Construction Paper Ornaments

Create Your Own Christmas Ornaments

A few years back, the Christmas spirit just wasn't there for me, but all that changed when we created our own construction paper ornaments for that year's Christmas tree. Here's what we did, the types of materials we used, and how you can also have fun making construction paper ornaments.

For The Children

When you celebrate the holidays for the children despite how you might feel inside, by getting past that to help make their light shine, you bring some comforting light to your own soul as well.

This is my story about this lesson learned.

Construction Paper

It was during a period of grief. I had no energy, and was probably severely depressed. All that I could muster up was the will to get the tree standing. I just didn't have the energy to go through the memories stashed away in those bright boxes of ornaments up in the attic.

But, with some gentle nudging from my husband, I agreed that I could oversee my grandson and his cousins taking part in dressing up the tree with homemade ornaments. I didn't, after all, want to disappoint the children. Thankfully, we already had the supplies we needed to get started or it would have been another hurdle in the effort to make the children's time a happy time.

Glitter Pens

Setting up the supply table, giving the children ideas, cutting shapes they couldn't cut... Well, soon I was in on the fun as well. It's quite easy to let the children's spirit become a part of your own if you just let go. ...I began drawing, coloring, and glittering ornaments of my own while I helped them with theirs. In short, we soon had a tree full of homemade Christmas ornaments made from construction paper.

Crayons

And that's not all. Throughout the season, we had every person that came in our door to sit down at the supply table and make an ornament for the tree before they left for home. Young or old, it was a pleasure for them to do. They even took their time searching the tree until they had found that "special place" to hang their ornament.

Safety Scissors

Everyone that came to our house that year remarked on the tree. It got more remarks than any tree that I had ever put up with store-bought stuff. For me, the tree evoked a spirit of goodness every time I looked at it. I think it was that way for others, too.

Ornament Hooks

The tree, the season, it all turned out to help brighten the weeks that followed, and it is now a tradition that still evokes that "good spirit." I adore watching my grandson, now ten, making ornaments. He and a cousin are looking forward to making some construction paper ornaments with us in the next days, and that makes my husband and me very happy.

Making Construction Paper Ornaments

Tips

• Let imagination and creativity flow.

• Gather other tools, for adults, such as precision scissors and an X-acto stencil knife for more creativity.

• Cut out shapes, such as circles, squares, bells, snowmen, and etc. The children will probably recognize that you do the cutting and shapes better and will probably ask you to cut so they can draw and color and place their glitter glue.

• Use the knife to cut out designs and shapes within the ornament; outline them with glitter glue.

• Do share your tree trimming with guests. They really will enjoy it.

• Have hot apple cider, hot chocolate and lots of snacks. It's party time!

• Start each holiday season anew. After the holidays, instead of keeping everything to use on next year's tree, take pictures of the tree before you dismantle it, remove the hangers or hooks from the ornaments, and keep those construction paper ornaments that are extra special to you. Place your chosen ornaments and your pictures in a special holiday photo album. You might even take closeups of each ornament and keep the whole catalog on CD.

• If you want to give the regular ornament hooks, like I recommended earlier, a nicer appearance, take two needle-nose pliers and place one on each end of the hook. Straighten it out, then start curling your wire back up into a curly, stylized "S" shape. They look better, don't they? ...Here are some curly hooks that you can buy already made.

• Adding the ornament hanger without making a hole first will bend or crease the construction paper ornament as you try to force the hook through the paper. Have a section of newspaper folded on the supply table. Place the ornament flat on the newspaper and use a stick pen to go through the ornament to make your hanger hole. Or use the Fiskars 1/16-Inch hand punch, which makes a smaller circle than the usual office hole punch.

• Cut strips of construction paper and make a chain to wrap around the tree. We also sometimes string popcorn and add that to the tree as garland.

Favorite holiday traditions?

Making construction paper ornaments has become quite the tradition in our home these past years, and I hope it continues with my grandson's own family. How about your own family traditions?

My daughter has 3 children under 8 years of age (the youngest are rowdy boys!) and she has given up decorating her home with glass ornaments. Instead she lets them make the decorations. I know she would just love the ideas you have shared. I adore (on bended knee) creating Christmas memories. Blessed. Do have a joyous Christmas.

Thank you, my daughter has a 200 page notepad of colored construction paper . . now we'll get started. (I only ever made those 'chain-linked' thingies).
