Contemporary Aboriginal Art

Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art ensures the traditons and stories of the Aboriginal people are passed on to future generations. New mediums have been adopted by modern artists but the traditional symbols used and the stories told by contemporary Aboriginal Artists helps to preserve the worlds oldest living culture.

Aboriginal Tradition Lives On

Painting of Aboriginal Artwork, Northern Territory, Australia

Aboriginal artists today use many different mediums to tell the stories of their ancestors, their dreamtime stories. They also paint stories from their own life and experiences, this is their own dreaming.

The use of medern materials such as acrylic paints and canvas ensure that the works are a more permanent record of aboriginal traditions and culture.

The new generation of Urban Aboriginal Artists live in those areas of the country where the initial impact of colonisation was most strongly felt. Many of them are self taught, though some have taken part in formal training at art schools. Their work look to Aboriginal sources for inspiration and is influenced by Western, and occasionally other art traditions.

Some great videos featuring Aboriginal art, music and history.

Your Thoughts on Aboriginal Art

Excellent Steven, we don't hear enough about indigenous art. When I was growing up we only knew of the western landcapes (beautiful though they are) of Namatjira. and the occasional so-called "primitive" dot paintings. (How ignorant we were) It's a great pleasure to see a lens of this quality featuring contemporary art based on Koorie traditions.
