You need to use your imagination and select plants according to the climatic conditions in case you want to add glory to your container garden. Although you can have a long lasting garden in temperate or tropical climate areas, yet you may feel like changing the plants from time to time.The size of the pot and the speed of growth of the plant must be kept in mind while selecting suitable plants for container garden. It should be checked that the plant selected for urn gardening is not very fast growing as it may outgrow the size of the pot and may make the garden look clumsy.
The height and width of the plant in a pot garden must be compatible with that of the pot. The height should not be more than two times the height of the pot and the width not more than 1.5 times the width of the pot. If you do not have exposure to enough sunlight, then you should not select the flora which needs ample sunlight for its proper growth, or else they may die soon.

The best container plants which can help you start off with your ideal container patch and are suited to the requirements of a pot garden are:If you are making your garden in spring, you can go for shrubs which flowers early, such as Lilac and Azalea, and blooming plants like Primroses, Ferns and Pansies, cool vegetable plants namely greens and Lettuce. In summers, you can opt for warm season vegetable plants like squash, tomato and edible flowers, Herbs, ornamental glasses and miniature roses.

The nature of growth of the bottle plants also plays an important role in their selection for indoor gardening or container gardening. For making your garden bloom and look green all around you can opt for Ivy, Moss, Fillers such as Creeping Jenny, Sweet Potato Vines, Artemisia, Spider Plants etc. On the other hand Fountain grass, Angels Trumpet, Elephant ear and Salvia plant are utilized for adding height to the container garden.
