Password Storage and Management Software: Safely and Securely Store Computer, Social Media, and Other Account Passwords
Ranked #21,480 in Computers & Electronics, #416,204 overall
Tips and Tools to Safely and Securely Store all of Your Account Passwords.
Pretty much anything you do online anymore requires you to create an account along with a username and password that you must record and remember. When you have dozens of passwords to remember things become even more hectic. Using the same password for everything is ill advised and likely not even possible. Writing everything down is tedious and not a very secure solution.
Since I literally deal with hundreds of usernames and passwords between myself and my clients I had to find a way to securely and affordably manage online passwords and account information. I decided to create a lens sharing the very affordable software I use (less than 20 bucks!) along with some other low cost or free solutions.
I realize you need easy to use, affordable and secure password storage and password management software so I decided to create a lens featuring just that. I've started out listing some of the most popular and widely known solutions but this lens certainly isn't all inclusive. This lens is certainly something that I will add to and that will continue to evolve over time so check back often. If you'd like to suggest a password storage program I've left out feel free to leave me a comment and let me know.
Why Is Software or an App Needed to Keep Track of Things?
Its not THAT big of a deal is it?
I used to be a pen and paper type guy. Not too long ago my password management software was a piece of paper and an ink pen. That paper grew to front and back and then on to several sheets of paper. Of course with use those sheets became worn, torn, faded, wrinkled, misplaced, coffee stained and anything else you can imagine.
I went on to create an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to track things. That worked well enough but it didn't work so well if I was using a computer without Microsoft Office or the needed program installed. As I began to get involved with the world of Chiropractic Internet and Social Media marketing I needed to store the log in information of my clients. Obviously a secure and encrypted solution was needed at that point. Having someone steal your own information is bad enough, but letting a client's usernames and passwords get stolen is simply unacceptable. I began searching for the best low cost or free password storage and management software on the market. This lens highlights some of my favorites.

Store your passwords with affordable password storage software!
CoffeeCup LockBox: My Ultimate Secure Password Storage Solution
Secure and Affordable Account Password Storage.
Sometimes the best solution is paid software. Fortunately that doesn't mean you need to pay an arm and a leg. I have used CoffeeCup's LockBox program for about two years to store all of my personal passwords and account log in information. I also use it to store the passwords of my clients' accounts.
LockBox is awesome because you can store usernames, passwords, and account information all in one place. It has fields to allow you to add the email address you used for account creation. it even has a section for notes so you can store notes about particular accounts and more!
Having a problem coming up with a secure or randomized password? Do you think you've used "password" or "1245" as your password too many times? That's no problem with LockBox. With one click of the mouse the software will automatically generate a randomized password for you! You can even store the URL of the account. Simply click on the icon and you'll be taken to the website for the account. You'll still have to enter your log in information yourself but LockBox Password storage software even makes that easy. With it's one click password or username copy function you can quickly copy your username and paste into into the corresponding field on the website.
LockBox makes organizing your information a breeze. You can create individual groups for your accounts. Store email addresses, social media and banking or financial passwords and log in information in their own groups. Don't worry if you have a ton of passwords because LockBox also has a great search function to allow you to find the log in information you need in a jiffy.
Security is another feature I absolutely LOVE about LockBox. I know when I store my own, and my clients', passwords and account log in information that I'm doing it in a very secure manner. LockBox stores all your passwords and account information securely using 448-bit Blowfish encryption!
With LockBox the only username and password I need to remember are the secure ones I use to log in to the LockBox program itself. LockBox minimizes to your system tray when not in use and you can even set it to require users to log back in every time its maximized and accessed from the tray for added security. You can also set it to mask passwords while the program is open.
CoffeeCup makes awesome affordable software and they have a killer support staff in the unlikely event you'd ever have a problem. Their LockBox program is currently just $19.00 and you get free updates for life. Simply log in to your coffeecup account and download the new version whenever the software is updated.

Free Open Source Password Management and Storage Solutions!
KeePass is a totally free and opensource secure password storage software program.
KeePass password software stores all sensitive information using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES, Rijndael) and the Twofish algorithm to encrypt its password databases.
The program is also portable and can be run from a USB stick on Windows based systems without the need to install the program or any files on the computer! I didn't know about KeePass when I purchased CoffeeCup's LockBox program but it appears to offer very similar security, features and functionality in a free open source format. If I didn't love LockBox I would definitely take a long hard look at KeePass as a comparable alternative for my secure password storage needs!

Mitto
Online Password Storage and Managment
Mitto.com is a website that offers secure online password storage and password management. Mitto is a word from Latin that means "to send" and the site literally sends you your account passwords from the cloud securely.
I love the concept of the site but I admit I'm a little leery of letting another company store my passwords or the passwords of my clients. One thing I really like about the site however is the fact that it has auto log-in capabilities for many sites. Instead of bringing up your password and username for you to copy or type in, Mitto can actually automatically log you in to some websites with a single click! Awesome idea but again I think I'm a little overly paranoid about security risks.
Mitto is currently free but the site does report they intend to include advertisements and some sort of paid premium service for members in time.
Head on over to Mitto.com and take the tour, learn more about the site and see if it's for you!
