Naturally, Rudy was very concerned with contaminated dog food. Like many of us dog owners, I used to buy heaps of commercial dog food and pile it into Rudy's plate. Rudy was eating it, no questions asked, as he was relaying on me to take care of him and give him the best (isn't that what's family is all about?).
So, when the whole dog food recall thing exploded in the media, Rudy raised his eyes to me, asking: "is this dog food really good for me, or are you feeding me food that will make me ill and shorten my life?". So, being the great mom that I am, I went out to get some answers, and boy did my research shock me....

Diving further into the world of commercial dog food paints a better picture as to why contaminated dog food reaches out shops, homes and dog's stomachs. After reading through quite a few articles on and off line, it became clear to me that I will never again give Rudy any commercial dog food. Here's what I found out about it:

Commercial dog food in made out of dead zoo animals and road kills. At first I thought it was a joke or an urban legend. But it's all true. And - it's perfectly legal to integrate dead zoo animals and road kills into dog food.

Euthanized cats and dogs. I made a cannibal out of Rudy (sorry I didn't mean to). But there you have it. Dogs and cats that were put down by vets are sent to factories and processed into dog food. This is shocking as well as disgusting, but it was reported that the city of Los Angeles sends about 200 tons of euthanized cats and dog to a rendering plant, every month. These cats and dog's bodes contains a chemical called Sodium Pentobarbital - This chemical is used to euthanize cats, dogs, and zoo animals. It survives cooking and can reach your dog's food

The use of chemicals and preservatives in dog food. Some dog food brands say that they do no include chemicals and preservatives, but you must understand that companies are not legally obligated to list preservatives and chemicals they did not add themselves. So, they use ingredients they bought form someone else, and these ingredients do include chemicals and preservatives. Many of these ingredients are imported from China and other countries, that have different standards.

After finding out all these horrifying facts about the dog food industry, is it a big mystery why contaminated dog food reached Rudy's plate?

After completing my little research, as well as reading all the dog food recall bad news, Rudy and me had a serious talk..we decided we're NOT going to buy any commercial dog food ever again. Instead, I'm going to learn how to make my own dog food, right here at our home.

If you think about it, the obesity plague in North America exists partly because people stopped making home made food and are going for the fast food/snacks solution. Same in dog food - we prefer a commercial, fast solution to a healthy one. It may save some time now, but will cost dearly later.

When I started to make homemade dog food, I quickly found that it does NOT have to be hard, time consuming or expensive. Now I am so relaxed because I know that Rudy is well-fed with safe and healthy food that will add years to his life.
