Contemporary wedding photographs capture the mood, the atmosphere and the emotion from your day, together with photographs that you will treasure for a lifetime.

So what is contemporary wedding photography?

Not so many years ago the only main type of photography available for wedding couples was traditional. You could almost imagine your wedding pictures before you had been married. The usual poses, well done, but nonetheless very formal. We all know what this means.

Contemporary means exactly that - it is more in keeping with modern day trends, which in this case is for a more relaxed, natural and stylish type of photographs.

Contemporary wedding photography is about capturing moments and personalities, rather than just poses. The photographs should convey a sense of the day, the emotion and the personalities of those involved. The pictures should tell the story, and importantly they should bring back many memories for the couple and their families.

Contemporary does not mean snaps...

So that's fine - we understand the principles, but what exactly does this all mean in practice?

It will probably help if we define what this is not. It is certainly not just a lack of formal and traditional pictures. Couples often say that the pictures taken by their guests can be much more meaningful to them than their formal photographs. So the logical assumption is that any shot will do, so long as it is not posed - and we can call that 'contemporary'. Anyone who has tried this knows there is a world of difference between a snap and a well composed natural photograph. So we are definitely not talking about snaps.

This is an important point - a very important point. The advent of digital imaging and greater use of the internet means that it has never been easier for people to set themselves up as 'wedding photographers'. That is fine - but there is a real skill involved in contemporary wedding photography, and this is much more than snapping away with the latest canon or nikon digital camera.

So what are the basics to contemporary wedding photography?

So we know what contemporary photography is not. But then what is it? I am going to focus on a few key areas:-

Composition. This is critical and sets apart a snap from a beautiful picture. Just think of any picture that you might buy for your wall. One of the strongest elements will be composition - that is how the picture is composed. Often a simple approach is best, as a picture that is too complex is cluttered. Good composition is about understanding how different parts of a picture will look to the eye, conveying a message, telling a story - or simply making a good picture.

Equipment. You are not in control of the subject or the surrounding with contemporary wedding photography, instead you are trying to react to them and capture them with little involvement. That means your camera equipment and lenses are even more important. You need the ability to get the right shot from the opportunity, and that means expense. One of the most important aspects, as well as a good camera, is professional lenses. These cost a large amount and are heavy to carry, but they make the difference.

Understanding light. The type of light is a crucial element to any photograph, it can transform an ordinary picture to one of real beauty. This is about understanding how the camera will respond to the light and what extent of artificial light (flash) will be helpful.

Good with people. This part can't be stressed enough. Contemporary photography is about capturing people in a natural and relaxed manner, and that is as much about people skills as it is about technical skills. Different people react differently to a camera and the real skill comes in adapting your shooting style to get the best from the subject, as well as being personable and getting the best from people.
