also use some of your computer's resources and when they're all running at once it's a huge drain on your system. Especially if your computer is a couple years old.

Corrupt Files

Sometimes when files are corrupt they cause the computer to run very slowly. Not all files in your computer are critical, but they play an important role in maintaining the health of the computer. If these files become corrupt and cannot perform their function windows cannot run at optimal speed.

Whenever you're online doing your normal routine Internet Explorer will save a copy of just about everything you view online. Web pages, images, etc are all downloaded and saved on your computer in an effort to speed up sites that you visit often.

While this is not a bad thing, over time this can add up fast and cause problems with Internet Explorer such as running slowly, freezing, and crashing.

Deleting Cookies in Internet Explorer 7

Cookies on the other hand are a little different. You're probably heard all the bad things about cookies, but I'm here to tell you they are not bad. A cookie is just a small file placed on your computer by a website that keeps a copy of your personalized settings with them. They're not harmful or anything, but can cause speed issues if they become corrupt or you have too many on your computer.

How to Run a Disk Defrag?

The purpose of the disk defragmenter is a little hard to explain to a non techie. Basically when a file is saved on your computer, that one file could be split into hundreds of pieces and saved in blocks throughout the harddrive.

Because this one file is split into hundreds of pieces throughout the drive, it takes windows a long time to locate each piece and put them back together.

The disk defragmenter looks at your entire drive and rearranges everything so these pieces are all together in one location. Because of this, the time it takes the computer to retrieve files from the drive is increased, which in turn speeds up the computer.
