Finding Good Computer Protection Software--Who's Can We Really Trust?
With the onslaught of computer protection software in the last few years it has been hard to find one that you can trust much less operate once it is installed. Most of us (yes that would be some of us older folks) are not computer geeks by even the longest stretch. We are the proverbial "user".
Our understanding of antivirus is the flu shot or some other medical immunization. Anti spyware is a by product from the cold war. Isn't it? Or is it some James Bond gadget? How about a firewall? That's the wall between the engine block and my legs on my '65 Mustang, right?
Being online constantly and having to answer questions for my old Uncle who is online as well has educated me more than I thought possible. A lot of trial and error had a lot to do with it. However, I did get an education. One thing is obvious; there is a real desparate need to protect our computers from being attacked.
Security Software.
Internet Security-The infernal eternal search.
To my shame I did not search for the best internet security software. Probably because I did not really know the consequences or that I should. After downloading many different free anti virus and/or anti spyware software I discovered it was not good to go free. Frustratingly slow internet, unwanted ads, computer lockups and two new computers helped me to realize that. By the way, what is a computer firewall? Anyhow, I bumped through computer protection software after software. Some internet security programs put on more spyware than it took off.I talked to known computer enthusiast, any IT managers I knew and the occasional brother in-law for the best computer protection free programs out there. It was a very mixed bag of info so I did the trial and error method. Again, to my shame. Even inquiries about the top computer protection software you pay for yielded about the same results.
It seemed to me that different antivirus and spyware software cover some problems while others cover different problems. That may be due to the fact that I never worked regularly at updating or setting the security software auto updates. My experience has been that software providers don't always work at keeping the most current threats up to date in the program even if you do remember to run their updates.
I remember getting Symantec's Norton or was it McAfee's update information in the email telling me I had to GO to their website to update. The fact that I had to go their site during those early days in my "surfing" days to keep up dated problem added to my frustration of finding a good antivirus software.
Finding Good Internet Security Software.
Internet Security Software Programs. Three types that should be used together to provide the best protection.
Anti Spyware. Spyware is just that. Software that spies on you! This is the path of hackers getting into your computer and taking over. Most software programs for spyware detection are good at catching the information links called cookies. However, they may not catch the ever changing keylogger programs which is the biggest threat to identity theft in today's world. Catching these menancing programs demand diligent detection updating and regular scanning.
Firewall. The job of this software is to make your computer disappear from the internet. A firewall functions as a gateway to the many ports (information openings) in your computer. Many firewall software programs have set rules that allow or disallow websites or other like entities from communicating with your computer. A good firewall should alert you of all communication and give you the option of permitting access to your system.
Regular automatic updating of threat definitions. I found this to be one of the most important features of computer protection software.. This updating feature alone is the kingpin of keeping any firewall, anti spyware and/or anti virus software operating with effectiveness.
Effective computer security diligently applied is paramount to protecting important files, personal and critical information from hackers and thieves!
The Anti Virus Scanner or scammer?
Even though my experience with these spyware / virus scanners was less than stellar and the source of earlier computer problems I checked it out as requested. (I'm trying to be a good Nephew!) Very much to my surprise it did not give me the normal notice "you have 100 spyware and malware programs on your computer, you must download our software immediately to clean this problem". I had 50 malware problems and three Trojans. In fact it suggested that I find computer protection software that I trusted. It did of course make an offer its security software as well.

Let me tell you this last story and then I will let you go. I forgot to turn on my firewall after loading an online program (of my choosing of course). It wasn't two days that my computer got loaded up with two Trojans and scads of malware junk. My computer came to a snails pace. Realizing the problem, I turned on the firewall and it went off like a five alarm fire bell telling me that there were all these problems and programs. I did not know all that it was telling me so I "permitted" all of these programs.
I called Invivus' computer services and the tech took time and worked out all the problems right from his Utah offices. I think he spent three hours. I did not pay any extra money for his time.
Don't listen to me. You be the judge.
My computer security software is good stuff. I get a firewall, anti spyware and anti virus software (that is updated daily!!!). I also get all the computer technician help I ask for. NO EXTRA CHARGE! You be the judge. Due diligence is a paramount when it comes to computer security.
