What is a Container Garden?

Container Gardening can be the solution to a range of gardening challenges: poor or toxic soil, wrong-shaped gardens, too little planting space, too much concrete and brick, too little time or restricted mobility. There is a bewildering range of containers around today; varying in style and shape, some offer the advantage of height, so you can stack your plants in terraces and or grow them in cascades.

It is easy to see the appeal of container gardening; plants in containers are relatively quick to mature, annuals can be replaced with each season, pots can be moved from one location to another - or changed entirely. A new garden can spring up over a weekend!

With container gardening, there's no heavy digging - perfect for those with limited strength and stamina. Soil needs to be improved and feeding the plants is recommended of course. The main problem is the need to keep watering, especially in warmer months, although if you have a hosepipe, this is not so difficult.

Choosing Containers for Your Garden

Where to start?

First decide on the style of your garden, the plants you want to display and the conditions they will enjoy. Will you be growing vegetables, herbs or flowering plants? Do you need to stack plants for more space? If so, will the weight be a problem? If growing herbs, are they near the kitchen for ease of harvesting? Can you easily water all the containers? Is there enough sunlight to the area or is it too shady? Ensure the containers are just a little too big for the intended plants to allow room for plant growth.

Getting the Best from Containers

Keeping your container plants happy

Choose the right soil for the plants you intend to grow, ensure there is sufficient drainage so plants don't become waterlogged. Feed your plants with the appropriate plant food, and ensure you water regularly, especially in the summer months, preferably in the morning before it is too hot, or in the evening when the sun is low. This ensures less water is lost through evaporation.

Container Herb Gardening

Here are a few pointers when growing herbs in containers:

  • Choose containers which are larger than the herbs you intend to grow. Give your herbs a chance to grow!
  • Harvest your herbs regularly to keep them producing fresh shoots.
  • Don't grow what you don't use - grow to cook. Grow them where you can get to them - right near the house.
  • Herbs need sunlight to grow - they dislike too much shade.
  • If you plan to grow herbs on a patio plant as you would a central bed - tall plants in the middle, shorter ones to the edges.

I'm on a quest to grow my own where ever I am, right now in a village. I'm used to huge ground gardens, lots of work there, and am now going to container gardens. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the ideas, lovely lens!

If a person knows how to have farm animals on a small piece of property you could have a miniature farm in the city. Love you container ideas.

In recent years I prefer to grow all of my plants in large planters - they do so much better than planted in the ground here in central Florida and its sand. Great lens! :)
