How to Conquer Fear: Is there a Biblical way to overcoming my fears?

No one is completely free of fear. As a Christian, I have learned three important things that I can do to find help. When times of fear come, I turn to God, and learn to trust! I hope the suggestions in this lens will be of help to you!  I admit that I have not always been successful, and as a pastor, I have found that everyone has phobias.  This is part of our living, and God has given us this ability for our survival.  However, you also have the ability to control the fear, rather than it controlling you!

The feelings of fear are very difficult to deal with, but it's important you know you're not alone in struggling to cope with these kinds of issues. Feelings of fear and self-doubt are especially difficult when they are a constant part of your life, and this provokes anxiety. All of us feel anxious some of the time, especially when stressful things are happening (for example at work or college), but we must develop strategies to cope, and even soar, during these times!

Biblical Facts:
Faith and trust will always trump fear!
The LORD says He is always with us!
Nothing we endure is more that we can endure!

(John 14:27) 27 Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(Psalms 37:1-2) 1 Don't fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb.

(Luke 12:4-5) 4 "I tell you, my friends, don't be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

(Matthew 11:28-30) 28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.""

(Psalms 27:1-3) 1 Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers came at me to eat up my flesh, even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

How To Conquer fear: Principle ONE: Trust God

Biblical Principles on how to overcome fear

trust God

Psa 34:4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. (NIV Translation)
As a Christian pastor I always begin with this. I am not a professional counselor, but I do know that we can draw much strength from a strong belief in God. Regardless of your religious background, taking your fear to the "Higher Power" does three things for you and your fears:
From ("Dealing With Fear" by Sharon Famonure.)

1.That there was One who is greater than my greatest fear

2.That I could get in touch with Him and He was willing to help me.

3. That I could literally give him my fears.

God Chooses Whom He Will The true story of a little girl forced to play softball with the big kids. She learned a valuable life lesson:You may be a very funny-looking little girl, no one seems to want you on their team, but you have a Big Brother who does; His name is Jesus. How to conquer fear: Principle two: Trust Yourself

Biblical principles on how to overcome fear

trust yourself

You may not feel you can do this at the moment. Try the following:

  1. Anything you can do which makes you feel good about yourself may help, from being around positive people to spending time on activities or interests you enjoy.
  2. Try not to be critical of yourself, concentrate your energy on doing things you like and thinking about what you have achieved.

Php 4:8 For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]. (Amplified Translation)

Foot In Mouth Disease
By Jerry Ousley - There is a real disease that is commonly called "Foot AND Mouth Disease." I am in no way making fun of that terrible disease but it occurred to me that there is another disease that doesn't really affect the physical body, instead affecting the recesses of the mind. I appropriately call it "Foot IN Mouth Disease."

Dealing With Fear
No matter how serene and unaffected a person may seem, there isn't anyone who is totally impervious to fear; everyone gets afraid sometimes. It is therefore not what you feel (fear) but what you do with what you feel.

How to conquer fear - Principle three: Talk To Your Friends

Biblical principles on how to overcome fear!

talk to friends

One of the big reasons for unmerited fear is a low self-esteem. This is where friends can really help. Most people find it helps to talk about their fears with close friends or family. If you feel able to share your feelings, they may be able to help you regain some confidence by reassuring you and reminding you of things you have done well. If you would like more advice and help to work out ways to handle these feelings you might want to consider talking things over with a counselor. Sometimes, people find it easier to talk to someone they don't know.
