The Magnificant & Oft Maligned Raven

Luke 12:24

24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

This lens is a work in progress, stay tuned!

In the Beginning, God created Birds

Genesis 1:19-21

19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. 20 Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens." 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

The First Bird Mentioned by Name in Scripture

The Raven holds the high honor of being the first bird mentioned by name in scripture and is an integral part of the story of Noah and the Ark. Although, the dove is more famous for it's final return with the olive branch to indicate the waters had completely subsided, it was a Raven that Noah first send out on the important mission.

Genesis 8:6-8

6 So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. 7 Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth. 8 He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground.

An Unclean Bird

Leviticus 11:13-15

13 'And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, 14 the kite, and the falcon after its kind; 15 every raven after its kind,...

Because they are carrion eaters, Ravens fell into the Biblical category of birds which were never to be eaten, even touching their carcasses was considered an abomination, most likely due to them being potential carriers of disease and pestilence.

The lucky Raven never had to worry about appearing on the Jew's dinner menu or being used as part of their sacrifices.

The Raven as Biblical Rescuer

Once again Raven's were given a high honor and task in their assignment to feed and sustain the prophet Elijah during a time of drought and famine.

1 Kings 17:3-6

3 "Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 4 And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." 5 So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

God's Admonation of Job includes mention of the Raven

Among God's reminder of His Omnipotence in response to Job, God speaks of His provision for the Raven...

Job 38:41 Who provides food for the raven, When its young ones cry to God, And wander about for lack of food?

The Psalmist also reminds us in

Psalm 147:8 Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains. 9 He gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens that cry.

An Attribute of Beauty

The Shulamite uses the color of a raven to as part of the poetic beauty in her physical description of her beloved in the Song of Solomon.

Song of Solomon 5:10-12

10 My beloved is white and ruddy, Chief among ten thousand. 11 His head is like the finest gold; His locks are wavy, And black as a raven. 12 His eyes are like doves By the rivers of waters, Washed with milk, And fitly set.

Jesus Speaks of the Raven in His Example of God's Provision

One of my favorite Biblical passages makes mention of the Raven

Luke 12:23-25

23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
