Computer Security: Things You Must Know!

Yesterday I was having lunch with a co-worker when he mentioned being "bummed out" because his computer locked up the previous day.

He went on to say he brought the hard drive to a computer store and was hoping and praying they were able to retrieve some of his and his family's important documents that have been saved over the past 4 years. minneapolis landscapers

Reflecting on his dilemma, I thought of my own situation and pondered what I would have done if the same had occurred to me.

I immediately envisioned the documents I have saved over the past couple of years and thought about when my two favorite nieces had visited last year. Not only did they love visiting California in the winter from the mid-west, but they loved the fact we had two computers readily at their disposal (The office computer and a laptop in the living room).

Let me expound. These two beautiful girls have been raised by a loving and caring single mom who attempted to provide them with all the necessities in life. A stable home life, food, clothing, and a good education etc....

It hasn't always been easy for her, but for the most part anyone looking from the outside in would commend her on a job well done thus far. However, one of the things that she was unable to provide was a quality computer and internet service provider.

Well, when the girls visited last year, we were more than happy to allow them use of our computer while they were visiting. Shortly after their visit ended, we noticed a significant reduction in the speed of our computer and all of the attempts at remedying the situation failed. Ultimately, we were left no choice but to the purchase a new computer.

Now, back to my inquiring, curious friend. He's a major NFL fan and was watching the local news when he heard about a NFL player being arrested following a dispute between him and a reality show drama queen. In total disbelief and denial, my salivating co-worker immediately sprinted to his computer and typed related text into a popular search engine browser, eagerly awaiting the results.

Shortly thereafter, my friend noticed his computer was significantly slower and a few moments later it completely seized up like an oil depleted high performance race car!

Just this evening I opened my email account and was immediately drawn to an email from a major computer security company which stressed the importance of being cautious when major, newsworthy events take place.

It's only natural for a person to seek out more information concerning a major event that takes place. Just remember, people wanting to capitalize on the unknowing or unsuspecting realize this to be an opportunity to capitalize on.

Know that internet-based scammers will be out in force. They will be anticipating your actions in the hope you'll walk right into their web of strategically placed traps.

It is not my intent to scare you or say you shouldn't use the computer to search for things. It is merely an attempt to make you more aware and vigilant so that the dishonest are not able to take advantage of others.

Ultimately, in the end, costing you hundreds and hundreds of dollars to remedy the problem, or, more importantly someone stealing your identity from you.

As a precautionary measure, remember to always stick to major, well-known sites and avoid the lesser known more likely smaller sites where these less than moral types are able to germinate these viruses, adware, or spyware that can:

-Change or freeze your computer's functions
-Enable a hacker to "see" what you type via a keystroke program copier
-Control your computer remotely
-Enlist your computer in spamming or forwarding viruses to other computers
-Or, a host of other problems

Again, use caution! Malware can install from files on your computer automatically when you simply visit the wrong site(s). People in the computer security business call them "drive-by downloads" and the hackers don't even need files to do their dirty work.

In summary, I cannot stress this enough! Remember To Always:

-Stick to popular, well-known sites

-Always be skeptical of free offers

-Make certain all computer security systems are up-to-date and working properly

-Inform your teens and others who use the computer of the dangers and ramifications of using ill-advised sites for so called "free information" or getting "something for nothing."
