Ranked #5,126 in Travel & Places, #147,803 overall
Need a vacation? You're not alone.
Our suggestion? Consider the California Cabin for your next vacation. Basic, simple, rustic, and totally lacking pretension, the log cabin really is adaptable to all your needs. And the best thing? The primitive aspect of the architecture means that the most authentic log cabins are not the most expensive ones.
History of the Cabin
And Why It's More Popular Than Ever
The log cabin might be the most straightforward structure in modern history. Basic, functional, and quick to construct, the log cabin is a symbol of simpler times in a complicated modern world. Its appeal is universal. Anywhere you find concrete-chocked cities within proximity to an unspoiled pastoral landscape, you will find individuals who are out in the woods, building their dream cabin out of locally sourced materials.
The log cabin has been an intrinsic part of American frontier history since before Abe Lincoln studied law by candelight in his old Kentucky home. But even before that, they were widely built in Switzerland, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. Immigrants brought their architecture with them to the nascent USA and continued building cabins, which were well-suited for the rough environments many found themselves in. They also had the advantage of being surrounded by the natural bounty of the United States, which meant they had lots of material to quickly construct a homestead. The architectural credo of function over form is deeply apparent in this most rustic of structures.
Though most of us don't live in log cabins anymore, that doesn't mean the log cabin has become less popular. To the contrary - the log cabin might be more popular in modern times than it ever was on the frontier. Why? Because in some ways it represents the best of American values: strength, simplicity, a connection with nature (Emerson, Thoreau, Laura Ingalls Wilder), a lack of pretension, and even a lack of a class system. The cabin is a symbol of neither the very rich nor the very poor - just of hard-working, commonsensical people doing the best they can with what's around them. It doesn't get more Green than that.
What He Said
My house makes me think of some mountain houses I have seen, which seemed to have fresher auroral atmosphere about them as, I fancy, of the halls of Olympus. - Henry David Thoreau on his Walden cabin
The Log Cabin in California
Go West Young Pioneers!
The log cabin was obviously a big hit in California, which is a state notable for its huge forests and rugged vistas. During the Gold Rush, log cabins sprouted up everywhere as miners from all over the world poured into California to make their fortunes.
There are still a few original log cabins from this time period around today and the more historical ones are looked after by the National Park Service and the Office of Historic Preservation. California cabins are still quite popular with tourists and history buffs.

Mark Twain's Cabin
Located in Gold Country, California (Or it was, once)

The author stayed here in the mid-19th century where he wrote "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", after the fireside story was told him by the bartender at his local saloon.

California Cabins For You
Where to Find Them
Now that you know a bit about the history of cabins, hopefully you are intrigued and will consider renting one for your next vacation. You really will be participating in a long history of "back to nature" style vacationing that's been refreshing souls since On Walden Pond - but with all the modern amenities that weren't on the frontier (i.e. running water, toilets, cooktops, coffee-makers).You should definitely always look for a cabin that suits the environment - there's a reason the style of the cabin hasn't changed much in the past 500 years. Any structure that's got a massive footprint and sticks out like a sore thumb is not a cabin. Cabins are by nature intimate, rural, and rustic. Once you plop it down in the middle of some semi-urban center or build it taller than the surrounding foliage, the structure loses some of the essential meaning. But the good news is, as we wrote above, the most authentic cabins (and therefore the most authentic experience) are not going to be the most expensive.
Authentic Log Cabin
In Sierra National Forest

Here's a great example of a log cabin in its element. Surrounded by foliage, made out of local materials, totally in-tune with everything around it. This is the perfect place for a family or a group of friends to hang out and have some fun after exploring the gorgeous Sierra National Forest. This cabin is available for rent at Far Meadow.
Get Back To Nature
Keep It Simple
Really, the best thing a log cabin can offer you is absolute respite from modern life. That is, in many respects, the log cabin's reason for being in the 21st century. As it is impractical structure for the urban environment, the log cabin is at it's best when surrounded by the beauty of trees, streams, meadows, and mountains.Try and look for log cabins that have a bit of the old style to them - not overly large, complicated, or high class. The log cabin was never meant to be fancy, just practical and cozy. After all, you're not meant to be spending your time indoors. The log cabin should be the place you nest after a long day of hiking, kayaking, rock-climbing, swimming, or even just daydreaming like Thoreau at Walden Pond.
So consider the California cabin. It's got a lot to offer.
